Ok well the tournament is this coming up weekend, but I figured I may as well lay the foundation for the final report. This is my fourth Sooie and I've been unusually pumped about it. My previous experience has generally been good. I'm not a very competitive player so I tend to lose often, but I make up for it with the soft-scores. Linkage: http://www.sooiehammer.com/sooie_2010.htm 2-days, 5 games, and lots of food and beer. In 2008 I won the Crummy Dice Award so I have some not-so fond dice memories. Seriously I failed multiple re-rollable Ld10 Stubborn tests in multiple games.

Other than the Hillbilly this is the closest IdyGT that I am able to make it to. The competition is usually pretty stiff with previous winners including Jordan Braun, Aaron Chapman, and Cody Johnson. Dennis and the guys do a great job of organizing the tourney and the hotel is great. A good time for all involved. *End of Shameless Plug*

This year I am bringing my Slaanesh-focused Warriors of Chaos. I've had a good chunk of this army for over a year, but I really didn't started on it till late September of 2009. I think I've been pretty productive since I graduated in December and my wife gave birth back in August. I will be up late Thursday putting on finishing touches and probably Sunday I'll post army pics and battle reports.

My list is as follows:

Total Roster Cost: 2492

Now you have to understand that I turned this list in back in early December. I "assumed" that I could make it work even if it wasn't too whoopie. After probably 6-8 games with this list I've seen that I should have opted for more Magic and changed up the core options, but oh well too late now. The mini-deathstar has been pretty solid. The BSB and Lord are pretty nifty in combat and the combo of MoS and Rapt Standard is nice. I know that I need to work on my baiting with the dogs and Marauders. I also need to practice working the Knights and Giant together.

Sooie is interesting for a couple of reasons. One is the Blind Deployment. I don't think it has changed, but a corrugated screen is placed down the middle of the table. Each player simultaneously deploys their respective armies. This saves some time, but a bad deployment has bit me in the butt more than once. Second is the scoring. Before each game the TO walks around handing out playing cards. These are based on a deck of cards, but with a Warhammer Fantasy theme to them. On each card is an objective. If you meet the objective you get bonus battle points. If you win you also get to pick the card to keep. At the end of the tourney the person with the best "hand" of five gets a prize. The first year that I attended this was done for the first time. Since no rules were established (regarding how to collect cards) our group used "strategy" to collect a royal flush. The senor of our group won a brand new Mumak.

Friday will be a pre-tourney warm up. We have several players from out of town (even Sir Ian Dennis from Manchester) staying the night Friday so the shop should be full. If I'm not going to be able to finish my army Thursday then I'll be painting Friday afternoon. Friday and Saturday I'm crashing in my friend Vince's room at the hotel. Vince is an older gent, but a great guy and a solid Ogre General. His other armies include Beastmen and Wood Elves. Vince finish 16th overall at Ard Boyz two years ago and always has a great view of the game.

Ok anyways I will update when I have army pictures and/or results.

A rather interesting list, I'm excited to see how it works out for you. Nearly a pure slaanesh theme too, save for that tizz general and smelly BSB

Good luck with the painting and the gaming! Here's hoping the dice don't brutalize you like in 2008

Sooie-Eve Update:

Well, it's been a little nerveracking the last couple of days. We've had a pretty good sized storm move into the area. My hometown got a little bit of snow and ice, but supposedly the location of the Tourney got hit pretty good. As of now the tourney is still a go and I'm going to be departing noonish, but I'm still a bit concerned. Northwest Arkansas is not so much fun to drive around in bad weather.

Painting Progess: I've never crammed this hard (painting wise). I was up again till after midnight last night for the 4th night in the row and I was up again at 6:30 today painting till the boy woke up. I've got two units of Chaos knights that are 80-90% done and the bases of the entire army still need to be drybrushed and flocked. When I get to the game store in Springdale this afternoon I'm going to finish some washes on the leather and then try to fit in a couple of games. I'm going to finish the bases (drybrush and flocking) before I go to bed tonight so that I can sleep without concern.

Mental State: Tired and ready to just roll some dice. A full night of sleep Friday and some beer during our 3rd game on Wednesday will be oh-so-sweet. I think I'm ready as I can be regarding how I'm going to play my army, but we'll see come Saturday morning.

I was about to ask, what the status was. We have at least three here that had to cancel because of weather. Hope you made it safe, and looking forward to the report.

Sooiepalooza 2010 Battle Report

Friday: Well, it was certainly going to be a winter wonderland. Before I left town we already had several inches of snow and it was still coming down pretty good. I got to the game store of the TO and instead of gaming I needed to finish painting. We left before it got dark and got to the hotel about 7ish. We had some burgers and beer and made it back to the room so that I could finish painting and basing. I finished my army at 11:30pm. I finished the last 90% of my army in 4 months. Not too bad considering how they turned out.

Saturday: Showered, shaved, and prepared for battle. Due to the weather we started about an hour and a half late, but that was fine because we had plenty of time to get tables set up and get organized. Out of the 60 or so players that were registered I believe only 10 had to cancel. These were guys were really hit hard by the snow so I’m glad they didn’t risk getting stuck or injured.

Before I go into the report stage I need to say that I do not play Fantasy on a regular basis. I make it to maybe 4-5 Fantasy tourneys a year and outside of tourneys I play maybe 10-12 times a year. I do have 3 guys that I regularly play 40k with that are working on armies so hopefully they will be able to start playing on a regular basis.

