hello,
to people who run mech IG, and those that face them, what would the least number of Vet squads you'd recommend? and the Maximum number?
when fielding the other FOC slots after troops, do you stick with armor 12, or get some armor 14?

i'm trying to drop the hybrid part of my list and go all mech. i feel i'm getting comforable with about five Vet squads. it just seems like so few bodies. especially compaired to the platoon element i'm cutting out.
and i kind of like the idea of staying in the AV 12 range with the rest of my FOC selections. but i'm affraid that if i don't get at least 3 AV 14 tanks, everything else might disappear quicker than hoped. and 3 tanks,
because 2 won't probably last very long. god, old habits die hard!

thanks

Minimum: 0.
Maximum: 4.

I wouldn't recommend dropping platoon elements in favor of Veterans. If anything, I'd do it the other way around.

The eye of terror.

IG have the enviable position of having troops that can actually kill things too (vets).

However, I would still attempt to bring an infantry platoon in any list simply to have some cheap, non-vital units that can still score objectives.

The problem with taking vets as your only scoring units is that if your opponent kills them they are getting a 2-for-1 deal, where they kill a scoring unit as well as a damage unit.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

A good mix of troops for IG is 2 vet squads with 3x melta and 1 platoon, giving the pcs 4xflamers and hvy weapons in the squads (usually autocannons) and a flamer.

Give them all chimeras and have a go.

If everyone is mounted I go all vets, but I usually end up dumping so many points into my heavy support that I only have 2. Higher point games I run 4. I find that because they are so valuable to take objectives I only equip them with a lascannon and have them fire from out of the chimera, and generally try to stay away from the enemy. Most opponents wont ever shoot at your veterans when they are staring down 6 basilisk barrels, which allows you to make a mad dash for the objectives on turn 5 pretty much unscathed (assuming your gun line is intact)

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake.

I gotta admit I love my vets. I run 5 squads w/ chimeras.

2 are plasma vets with an autocannon. Place them on an objective inside a chimera. Good luck closing range on up to 2 str 7 ap4, 6 str 7 ap2, 3 str 5 ap 4, 3 str 6 ap 6 shots per turn. It is a nasty objective sitter, putting out between 11 and 14 high strength shots per turn. Might even be worth it to throw a stubber on there, but I haven't run them that way.

The other 3 are melta vets in chimeras. pretty straight forward. At first I had a lot of trouble with them because I treated them too carelessly. Now my vets do not get out of their chimera until it explodes, and I use 2 CCS melta squads as my sac squads.

I would run at LEAST 3 squads of vets and wouldn't be shocked to see 6 squads on the field. In 2500 pt games I run six.

My current list is 7-1-0 (although I only play against 3 different people for the most part, so I may just have a handle on my meta game.

Gwar: I'm going to quit while I can.

Meh, close enough
