Bounding Ultramarine Assault Trooper
|
I am a Fluffy Nutter, and want to create a "Fluffy" army. What do you think of the following list?
Sicarius (HQ)
Tacticat Squad (Troop)
-Power Fist
-Lascannon
-Meltagun
-Rhino with Extra Armor
Tactical Squad (Troop)
-Power Fist
-Multi-melta
-Meltagun
-Rhino with Extra Armor
Tactical Squad (Troop)
-Power Weapon
-Heavy Bolter
-Plasma Gun
-Rhino with Extra Armor
Assault Squad (Fast Attack)
-Power Fist
-3 Plasma Pistols
-Meltabomb
Land Raider with Multi-melta and Extra Armor (Heavy Support)
The idea is that you leave 1/2 of the first Tactical Squad behind to guard an objective, all the while blasting away with the Lascannon. The other 1/2 goes into the Land Raider with Sicarius. This would give you 4 units to attack with, all moving 6" to 12" per turn, and consisting of Troops, so you can claim objectives.
Not a TH/SH, Land Raider, Lysander, Pedro, melta spam net list, but could still be effective. What do you think?

First off I'm wondering about your points. Are you sure that's 1500? It looks like you have a lot less than that. 3 tactical squads is good for that level. You need them to take objectives. Personally I dislike plasma pistols on assault squads. They work great, but you use them once or twice in the entire game. Usually once. The points you spend on them can be better spent on other things that are more effective over all.

Yeah, it's 1,500 points. I know what you mean, though. I see an Orc or Tyranid army on the table, and cry. I have 41 Marines, and they have like 200 miniatures...BEFORE the tanks/ MC's!
The realy reson that I went with so many heavy weapons, as well as the Plasma Pistols on the Assault troops is that I play against a lot of armor. Plasma Pistols are good for shooting at all the AV 10 rear armor.
I'm not joking either. My best friend has a 9 tank Imperial Guard list for 1,500 points. He is not very good at objective missions, but who cares when you can blast most stuff off the table by Turn 4...

Not the best HQ choice IMO. Too expensive for what he offers. I'm not sure you should rely on a captain to add some extra punch to one of your tac combat squads. They should really be avoiding assaults. I think a chaplain with your assault squad would work better as a HQ choice with this list

These look good. Rhinos/Rzrbacks great, but i'd drop the extra armour though. Also, you could swap out the HB for a missile launcher, but that is up to you.
CaptainLoken wrote:Assault Squad (Fast Attack)

These guys don't always get the love they deserve on the boards, but I've found them most effective in two squads of ten with a chaplain attached to one of them. I think the Plasma pistols are a bit over-costed, because you may only get one round of shooting before assault and also there's the 'Gets Hot!' rule to consider too. The fist should give you the edge vs the vehicle's rear armour anyway.
CaptainLoken wrote:Land Raider with Multi-melta and Extra Armor (Heavy Support)
Not the best Heavy choice if you're not transporting Terminators. However, the multimelta and the EA are good choices for a LR if you're set on keeping it.
Just my thoughts though! Hope they help!

First off Fluffy doesn't mean you have to be weak and FYI Sicarius loves Drop Pods
CaptainLoken wrote:Sicarius (HQ)
ok for Fluffy sake but if that's the case you should be using his Command squad which are a good unit in their own right
Tacticat Squad (Troop)

Tactical Squad (Troop)
-Power Fist
-Multi-melta
-Meltagun
-Rhino with Extra Armor
Tactical Squad (Troop)
-Power Weapon
-Heavy Bolter
-Plasma Gun
-Rhino with Extra Armor
I would drop the extra armour and upgrade to Razorbacks if you plan on combat squading anyways
Assault Squad (Fast Attack)
-Power Fist
-3 Plasma Pistols
-Meltabomb
Flamer would preform better than the Plasma Pistols, no sense taking meltabombs if you got a Powerfist, personally I would drop everything but the PowerFist
Land Raider with Multi-melta and Extra Armor (Heavy Support)
what would be interesting would be to drop the Jump Packs on the Assault Marines and stuff them into the Land Raider with Sicarius

Not sure what a hooch is but, you would use your Rhinos/Razorback to screen the Land Raider.
Also I wouldn't say that Tacticals aren't killy. Yes they are not TH/ SS Terminator killy, Nob Mob Killy, Seer Council Killy, but compared to other Troop choice they are up there. +3 armour saves, special weapon, heavy weapon, and a Sargent what can be equipped to just about suit any need you like, with a leadership of 9 to boot. I could go on but don't under estimate Tactical squads.

