Hey guys I'm new to warmachine (Mk II is in the mail, literally) and as I've been cruising various forum's new members areas. I've noticed alot of new players (especially ones that are migrating from GW). Now I know that alot of it is because of the new rules but being that its the best selling Warmachines book in PP's history I wanted to hear your ideas at to why so many people are joining up (I have my own ideas of course but I would like to hear yours or if you are joining up I'd like to hear why.

I think the edition switch attracted players, and the announcement of the army
books this year was a bonus, and finally I think the plastic 'jacks got the fence sitters.

Not to mention a general buzz about the game being more balanced and friendly towards new players.
Warmachine and Hordes got pretty bloated with all the add-on rules across multiple books. So many different versions of the same rules floating around.
Also, there was a power creep, and even the methods PP tried to curtail that power creep that hurt new players. So the starter battle box armies that new players often got weren't fun to play with.

Here's the problem with the starter boxes:
Experienced players know how to win with them. (Unlike me, who only knows how I'm going
to lose at any given moment). So new players playing veterans is unfair without some
coaching or "blundering" on the veteran's part. If veterans mix up a starter battle with
a different grouping of models, the new player is at an even bigger disadvantage due to
lack of knowledge.
Anyway, that's what I think happens with battle box games.

It's true experienced players tend to win, I mean that's just natural.
However, with the way Mk1 was, it was frustrating in the way you'd lose early on, to things that you had no idea existed because it wasn't in your book, or it was some horrorific Mk1 unit with 10 special rules on the back of its card that combined with 1-3 other units with just as many special rules.
A new player in Mk1 quickly got the idea that this game had progressed far beyond him getting further in to it. Only a good social gaming group and store could retain such a player past that point and into the game at large, and sadly those are few and far between as a lot of groups tend to be cliquish.
Enter Mk2, where most units have 1-2 special rules not found in the main rulebook, and often those rules are shared with other units if not unique.

I think it's mainly because it allows a fresh new entry into the game

Mk I's problem wasn't so much power creep, as Prime models were not made obsolete. It was rules glut.
Too many times people didn't lose because a model/unit was too powerful, it was because of forgetting your own model's rules or not even knowing your opponent's model's rules.
Oh yeah, and vets shouldn't be beating up on noobs, they should be coaching to build the player base and help others to enjoy this great game.

I think it may be the combo of events.
Lots of people got to see the free PDF rules during FieldTest and after.
Plastic Jacks are attracting people who seem to think they are injection molded polystyrene.
A MkII represents a clean slate for those who passed due to the massive errata that WM/H had built up.
Force books are a familiar medium to GW players.
All these added with a lack in tournaments for GW games represents a huge opportunity for Privateer to pick up new players.
Especially former 40k/FB players.
Personally, I have been playing 40k this month, as I wait for the MkII cards and am now picking up my 40k projects again.
I fully expect to switch back to Warmachine as the Force books start coming out.

I meant no "Official" tournament circuit.
At least that is what I remember being on the board early in last year.

True, but they provide lots of support through the local scenes since they're a big
enough company to afford that sort of thing.

I've been getting back into warmachine myself so I thought I'd post my thoughts on why I did.
* I really liked warmachine but the meta game (infantrymachine) had really turned me off. Even though I played menoth the game to me was supposed to be about warjacks.
* GW is doing a terrible job of keeping their games updated. They are updating codexs that don't really need fixing while ignoring tons of codexs that could benefit much more from updating.
* GW games have priced themselves out of my market. A shiny new warhammer army will set you back a minimum of $400 bucks and more likely closer to $500 bucks. For that much money I can buy an army for Flames of War, Warmachine and Arcane Legions and still probably have enough left over to buy a cool new boardgame.
* GW pays little to no attention to how their codexs are balanced for tournament play. They'll even tell you as much.
* I really like the fact that since it's a skirmish game it's a hell of a lot easier to get all your models painted. You might have 30 models in an army.
* I really like Privateers attitude towards it's game. I know that's kind of a vague statement but I really feel they understand their own game. They know how it's being played and they know whether that fits with how they want their game to be played. I feel GW completely lacks awareness in this department.

I'm new player WM. I just ordered yesterday.
And I'm 40K player for 3month.
I still love 40k.
They are having good miniature,gaming.
Some say "GW sucks, because they pay no attention to us!!!!!!!!WTF!!!! NO new XXXXX CODEX,SUCKS!!!!!"
I'm new player so parhaps I dont realize how bad GW is. But I think they are just whiner I can find every kind of forum. They get their identity from insulting something big, everyone loves.
title is asking why I start play so....
I start because simply PP miniature is good looking. And game are fun.
Of course 40K is fun too.
but WM have different style to play.
In japan, there is only little number of player.
Even 40k,very little number but WM is more little.
I hope more new player come.

I am also new to WM but have been playing 40K for over two years now. I mainly am getting into it because we have a large community here that is the same size as our 40K group. So I want to play in both.
I also am thrilled with the way the game plays as compared to 40K... my armies in 40K play/react the same way every game in a sort of rock/paper/scissors way. But in warmachine there are crazy schemes that I can come up with mid-game that are widly entertaining.
