Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I played my first game of fantasy today and I need some help. I am a long time 40k player so I know a little bit of what is going on, but for the most part I am clueless.

I wanted to learn to play fantasy and to meet new people since I am new to the area so I joined a league to play some games.

The league has the rules of 2250 points, and you can’t use special characters, no more than 700 points in Lords/Heroes, and 900 points in core.

I decided to play Warriors of Chaos and I am regretting my choice. I did not really look at their new army book and they took out a lot of the core from the old book, and there is not much left in there.

I came up with this list:

Lord
Sorcerer Lord, MoT, Power Familiar, Disc of Tzeentch, Level 4

Heroes
Chaos Sorcerer, Level 2
Exalted Hero, MoT, BsB, Blasted Standard

Core
25 Warriors, Champion, Musician, Standard Bearer, Shields
20 Marauders, Champion, Musician, Standard Bearer, Light Armor
12 Marauders, Champion, Musician, Flails
6 Marauders Horseman, Musician, Spear, Throwing Axes
6 Marauders Horseman, Musician, Flails
5 Chaos Warhounds
5 Chaos Warhounds

Special
6 Chaos Knights, Champion, Musician, Standard Bearer
Chaos Chariot

Rare
Dragon Ogre Shaggoth

I played my first game today against Skaven and I ended up tying, but it was more like a loss. I got lucky because his Grey Seer rolled a 2 on the miscast table, and I ended up making about 4 leadership checks with my Lord/Chaos Knights at -3 when they were in a sea of rats.

I think I either need to drop the BSB and add another sorcerer, and go magic heavy (the Skaven player had a Grey Seer and 3 Engineers) or try to add some combat and go with some Lord and some killing power.

How can I improve my list?

What equipment do your characters have?

Why a block of 25 warriors? 15 is more than enough.

Is this based on what you have? Are you willing to add to it?

What did not go right with the battle? WFB is really a different animal from 40K. The game is much less forgiving - an early mistake or a bad army match up can make the whole game run down hill. Just getting used to the movement rules can take half a dozen games or more.

Splitting the Warriors into 2 units is good advice.
Not so sure about the Shaggoth - I've never been able to use one effectively.

I don't see any marks in your army list. MoS will go a long way to cutting down on leadership tests.

Ahhhhh now those are some beautiful restrictions! But you're right, 900 points with WoC means you're pretty dedicated to infantry combat - my WoT army is one of the few chaos armies I've seen that actually clocks in at 900+ in core, and it's certainly atypical.

I agree with the comment on needing marks on many things - MoS is the default choice I suppose, particularly when you're starting out and the psych protection is particularly forgiving - and that 20 warriors is about as many as you could ever want. Where does your BSB go? I'd just attach his banner to that unit, give them MoT and call it good. And one other thing, the shaggoth is really not very good, at all. I like to run sub-optimal choices and even I can't deal with taking him. A giant will serve you better as far as big monsters go, though I've been taking a hellcannon for a good long time now and enjoying it (first turn rampages aside).

Man, I'm tweaking out your list there and finding it hard to make 900 core too, but here's where I'm at:

L: Sorcerer Lord - MoT, level 4, golden eye, roar, disc = 355
H: Exalted - MoT, BSB, collar, shield = 175
H: Sorcerer - level 2, infernal puppet = 155

C: 20 Warriors - MoS, rapturous standard, full command, shields = 370
C: 20 Marauders - MoS, full command, shields, light armor = 150
C: 5 Horsemen - MoS, musician, spears, t.axes = 96
C: 5 Horsemen - MoS, musician, flails, light armor = 96
C: 10 Marauders - MoS, musician, flails = 69
C: 10 Marauders - MoS, musician, flails = 64
C: 5 Warhounds = 30
C: 5 Warhounds = 30

S: 6 Knights - MoT, blasted standard, standard, musician = 330
S: Chariot - MoS = 130

R: Hellcannon = 205
-------
2250

I ended up going with the hellcannon because it's cheaper than a giant and I needed to route some points into core ... Ended up with another flanking marauder unit, for the cost of 2 horsemen, which seems like a decent enough trade. Personally I'd take gw over flails on the marauders, and the conversion is a simple one to pull off.

EDIT: Was @ 895 core, so swapped the level 4's power familiar over for the oh-so-lovely roar, and added light armor to the flailing horsemen.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I ended up putting the BSB in with the Warriors because I wanted to protect my investment.

I see the point of MoS because I was hit by this spell that caused a panic check, and that was unpleasant.

As far as why I took the units I did, I played a few games 5 years ago, and so when I joined the league I thought I would be no problem fielding an army. But when I got my army out (it has been so long since I played, and the army has traveled through many moves and many states that it took a while to find all of it) that I was surprised by what I had.

In the old codex everything was core, and so when I put all of the core that I owned out there, I barely came up with 900 points. Not only that, but I was use to running super expensive Tzeentch characters, and demons to fill up my army, that when I totaled up all of the points, I came in at only 2000 points total. So to make up for my missing 250 points I threw a Shaggoth into the army. I have 4 spawns that I have used for 40k that I was going to use, but they are in a state of repair right now so they were unusable.
