Just watched this movie, I had heard about it earlier in the week when my music teacher asked me to learn "Lux Aeterna", which I found out was the theme for the movie. I wasn't expecting much, but after having watched it...I find myself shaking. I found this movie to be one of the most deeply disturbing, emotional, mind-numbing experiences of my entire life.

Don't get me wrong, this movie was one of the best acted, filmed, and directed movies I have ever seen in my life, but I found that it affected me on a deeper level than your average summer blockbuster. The content was disturbing, and the fact that the director portrayed the fall of these poor people was incredibly unnerveing. I would say that I'm a pretty "tough" guy when it comes to movies. It takes alot to make me cry out of emotional distress (when it's affecting others that is, if it affects me it's not as hard) but I actually cried at the conclusion of this movie.

Did anyone else have a similar experience after viewing this film? If not, how did you feel after watching it?

Now go watch Donnie Darko. It'll seem like Little Mermaid comparatively.

Enjoy your day or so of depression.

'The Rules of Attraction' is another depressing film, although there are light moments in it. But yeah, 'Requiem'... pretty grim.

Actually, I hated both that and 'Donnie Darko'. Just wasn't into them. I thought 'Darko' in particular was garbage - 'The Science of Sleep' is a much better film in a (slightly!) similar style. Plus it won't make you want to kill yourself! Bonus!

Try watching SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL

Its really testing the limits of human emotion ( in this case about Lieutenant-General Roméo A. Dallaire )
I mean as a human being , he really did the best any human is capable of. But at the end he was only human , and he
can only do so much , he attempted committing suicide multiple times because he felt he couldn't save enough lives.
IMO he is the best shinning example of what humanity has to offer.
So basically the war was so bad , between 800,000 to 1,171,000 died.
Within that magnitude UN still decided to evacuate the troops. Reducing Dallarire's force down to
260 volunteers without any support. This group of 260 pretty much put in their own lives and rescued 32,000

Requiem for a Dream is a pretty polarising movie. I love it, and think the last 15 minutes is about as powerful as cinema gets, but I understand why some people don't like it (style over substance, couldn't get past the fantastical depiction of drugs).

I didn't get a similarly depressing vibe from Donnie Darko. It's a great movie and sets the mood of teenage alienation really well, but I don't think we're really supposed to relate to Donnie's story in the same way as Requiem. It kind of surprises me that people think of that film as depressing, to be honest, but I guess if there's a million viewers there'll be a million different viewing experiences.

For films that will leave you horrendously depressed? Try Irreversible. Or Dead Man Walking. Or Leaving Las Vegas. Or Once Were Warriors.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Requiem is one of my top films of all times. It is amazing, and amazingly dark. I was similarly stunned the first time.

The hardest I cried at a movie, though, was Dancer in the Dark. Sobbed like a baby at that sucker.

Yeah it definitely portrays a very fuzzy line of addiction, and what it means to be addicted. You don't need drugs to end up there.

As for movies that will wrench your heart and soul up, after seeing Munich, nothing compares. Munich is a movie that I personally think is one of the best flicks to have ever been released, completely underexposed. Potentially because even the people who champion it, refuse to watch it again for fear of the emotional strain it WILL induce.

I read the Wiki notes. Thats sounds stupidly depressing, as in the "I just wished they all died and I had the two hours of my life back" depressing.

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? I dont think i like any "dark" films, primarily because its always NME reading greebos that think they are "phat"

I liked "The Running Man" quite alot! ;D

Donnie darko, while a good film didnt really give me an emotional responce however it did completely mess up my veiws on reality for about an hour (it was around 4 in the morning though and i hadnt slept for over 24 hours so it may not have been the film) to the level at which when i stared into the mirror i didnt recognise my own face after i looked for any length of time.

'Hunger' is another bleak, but amazing film. It's centers around the IRA 'blanket men', specifically Bobby Sands' hunger strike. There is actually very little political message in the film - it instead focuses on the brutalising effect of desperation and de-humanisation.

It's not exactly 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective'.
