Since Marines see the Big E as a great man but not a god
would the marines try and convert the populace of there home/chapter worlds to this belief or leave them as is
(especially with chaplins running around)

Then it would cut itself.

In the end, SoB are uppity female canines who enjoy their faith in the emperor so much, I'd say they themselves are no longer truly human. They've given up normal life in exchange to become bolter-bitches.

It depends on the Chapter, really.

If it was a planet that was only recently brought back into the Imperium, a reasonable chapter would spread the word of the God Emperor of Mankind. If it was a planet that rebelled, a purge is more likely. Although, such things aren't exactly the role of the Astares. After they accomplished their mission, they would call in missionaries from the Ecclesiarchy to do the converting.

I think it would be more the populous asking who these strange warriors are, and being told that they are descended from the sons of the Immortal Emperor. Then leaving the fine detail up to the priests. Although given a warrior culture, such priming would work well and possibly better than a funny guy in a robe.

An initiate gets indoctrinated with the teachings of the chapter's cult during his training. Imperial citizens are supposed to follow the beliefs of the Ecclesiarchy.

Space Marines are only above such things because, well, they're Space Marines. It takes a little more to declare the Excommunicae.

Wait wait wait wait... Who says they believe he's a great man? He's a GOD in the 41st Millenium to everyone who worships him, be it in the church or in murder on the battlefield.

When Space Wolves go to war, they say for Russ and the Allfather, a tagline similiar to calling him the creator.

Even among Space Marine chapters, he's known as the God-Emperor. Not the Man-Emperor, GOD Emperor. The only true 'Loyalist' chapter that I would say knows he isn't a God is the Soul Drinkers. Though I'm not handing out spoilers.

That aside, think for a bit. The Emperor is a dead husk like a Dreadnought but can't even animate one. HOWEVER, his whole mind is focuses on keeping up the Astronomican, and therefore he can be witnessed, in a way. So to the people, whether Marine or not, see something causing this and they're told he's a God, they believe it.

So to explain simply, they agree with the "norms".

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

I cant remmember where I read it (not just from the soul Drinkers books) but most chapters excluding the black templers see him as yes the all father etc but not as a god

other wise they wouldn't be seen as outsiders to the elichsary (sorry for the poor spelling on that one)

1)To a space marine, the Emperor IS the 'allfather': After all, at the end of it, the Primarchs are the 'children' of the Emperor created from his egentic material- and from the basis of that genetic material, the gene-seeds for space marine chapters were created. So in that sense, even if its seperated by a generation or so, the gene seed system ultimatly calls the Emperor 'papa'

2)I figure Space marine Chapter worlds are actually mostly feral, and dont espose any Imperial Religion worshipping the Emperor, and in fact are more then happy to let the populace worship them as Gods (Red Scorpions, for example.) In the more civilized realms, its probably the Space Marine cult all dumbed down for the populace. I cant see any planet in the realm of Ultramar following the standard Imperial Religion, just because everyone already dogmaticly supports the Ultramarines, and given that for 10,000 years the culture of these worlds have been based around that, the belief system of the Ultramrines themselves is liklly to have trickled down.

thats what I was thinking would happen

and It would sort of be the same for chapters such as the soul drinkers for example who though are considered to be renegades but in truth see through the lies of the imperium and do start preaching there creed to joe blogs on there space hulk and im guessing they'll do the same to the people they saved in the final book (if and when its written) if of course they stay as one big group (and aren't purged by the imperial fists and the adeptus mechanicus)

Read the HORUS HERACY saga. Theres plenty of all that "why not just leave them alone" stuff through the whole thing. Basicly, its the view that religion of a people only holds them back and gives undue weight to things (spirits, demons, ghosts, angles, etc) that are not there and people (the imperium) have no contrrol over.

I disagree with your idea of SM worshipping a "god-emperor" since codices and index astartes articles are pretty clear on this.

So how about index astartes II / page 56 / chaplains? Should explain the believes of SM.

I think the space marines do venerate him as their creator and father(grandfather?) but not as a god as it was only the word bearers I think who worshipped him.

"You call yourselves true warriors, with your palaces and fountains, your medals and parades? I grasped my first axe when I was still in my birth-caul. I earned my first wolfskin when I was still a whelp. I've been fighting every single day of my life, son. Perhaps you're today's challenge, Eh?

I always thought they did revere him as a god (Hence the term, God-Emperor). According to the Horus Heresy novels (One of the three in the intro trilogy - I think it was False Gods or Galaxy in Flames) the Emperor, in his time, didn't want people to think he was a god. In fact, it was considered heretical to do so, and those who did worship him would sometimes be shunned by other members of his Legion. Now, however, they refer to him as the god-Emperor, and there's a whole religion (The Eccliesiarchy) based around the idea that he is a god.

As to the original question, I believe some chapters do try and convert the populace - I know Space Wolves sort of do. According to the novel Space Wolf, part of the process of transforming into a Wolf is having your mind filled with all the information of the Imperium and its enemies, as well as messages to give worship and praise to the Emperor and Leman Russ.

During the Great Crusade, the Emperor Appointed Iterators to spread the (secular) Imperial Truth. The Imperial Truth began to crumble as the horrors of the warp were revealed, and the Lectitio Divinitatus (which postulated the Emperor was a divine being) began to spread. At some point after the Emperor was interred in the Golden Throne, worshippers emerged from all across the Imperium, unifying the people until it became the official religion of the Imperium.
