Normally how I paint my ork's green skin is the GW way with orkhide shade, knarloc green and goblin green layered respectively. Sometimes, for things like nobs and warbosses I add an extra highlight of goblin green + bleached bone. If Im being really lazy, I just paint goblin green with a thraka green wash.

However Im looking into painting some Bad Moons, and other than the yellow to help differentiate from my other orks, I was thinking of an alternate way of painting green ork skin, thinking something either a little darker, or duller than the previous GW method (which is quite bright). Saw a good one involving Catachan Green, Camo green, devlan mud wash then higlhights with camo green.

Just wanted to know if DakkaDakka has any other ideas? Cheers

I generally paint hues according to size: nobz & bosses are DARK green with highlights (think Dark Angels) and boyz are about what GW recommends. Grots, I always do bright green.

Check out my grot in the gallery-- I think he's a bit darker than the standard GW scheme while still being green and mean.

I used Orkhide Shade->Snot Green -> Snot Green+Scorpion Green -> Scorpion Green lightly washed -> Ogryn Flesh wash to top it all off.

I liked the result a lot, maybe you will too.

I've always kinda painted my orks a darker color, Makes easier for good highlites and the like.

I started with a basecoat of Black -> Darkangles Green (Shade) -> Snot green (Tone) -> Goblin Green (Highlight)

Wetbrushing it all on makes a really nice gradual highlight for ork skin, and since there is a lot of surface area for them its easy to do so.

I've seen some interesting orks done in a more 'natural' tone by painting them in pale tones of brown, then tinting them green by painting thraka over the top. I think I saw the tut on here, so a search may help.

In the past I have washed my orks with green ink mixed with brown for a more 'natural' look and green mixed with blue for a deeper, richer finish.

If there's going to be some yellow on the model, I would suggest the blue / green mix as this should add a bit of contrast.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

For the Boyz I use goblin green, dark green ink and then Badab Black wash.

For Nobz and bigger I use snot green, dark greenk ink and Badab Black wash.

My orks are a bit brighter than most. I use goblin green. At least 2 Thraka washes. Highlight with Camo green. 1 - 2 more washes depending on how much Camo I used. Then highlight with a dry brush with camo green and beastial brown (knuckles etc.) If you check out my gallery the KFF Mech is a good example of how this turns out. It is lighter than most, just another heads up.

I have started experimenting with Privateer's Ordic Olive + lighter GW greens to highlight. The Ordic Olive is a very nice shade of green Imo.

Thanks for the advice guys, though I think this idea of having contrast between the Bad Moonz colours and the ork skin is a great idea.

I just use multiple washes of Thraka Green over white. Once I get it to the right shade, I do a light wash of Devlan Mud.