Nah the trick is to ... well one thing put something nasty in the Land Raider then hide it. Most Opponents you face will see your concern for keeping the Land Raider safe which we make them focus on it even more which forces them to over commit to it, try to maneuver to get a clean shot, or just fire at it which you can get a obscured save if you position your Rhino right. It works all the time for me.

While you're correct, there's no point mentioning this. Battle Sisters and Ork boys are also better troops than Tactical squads, but that doesn't mean anything to a SM player. We've gotta work with what we've got.
The problem with Tactical squads is they're not specialised. If we were able to give them 2 special weapons, or even 2 heavy weapons, then atleast they'd have a more definitive purpose. Tactical squads are there to backup your more specialised squads. They may not be able to take down a whole squads of Berzerkers by themselves, but they're pretty good at finishing off a half strength unit. They may not be able to outshoot a TFC or a Dakka predator, but with a heavy weapon atleast they can do something at long range.

Using a Land Raider as mobile cover is great if you actually have units behind it worth protecting. As it stands you're only protecting tactical squads, which aren't particularly dangerous in their own right. It also seems a waste to field a Land Raider and have nothing worthwhile to put inside it.

Gray Hunters are good but lack the heavy weapon, only able to equip a powerfist or a power weapon, and have no Sarge so have a 8 leadership.

If you drop the Land Raider and get a Devestator Squad ( LC/MLx3? 250) (( LC/ PC, HB, HB? 260), you've got a Demi-Company. Find a way to work in Sicarious' Command Squad (Std, Champ, RB) and it's complete!
And the Award for Best Army Composition goes to...

I actually have the entire Ultramarines 2nd Company...6 TAC's with Rhinoes, 2 ASS, and 2 DEV's with Rhinoes, Sicarius with Command Squad and Razorback, and two Dreadnoughts. I recently bought 2 Land Raiders and 2 Predators. All together, that is over 5,000 points.
I was just trying to figure out what a good army would be at a smaller point level. 1,500 points is enough to have half of a company, but is that going to be tough enough to take on the new Nids, Space Wolves, and super IG?
Thoughts?

I'm working on getting to where you are, then. I've got one Tac squad, and 1/2 an Assault Squad to go on my Second Co.
Honestly, I think that a Demi-Company does fine against most lists at 1750-2000, and needs support from 2K-2.5K. I haven't actually tried it at 1500, but that's also the point where I start to reconsider Sicarious. I love the guy, too, he's constantly underestimated and does so much for your army he's a powerhouse, BUT, after you include him here, you're looking at 1300 points. Considering our average unit price is already above 200 points (before transport), you're going to get down to 4-6 units in addition to him. Making one of these a Land Raider, and three of them Tactical Squads is kinda shafting yourself IMHO.
If I had to drop my 1750 Demi-Co down to 1500, I'd drop the third Tactical squad first, and keep the Assault and Devestator squad. 20 Scoring Tactical Marines (well supported and deployed carefully) is usually enough for me at 1000-1500. At 1750 I feel it's worth the step up to 30. That's just my take, though. I think you're onto something good here. Carry on, brother!

