If a dwarf takes a rune on his weapon does that mean that the weapon no longer functions as a hand weapon in close combat?
That is to say, if he has a runed axe and a shield, does he still recieve the bonus +1 to save for having a hand weapon and shield?

Hmm.
I don't think so. If a great weapon loses its status as a great weapon, I think a hand weapon just becomes a magic weapon, which IIRC doesn't get the +1 for HW and Shield.

A hand weapon is *defined* as any weapon which has no special properties. A runic weapon is therefore not a handweapon.

It's said that if you put a Rune on a weapon or you have a runic magic item its consider like a "magical item" so this lose the "hand weapon" if you have a runic weapon and became a "magical weapon"

When you add a rune a dwarf weapon becomes magical. It also "lose all the original qualities of the weapon." The parry bonus is defined as a mundane handweapon and shield. I do not believes you can claim the parry bonus for a Dwarf Character with a magical HW/SH.
Most times this is a non issue: dwarf characters minimum armor save should be 3+ (gromil+sh), a rune of stone to boost it to another +1 is a minimal points investment.

That is what I was trying to figure out really... if it is no longer mundane (which makes sense) then I'd have to reconsider
whether I want a simple rune on a weapon rather than keep the rune off and go for a 1+ save with a character on foot.

ah fair enough I found your right I was always told they still counted as a hand weapon but I looked in the Rule book and Dwarf army book and cannot find where it says this and GW wasn't clear on the errata and FAQ

If I refer to Armybuilder 3,1 they dont consider runic weapon as hand weapon (with shield) and the bonus. In fact, you can check at the beginning of the Dwarf runes section in Runic Magic on page 43 of the codex.
