I am going to be participating in a Battleforce tourny in a few weeks.

A battleforce tourny is where you buy a battleforce box at the sponsoring store and play in the tourny using only the models in the battleforce set. you can buy any upgrades you wish as long as only the models present in the box are used. the winner of the tourny gets a free battleforce box

I will be purchasing the Space marine battleforce. 5 assault marines, 5 scouts, 15 tactical marines and a rhino

what would a balanced list for these models.

due to the nature of the Tourny there will not be any vehicles besides basic transports(devilfish, rhinos, ect)

i was thinking

5 assault marines, sergeant with a power weapon and plasma pistol. marine with a plasma pistol

5 scouts, all with CCWs and bolt pistols

10 tactical marines. Sergeant with power weapon and plasma pistol. Flamer, Missile launcher, and Rhino with hunterkiller and stormbolter

5 tactical marines, sergeant with power weapon and plasma pistol

Maybe get camo cloaks for the scouts so they can infiltrate into objectives or forward terrain and wait for a prime assault opportunity.

Other than that, good luck. Can you squeeze in another SB on the Rhino? 4 shots a turn at 24" at that points level can be a big help...or 8 shots at 12" (w/ a 6" move) with a squad inside.

If I understand the format correctly, you seem to be doing it wrong. As I understand it, point totals do not matter, only the fact that the models come from a battleforce box.

The best strategy to win this tourny is to find which battleforce has the most points built into it. Buy that one as it will give you a substantial advantage during the tournament. Then when you win get the battleforce that you want.

Since this will be a battle under 1k, you also need to consider which armies are actually good at smaller point games, and orks come to mind. Their battleforce, however, only comes to ~200 points, so is not worth it. The necron battleforce seems like a great opportunity to win this thing, as it has some of the highest model count AND point count.

That is true... a Necron battleforce has an amazing point value. Odd that I never realized that.

I'd say go for it. Then, when/if you win, get the marine one. If you don't, I'm sure you could trade the 'Cron one for a marine one on the internets...

Personally I'd probably go with the Ravenwing battleforce just for the fun of it. Six bikes, attack bike with multi melta and master of the ravenwing.

But as far as the list you have. Like the guy before me said. If you just have to worry about the battleforce itself. Take every little upgrade you can find like melta bombs and standards (where you can) and that kind of thing. I've done similar things before with friends. The winner usually worked in as many special characters and upgrades as they could. Will they let you play one of the tactical squad as a librarian or a chaplain or something?

It is unfortunately scout snipers you get with the SM Battleforce so camocloacks and Missile Launcher.

Points is no barrier so why haven't the Sargeants got PFs?

I'd be tempted by either the Necron Box or the Tau box in the Tau box you can have a Shas'o and totally kit him out for non-death (2+ save, 4+ Inv, FnP, 4 wounds, 2 Shield drones), split the FWs into Pathfinders with Warfish and 6 FWs and pimp out the Stealth team. It depends I suppose on how limited you are to conversions or using bits?

Is it strictly WYSIWYG or can you for instance equip your Tacticals with a plasma cannon even if they dont have one?

yes i could give the marines a plasma cannon. i already play marines so could use one i already built instead

I don't think PFs will be effective since there won't be any MCs or vehicles with a better rear armor value then 10.

Necrons actually sound really nice. my brother has a codex so i could "borrow" it for the tournement. the Cron box has 3 destroyers, 28 warriors and 3 scarabs IIRC

a T'au battle force won't be able to make the FW something they're not

No charectors unless they are in the battleforce as advertised. so only T'au will have a SC


One thing i could do is make the five man combat squad an assault squad without Jpacks and have them in the rhino


I do have practically any other SM unit so i can make practically any option. i could even do Blood Angels if i wanted. would have to ask about death company though

What about a space wolf battleforce??? Did you consider that? Models are still perfectly useful in marine armies + you get droppod + 20 marines + 5 scouts. And you can play them as normal marines if you wish in the tourney i think.

Marine list for this would look like:

5 Scouts (Camo cloaks, CCW + bolt pistols , Power weapon, melta bomb, Plasma pistol) 125 pts.
5 Assault marines (Droppod with deathwind launcher, Plasma pistol, Sarge has Thunder hammer, stormshield, melta bomb) 220 pts.
5 Tactical marines (Plasma pistol, Power fist, Melta bomb) 135 pts.
5 Tactical marines (Plasma pistol, Power fist, Melta bomb) 135 pts.
5 Tactical marines (Plasma pistol, Power weapon, Melta bomb) 125 pts.

That gives you amazing 740 pts. and 4 scoring units!!!
Only problem may be vehicles because your antitank relies in CC or some plasma pistols.. But you will see max 1 vehicle with max 12 front in the field and with so many squads you should maneuver around the vehicle to get few plasma shots at rear 10 armour. Hope this helps.

Or take them all as Wolfguard for the space wolves boxed set...

are space wolf sets regular marines with upgrade packs?

I agree that necrons are going to win.

The necron BF is 822 points, nothing else comes close.

I would like to say that while not as strong as necron, I think eldar can make a strong showing.

While they can't get anything like Necron's sheer points total, they can take a lot of heavy weapons, and the wave serpent is one of the toughest tanks that will be able to be fielded.