Cool. Thanks for the advice. I've been playing aroud with the following:
(Old List)
Sicarius
Chaplain w/ JP, MB
CS w/ Stand, Cham, 2 X PW, MB
TAC w/ PF, MM, MG, MB
TAC w/ PW, LC, PG
ASS w/ PF, 3 X PP, MB
DEV w/ LC, 3 X ML
Rhino
Rhino
1495
(New List)
Sicarius
CS w/ Stand, Cham, 2 X PW, MB
TAC w/ PF, MM, MG, MB
TAC w/ PW, LC, PG
Term w/ HF, 2 X CF
LR w/ MM, EA
LR w/ MM, EA
Rhino
1490
I can add in a few options to make them full 1,500 point lists, but you get the idea. We'll just have to see which one does better at the 1,500 point level.
Thanks for the input. Automatically Appended Next Post: I had to edit my last post.
By the way, do you find a lot of people with entire companies around? I have enough to make the entire 2nd company, but I have never used it. It seems to me that they would suffer even in Apocalypse games, as super "D" strength units would just wipe them off the board with each shot. What are your thoughts/experience?

I've worked on a full company off and on, but yeah. It doesn't seem feasible to field and be successful as a company with no help from other companies. Should have a third troop at that level, but looks like an enjoyable list to play.

Yeah, I want to throw down a Battle Company formation someday for Apocolypse, never tried it though. It does seem like they would be sitting ducks...
Of course, I'd want that Vindicator Line Breaker Squadron, a Predator Assassin Squadron, and a pair of Warhounds on my side, too! Maybe that will be enough to draw off the D fire.
Then again, you could do the Spear of Sicarious formation and just go with Drop Pods. I'd love to see a game large and crazy enough to deploy from Thunderhawks, too.

Thunderhawks would be amazing. Drop off the Marines, and then make attack runs...
Unfortunately, I think we would have to play in the parking lot!!!
After reading Titanicus, I really want to build a Warhound Titan. With Skitarii support as well....
Am I thinking too big here?
I would love to see a whole Company in action...

I can still remember when a box of 30 Space Marines was $30.00. Now THAT'S old school! In fact, I started playing in the Rogue Trader days...yes, I am that old. Played Warhammer Fantasy for years before Rogue Trader even came out...

For a while I was going to get up to 9 squads of deathwing terminators just for the fun of it. If you include back up from extra bikers and speeders and a few terminators then you could field a company just fine.
I'd think a fluffy army would be like command squad with a few veterans backed up by a lot of regular marines and everything would have a transport capable of holding the entire squad.
Stick to having only 1 captain with at a time. Things like that. They wouldn't assign 10 librarians or chaplains to one company, just have a few.
Think as big as your pocket book can afford and that you have time to paint.

Nice list but to be honest you would have to Fear Units like War walkers Dreadnuts and Killer Cans Let alone Wreathloads and with it being 1,500 some may get a Great Daemon in there see if you cant change the Rhinos for Razerbacks For that extra Kick in the Shooting phase Also becareful with Nids being the Main Armys ( due to the codex release ) you will have a higher Number of units to deal with the Troops are ok but I would take 1 out and take a Dev team of Heavy bolters for Crowd control Nid,Elder.Dark elder,IG cant hold up to a Heavy Bolter AP 5 = Dead elder/Dark elder/IG and Nids.
Also, the HB would Rip a Wrathlord to peaces think about it 4 Hb at 3 D6 each 4x3 = 12 D6 at 1 Wreathload he will hate life or go down hating you for it..
10 man team Vs 12 D6....I think we know the winner is ( just as long as you roll good numbers lol )
just My ideas for you mate ( im old school Marine 3-4ed but I am now getting back into the game with a chaos army with the same Idea as that less the Razorbacks)
I hope I helped you my friend

Here's the maths:
12 shots = 8 hits = 1.33 wounds = 0.44 unsaved wounds. Pretty certain that Wraithlord won't care about the heavy bolters...

The Wreathload was a 3rd Ed. MC....If I remember correctly, it was not a Greater Daemon, but what was left behind after a Great Unclean One...

I'm much more afraid of Dreadnuts, to be honest. I think I got one of those in my Krispy Kremes this morning. It's that cinnamon one in the back that keeps leering at the powdered sugar with madness in it's eye.
