Now I suppose this question could also apply to Tomb Kings or anything that can have models added back to unit.

Can a unit that is engaged to both the front and rear add more models to their unit?

We have been playing that they can.

Much like when a unit attacking another in rear moves forward as the ranks dwindle, to remain engaged in the combat.

We figured that newly summoned/added units would then push them back with added ranks, still being sure to keep them engaged in combat.

This remains unclear to me what would be proper or the RAW

Actually most if not all players I know (either personally or via the net) play by the rule that if you're charged from both the rear and the flank, you can not add any more ranks.

Simply treat the rear charge as an impassable terrain / table edge for the purposes of raising - pushing enemy models back with raising is kindda illegal (not to mention freaky situations when the enemy has some terrain/units/table edge behind him or simply sabotaging his advance by few crucial inches) and the only way you can raise anything when being surrounded is when your unit only has a single rank, allowing you to expand sidewards.
Other than that - a definite no-no

Same here - pushing units backwards is a complete nono, as you have no permission to do so.

Agreed you cannot raise any models in the rear to add a new rank. You can however raise to fill the last rank in the unit. As you do not have permission to push units.

Could they not add more units along the sides?

Because that is explicitly not allowed by the raising rules - you must raise to the rear

Thanks, sorry for not knowing, I'm still really new to WHFB & just started putting together my 1st VC list.

Is there a rule that allows the unit in the rear to move forward if a rank is destroyed?

Yes, the tidy up phase of fighting a combat - the rear unit is moved forward to maintain contact.
