Hey everyone...

So the store that I and all our friends play at is having a new Fantasy Warbands league... and I was thinking of starting Wood Elves.

I heard they're really good because of all the ranged stuff, and I really like the models. In particular the dryads. Are they good?

I don't know much about Fantasy; I know it plays a bit different than 40k but I don't know what Core units are and stuff.

Any help?

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Not real sure what you are looking for. Specific questions would really help a lot.

Regarding the dryads, they are one of the best core units in the entire game; taking into consideration the point cost, stats, and game play.

What is a youth? Impetuous fire.
What is a maid? Ice and desire.

Hah yeah sorry about the confusion. I guess I was wondering mostly about the Dryads. I really love the models for them and I was hoping they were a good choice to choose. And I guess to clarify: are the Wood Elves a good first-time army to someone who has never played before? (kinda like how I always hear that Space Marines are a good first-time army for 40k)

I have heard two things about wood elves and first-timers to fantasy:

1. A lot of veteran fantasy players use wood elves, because of all the movement / tactics

2. The army is more similar to 40k than most, since it involves a lot of skirmishers (who can see/move 360 degrees just like in 40k)

I'm thinking it would work well for you, especially using a lot of dryads, since they are skirmishers. You would have to get away from any mentality of just going forward and charging the enemy with them, though- with wood elves I hear the main thing is to flank and charge a single unit with multiple units.

So, that's my $0.02 . I am about to get a wood elves army, too, so I'll know more soon!

Alright... that sounds good to me haha.

Anyway... so do you need to be a pro to play Wood Elves then? or ... whats a good commander/HQ to go with dryads?

Wood Elves, well elves in general, are not a very forgiving army for in-game tactical mistakes that new players are often prone to. I lost about two years straight before I won my first game and wood elves were my first army.

With that being said though, if you like the models and they inspire you to play then by all means start a wood elf army. They are fun to play and a full 2K army of woodies look great on the battlefield.

As far as tactics go for them, wood elves are very dependant on during the movement phase. They are an army that can dictate when combat takes place. Learning tactics to set up dual charges and bait and flee techniques for a flank or rear charge are the bread and butter of wood elf combat. Dyrads and wardancers are the two best units to execute those tactics.

Slightly OT- Where did you hear they might be getting a release this year, Luna? And what do you mean by "release"?

That would be awesome

If im not mistaken , they are usually release around after Beastmen or Tomb King ,
its a cycle thing , unless its Dark Eldar , than i dunno T-T

release usually means new codex + some new models.

There has been nothing, whatsoever, to suggest a Wood Elves release other than a hinting that "Something with pointy ears and another thing with fur" might be in the upcoming starter set for the next edition of WHFB.

Which really doesn't tell you anything, since it could mean High, Dark, or Wood Elves versus Skaven or Beasts of Chaos.

I personally hope wood elves do NOT end up in the starter set... then everyone would be playing them... I like to feel unique

Well, I won my first game with Wood Elves

So I think it is fairly friendly to those switching over from 40k (I have previously tried games with lizardmen and high elves, and I found the wood elves easier to grasp as far as movement and tactics go).

Cheers!