Wave Serpent- tl eml (or star cannons), underslung cannon, stones, star engines, vectored engines

10 Guardians- Star Cannon

War Walker- 2 Star Cannons

10 Dire Avengers- Exarch, Blade Storm, Defend, Power Weapon + shimmer shield.

its a lot of plasma, and the best tank in the tournament...

if it weren't for the scarab swarms, they might even be able to take the cron haha.

The SW squad isn't a regualr squad with upgrades. It's an actual seperate set. SW shoulder pads, wolf furs modeled onto the bodies. Basically it has enough to create either grey hunters, bloodclaws or wolf guard. Some chainsaw arms, bolt pistol arms, bolter arms, 2 plasma guns. Not a single regular marine head, but more than enough helmetless marine heads. But yeah. make 20 wolf guard 5 wolf scouts and a drop pod. Thunder hammer, storm shield power fist wolf claws. Just elite choices and a drop pod. Sounds like the way to go to me.

Editing: Easily over 750 points for the SW force, just did some quick math. SW squad as wolf guard could have 4 Wolf claws (split up into singles or pairs, up to you) 2 thunderhammer/storm shields, 2 storm bolters, 2 Frost axes, 2 Frost blades, 2 power fists. So 466 points for one squad of Wolf Guard. Two of those and 75 points of wolf scouts plus a drop pod.

Editing yet again: Add melta bombs and upgrade one to Arjac Rockfist. There isn't a specific model for him, you just upgrade a wolf guard with TH/SS. So 516 for one squad 636 for the other 55 for Drop Pod with Deathwind, 155 for the scouts with all of the upgrades. So 1362 points, or 1242 if they won't let you upgrade to Arjac.

Just saying it's good point wise for a boxed force. I'd probably do the Ravenwing since it's one I'd enjoy losing with or winning with.

Yeah fun is important but the best selection appears to be cheese puppies though perhaps that is abusing the structure of the tournament for a fun tournament I'd take something else. Eldar look pretty good.

IG are certainly the worst, except possibly the Tyranids they have absolutely nothing now.

Ugh seriously Necrons you guys? Yha its great that you get alot of points but has anyone on this thread realized phase out? With such a low model count in the necrons battle force plus no way to actually get wbb's from a well built battle force list you would be put up against. You would be screwed handidly.

In all honesty looking at them the space marine one is the best you could get from this list I would suggest is.

10 marines. Missle launcher, flamer, powerfist melta bombs.

Chapter master. powersword (or relic blade) digital weapons, plasma pistol.

You can easily make all this from the box. Just stick a banner pole and a crap load of extra bits on one marine and you have a chapter master. Im sure youl be able to scrounge together all the parts for the honor guard.

The list is both flexible. Able to kill all the transports and horde lists you would be up against form the other boxes. Not to mention you have one bad ass close combat squad that can kill anything if you manage to get them up to it.

Go CSM, in the box you have the best troop choices available with an elite squad!

Berzerkers great in CC no point limi oh boy 3 plasma pistols in this unit w Champion with a PW.

Plague Marines t5.. they won tlose an objective.

Possesed Marines..At this level amazing give them Tz or Nurgle icon.

Option to make a chosen marine squad or havoc squad!

CSM should win this hands down. 23 possible models that can hold objectives and 5 models for cc greatness. with a transport. Heavy weapon options heavybolter or missile launcher. Go Chaos, and you will win!

Wolfs are the way to go if you want to win. In the battleforce there are like 4 sets of lighting claws, 8 power weapons, 4 thunder hammers and storm shields, 4 power fists.... Its an awesome kit.

Just a thought on the Space Marine BF. You could take that 5 Man Combat Squad, and just by painting the shoulders White (or whatever your 1st Co accent color is), make them Sternguard instead. Make the Captain Pedro (there's a PF in there with the Assault Squad I think).

Personally, I'd suggest going Ork.
You get 3 nob bodies, 2 PKs and a big Choppa. That can make you 3 Nob Bikers.
10 Boyz for the trukk, 10 Ard boyz for foot slogging shoota action. It is a horribly thin army, but Nob bikers in this limited environment will raise plenty of eyebrows.

I didn't think we could take mulitple sagas on our characters, don't they all have to be different? So only one could have eternal warrior? COuld be wrong though, as I find the rules for it fuzzy a little.

Ork battleforce has 3 PKs. You will have 3 nob bikers. Yes. You will have some (dead) boyz and (blown) trukk. Nob bikers will be killed by some heavy wapon fire. Not really as good as it seems. Still fan of wolf force.

The space wolf box does list wolf guard as a vaild build for the marines that come in it. But if I were to do it in a way that I could respect myself for doing it I'd do 5 wolf scouts with combat blades and 20 grey hunters with 2 plasma guns in each squad. If I wanted to beef them up I'd drop 3 grey hunters to make a small wolf guard and put 1 with each squad. It would be within the instructions included in the battleforce and give leaders to the sqauds.

Yeah the Space wolves can be made into PA Wolf Guard it says so on the box so you could still go with 20 WG and 5 Wolf scouts for an all elite army .

Phase out is ignored? Given that the Necron battle force totals amonst the highest points of any that seems just a tad unfair.

How about using Ravenwing?
