I'm a 40k player that has been thinking about starting Cryx because they are ultra (un)sexy. I don't exactly undertsand how to start. I've heard you need the Rulebook, although there are "QuickStart Rules" on the Privateer Press page. Plus, not all of the Factions have their own Code- I mean Army Book.

Help?

first, the quickstart rules are on this page. http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/the-game
the quickstart rules have a simplified ruleset omitting rules about troops, terrain, and such. they also give you the stat cards for the 4 faction starter boxes to be used in mk.2 (all the ones on shelves were produced with the old rules).
when youve tried a few games with the quickstart rules you are ready for the full prime mk.2 book.
in warmachine you do not need to get your army book at all, the models come packaged with cards for their rules so all you need is prime and a set of cards. the books collect the whole faction's releases from the last several years into a single updated volume and add new stuff but the rules are redundant because of the cards.
unfortunately because of the recent shift to the new rules many old models on the shelves(but not all) still have old cards. faction specific card decks were made to help old players catch up. these are labeled as 2010 mk. 2 decks, do not be mistaken by decks not labeled 2010.

barring the rule book, i would start with the cryx battle box, this contains Deneghra, or Dirty D, as i like to refer to her. She is a rad first warcaster. From there i would look at Bile-thralls, as they are the suck for anyone you are fighting.( they blow up and kill people )

When looking at warmachine from a 40K perspective, you must realize that warmachine is all about synergy, and awesome combos. Additionally, the game is never lost in warmachine as long as your warcaster is alive.

I would advise against biles and take mechanithralls instead. They are more basic (and have cooler figs )

besides that a skarlock can make a nice extra for denny, otherwise maybe a pistolwraith. Those 2 are really usefull solos that can help you during a game in different ways.

- Skarlock can cast a spell (max 3 focus), this frees up focus for other things
- pistolwraith can shoot solos and single models or freeze jacks in place (allowing autohits...)

The pistol wraith's death chill ability does not allow autohits. The model hit (with all three pistol attacks) has to sacrifice their movement or action during their next activation.

I thought it also allowed autohits (as per making models stationary.) I am probably wrong then, but tried to do it from memory, so I can make a mistake on that...
