I know I read the other threads but I still have questions

How many rulebooks are required to start the game today? I would like to try Cryx I assume I would need some type of army book and some card deck? Can you guys give me some army list themes that I might try to start building around.

Can you provide a 40k analogue with regards to play style for each warmachine army

Thanks

I don't play 40k, so I can't help with that. But what you need to play is Prime Mk2, which is the core rule book and a faction deck for the faction that you want to play; These decks contain stat cards for every model in a faction. Stat cards have all the specific rules for a given model on them, so basically all you need is the card to know what a model does.

As for lists, I would highly suggest getting the battle box for the faction you like and play some battle box games to get a hang of the system. Then add up to 15 pts. and play a little more, and then expand Warmachine is a game that finds its complexity in combos between different abilities on different models in your list, so going straight for it with a huge army right off the bat will probably leave you horribly confused (at least experience shows that's what happens).

I hope someone will be along with a sort of comparison to 40k. I haven't played 40k for 10 years, and I assume a lot of things have changed since then

There's a rulebook coming out with all the Cryx stuff in May.

The Battle College website is a good resource.

-edit- In my opinion:

Cryx:
Heavy spellcasting.
Fast moving, many units terrain ignoring.
Have no medium infantry, either fodder or elites
Have no heavy cavalry
Warjacks have less armor and HP of all factions.

Khador:
Army as a whole has higher armor.
Have no true fodder infantry.
Many elite solos.
Has deceptively little shooting power - most units with shooting attacks are short ranged.
Warjacks have most armor and HP of all factions.
Khador has no light jacks or arc nodes.

Menoth:
Army as a whole is comprised of sub-par units (outside of the armored knight type units.
Many elite solos.
Units often buff one-another.
Has few shooting units (though the MKII deliverers are loads better than MK1)
Warjacks are generally slow and have lacklustre stats without buffs, but have most buffs available of all factions.

Cygnar:
Loads of shooting units.
Has no fodder infantry - this army has lots of elite infantry.
Warjacks are arguably the best without any buffs, with medium armor and speed.

Is that from the battle college?

I still believe in Menoth's synergy less and more in its sacrifice/attrition gameplay. Models
die so that other models can become awesome.

@Malf: It's more of my own opinion. The dying part seems secondary IMHO, since in MK2, ganking your own guys usually no longer gives them the bonus.

True, but what can protectorate do to buff itself outside of Choir, Covenant and Vassals? The
vaunted protectorate "synergy" is built upon the bodies of the faithful for the Monolith Bearer,
Exemplar (all flavors thus far) and Reclaimers.

But then maybe I'm overstating my case.

One. Warmachine Prime Mk2.

I would like to try Cryx I assume I would need some type of army book and some card deck?

Yep, the faction deck comes out tomorrow/later today (depending on your time zone). You'll want the new Cryx deck. Stupidly enough, there's actually a bunch of mk1 faction decks that were labelled mk2. These were the rerelease of mk1 cards with new art and whatnot. Don't buy one of these by mistake.

Can you guys give me some army list themes that I might try to start building around.

They'll be pretty meaningless until you have a few games under your belt.

We can give you generalizations about each army, but enough stuff has been released that you can build a an army focused on a given approach out of most factions.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
