hey Dakka...
this is my entry for the Bolter and Chainsword painting comp. next month...
the first of 3 entries, this is for the single mini category...
for those who'd care to vote:
http://coolminiornot.com/241539
it's my first attempt at the glowing lenses on the helmet, and my first go at a more realistic flame...
i don't really think that i pulled it off as well as Cyril, but i'll keep tryin'...
same goes for the flames...
i didn't want to do a straight Bobinator rip-off (check out his LOTD on CMON), but i don't think i quite captured the look of the realistic hot-rod flames on the cars these days...
i'll have to have a go again on some of the LOTD minis...
loads of freehand work on this guy including the chapter symbol, battle damage, and flames...
i had fun playin' with the battle damage again...
i'm happy with the sallie symbol, considering how small they are...
any C&C before the contest is appreciated...
i will have to take some shots for the contest without the plinth anyway...
i think i will have to redo the gem on the front of the hammer, as it's upside down...
i thought that the hammer would be a little more flat, like a baseball swing, but it's pretty well upright when glued on...
oh well, just one more little thing to fix...
pics really do help when it comes to lookin' for flaws in a paintjob...
thanks for lookin'...
cheers

yeah, yer right, you didn't get anything right on that model, it pretty much sucks. I wouldn't even bother putting it in the competition, really you should just give it away, and cuz we are such homies I will totally take it off of your hands dispite it being a huge burden. If it makes you feel any better I will let you buy me something nice for my Birthday in May to make up for the effort I have to put into taking that chud-ugly mini off of your hands.
HA HA!!! Anyway, it is freakin fantastic! Don't be so self-depricating over it. I have been painting since the days of Reaganomics and won several painting competitions and there is no way anything I have done compares. Yeah, the jem was painted upside down but if his eye bits glow than that is the excuse for the shine being upside down. The light sourceing looks great. Though my suggestion would be to paint some light spill-over onto the edge of the Chapter shoulderpad and maybe the handle of the Thunder Hammer. Good show dude, I am sure you are gunna ace the comp!
And if you get a chance to make it into Ancient Wonders there in Tualatin punch Ryan for me. He might give you a discount for it!

That looks incredible. Really stunning work. I can't imagine that model not at least making the podium. Good luck mate, and you have my vote. Edit: Oh, and the helmet lens glow looks SWEET! The flames also look great, but just as a suggestion, you could check out realistic flames for hot rod paint jobs.

First, let me say that this is an amazing paintjob. Truly great work, I'm sure it'll do well in the contest.
Now, one of my thoughts that wasn't drowned out by "that's awesome!" is that the fire seems a bit lonely. I think you did a great job on it, but it's just there on a single foot. I'd think about putting more somewhere else on the armor, say one of his hands.
Of course, that's just me. Others may entirely disagree with me. As I said, even if you do nothing to it, it looks amazing. You should be proud.

thanks guys...
@machineslave: Alaska represent!!!
believe me, i'm not slaggin' my painting, just bein' critical, as there are a few REALLY good painters who are regulars on the B&C...
the eye lens glow is not meant to be so strong as to illuminate the shoulders or hammer haft...
the gem will have to be fixed...
@sgtsixkilla: i did check out the realistic flame jobs on hot rods, but as i continued to define the shape of the flames, the yellow ended up dominating...
i really like the work of the guy who used to come on Chip Foose's show, Overhaulin'...
i can't remember the guy's name, but i found a few online sources for the same style of flame...
i will definitely have to refine the idea a bit more...
@sarrazon: the flame is an honour marking, and as such should stand out...
the next one will be on the hand, climbin' the forearm...
it'll probably still look lonely, but when i get around to doin' some LOTD there will be more flames...
thanks again...
cheers

I feel that the big bronze skull is a bit off. it looks like it has two light sources on it. One coming from the top right and the other from behind and to the left (also above.) Other then what others have pointed out it looks great. Good job on this so far.

The first thing that captured my eyes were his eyes. That is some fantastic glow effect highlighting man.
All the freehand is amazing as well, I'd have thought they were decal transfers. Just great work all around.

thanks guys...
@Kinghammer: the flames were painted from dark to light, in layers...
the first layer was P3 Sanguine Base, sketching out the shape of the flame up the greave, and solid on the foot...
the next layer was P3 Khador Base defining the shape of the flames on each seperate section...
next i layered up with P3 Heartfire (an orange-yellow), then P3 Cygnus Yellow, and finally Cygnus mixed with some White...
i got a little carried away with each layer, which made the overall effect a lot more yellow than i had wanted, but this was my first try at it...
next time i will go much heavier on the dark tones, and just use the yellow to define the shape instead of dominate the design...
live and learn...
cheers

Hey, nice mini.
Over to criticism.
The green is pretty much as it should be.
The bronze screams for better (stronger) highlites.
if you can do NMM do it somewhere, the bronze is to uniform and goes to well in with the leather brown which also looks a tad boring and without depth.
More colour and variation is needed in the bronze-black mass,
Use contrasts to create depth like the rivets on the leatehr tabard etc, could stand out more.
The one thing I really dont like is the backpack. Its uniform and booring, use the tube pieces between the pack and the side bulbs/vents to add colour (I did it on my korsarro and pretty much every well painted mini).
The bulbs themselves can have some more highliting to set them slightly apart from the dark bronze-black boring mass.
The black on the backpack though is really in a need to be highlited up. Why did you paint such a nice green armour (shading) and do simple lines on the black backpacks contours?
Do the backpack in the same style like the green armour.
Good luck dude, hope you win

fair points Pryiel...
most of the points you brought up will be corrected with better photo editing for the final pics...
the metals are all highlighted up to pure silver, but i killed it in editing...
the more i look at the pics, the more i notice that i killed a lot of my extreme highligts, and even some mid-tones...
the backpack has a lot of coal black on it that is not showing:(...
i do need to add some damage though...
other than that, i think i'm gonna fix the gem, take some new pics, and call it good...
too many other projects to finish...
thanks, man...
cheers

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |
