Could anyone explain to me the general idea of Warmachine & Hordes? Can you compare it to 40k and FWH?

I was always a bigger fan of the smaller GW games like necromunda, warhammer quest, and mordenheim. I really liked the feel of individual models gaining a personality all to their own. I never looked into anything other than GW since that is pretty much the only store near me that sell any kind of miniatures. So I guess I am wondering if these games might interest me?

I would say no you cant compare it to 40k to be honest it is a smaller games system
unless you get into the larger size games.
For instance 15 points my list has no more than 8 models in my army
For myself at my local club we dont go bigger than 35 points and i get 18 models
As for the Characters/solos and even some units and jacks (Large steam driven robots)! they all act individually.
Rather than moving everything then moving on to a shooting phase then combat as in 40k.
Its all done individually EG - Solo character first you move, shoot or do magic all in one go.
Its very hard to explain to be honest.
so this system is quite small and is usually played on 4ft boards.
A 35 point game could be played in a hour when you used to the ruleset.
I am a 40k Convert this system requires more thought and tactics i would recomend this to
anyone and is a great game system and to be honest its all we play mainly at our club.
I do still play 40k but i mainly play as a break from warmachine.

Sounds cool. Would Hordes be the fantasy setting?

They're both Fantasy and exist in the same world and can be played against each other.

the scale of the game is not as small as skirmish level but not as large as 40k. you do have units of nameless grunts and generic machines running around but the leader of each army MUST be a warcaster character and there are numerous other character models.
there is no progression like you would find in mordhiem or necromunda. you dont keep track of any information from one game to the next, nor do you ever buy any equipment for any model.
i posted recently in a separate recent thread about how 40k and warmachine compare for army building but the gameplay is vastly different. the game is won when you kill the enemy's leader -which is also his most powerful and versatile piece-, this alone changes the game dynamic as you can find you have sacrificed most of your army but in a position to win.
you should take a look at the quickstart rules that are posted on their website.

If you play in a campaign/league, there are rules for bonds developing between the warcaster and their jack. When they do develop, you'll roll on a table and pick one out of three that are available for that roll.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