As you can also see my army is really soft and I forgot about my Magic Resistance on my Chaos Lord. That would have made a huge difference in two games, but oh well. I’ll be back with a vengeance next year.

Sign In: As we go to sign in and get registered we are handed a nice nametag, a custom-made Tournament book (spiral bound) with our name, army roster, and scoring information. We also got our tourney shirt. They really went all out this year as everything was of high quality and well organized.

Round 1
Opponent (Army): Jason Smith (Ogre Kingdoms)
Location: Little Rock
Jason is a great guy and generally a great player. He’s won multiple Best Sportsmen and comes from the CAWS group out of Little Rock. He starts the game by bribing you with candy and Twinkies (it works).

Scenario: Each player has a pig token. This may be used once during the game as a Power Stone or Dispel Scroll. If not used you get additional Victory points.

The Game: I felt I started the game pretty strong. My early movement was looking good and I was lined up to get some charges with my knights. Turn 2 I moved some Warhounds and my Frenzied Knights (whom were behind the dogs) up the right flank. On his turn he brought his lone Gorger onto the table right in front of my dogs. I figured that if I charged him I could probably get slaughtered then set his Gorger up for a charge by my knights. The dogs and the Gorger whiff both their attacks and I win because I outnumber (facepalm). On his turn I’m thinking yeah he will kill them then I’ll counter-charger. I cause no wounds and he manages to kill 4 of the 5. I’m auto-breaking on anything but snake-eyes so what do you know, I roll snake-eyes. My only Insane Courage of the tourney and it’s on one stinking dog.

I think it’s during this same turn that my Giant is charged by his Tyrant led Maneaters. I have my big block of Warriors right next to him ready for the counter-charge. The Tyrant has the Tenderizer and does what he does best, kill Giants. I roll for the Giant’s Fall Over and he falls right onto my BSB in my unit. I fail my Look Sir Roll and he manages to squish my BSB. Next turn I’ve got my big block in combat with the Maneaters.

Back to the right flank; Gorger kills the lone dog on my turn and charges the Frenzied Knights on his turn. Kills 2 Knights with Killing Blow and then I attack back. I’ve go a total of 10 attacks from the 2 frenzied knights and horses and I do not cause one wound. I roll for my Chaos Lord, not one wound. I roll for my Warriors, not one wound. I some how managed to whiff over 25 attacks in one turn. It was hilarious, but kind of pathetic.

The rest of the game involved him hitting my army over the head with clubs and leaving me with one unit of Warriors. He got the win, but I’ll get my rematch

Record: 0-1

Round 2:
Opponent (Army): Alan Kellar (Wood Elves)
Location: Little Rock
Alan was another great opponent. I could tell that he is a very careful and articulate person and that showed with his army composition and playing style. He had a very minimalist army. I think he had a Wild Rider Lord, Wardance Noble, and a Branchwraith. Each character only had one magic item, but it proved effective. He lots of Wild Riders, Glade Riders, and Dryads. I knew that I was going to have a tough time catching him and I was right. Most of the game involved me falling short on charges or being shot to pieces.

Scenario: We are each given 5 tokens to place on units or characters. For each token that you capture you gain so many VPs.

We both were getting a good laugh out of his shooting phase. He probably spent 2 whole turns shooting at my Giant. We’re talking 40+ shots a turn and getting one wound a turn. During the 3rd round of shooting he toppled the big guy (killing nobody other than some Glade Guard). Of course when he shoots my knights they are dying in droves. It’s weird how that works out sometimes.

Alan got the win in this game. His stripped down army was really effective at avoiding me yet shooting me to pieces. He was a great guy and I would gladly play him again.

Record: 0-2

At this point I’m a little bit discouraged, but I also know that I’ve just played two guys from a strong scene and I’m having fun games.

Round 3:
Opponent (Army): Nathan Thrapp (Lizardmen)
Location: NW Arkansas
Scenario: The Wall. In the past you needed to have a unit in contact with a piece of central terrain to win, but this year at the end of each player’s turn you may pivot the wall. This was great because it kept his Temple guard and Stegadons from charging me at several points.

I’ve scene Nathan before at the shop and I watched part of his game with a friend of mine so I know that he is an experienced player. After looking at each other’s army we knew I was in trouble. I faced a list very similar to this about a month earlier and it did not go well for me. He had a Slann in Temple Guard and big blocks of Saurus Warriros. He had a Lore of Metal Slann Build with an Engine of the Gods and another Steggy. The Rule of Burning Iron and the 6th spell are just absolutely devastating to my knights and Warriors.

The game turned out how I expected it I tried to whittle through his Saurus, Templeguard, and Skinks while being blasted by the Lore of Metal. We were rolling ones like crazy. The game seemed to drag because were whiffing lots of attacks, but if I managed to win an important combat his Cold-blooded would pay off.

Game highlights include my Warhounds and Marauder Horsemen managing to break a unit of Kroxigors and my Lord whom single-handily nearly killed a Stegadon. I needed one more turn to kill it, but we hit the end of the sixth turn by then.

Nathan rightly got the win, but it was a close game with him having around 450 more victory points than me. We both were enjoying some beer by the end of the game so life was all good. I’m looking forward to having another crack at him.

Record: 0-3

Saturday night: Well by now I had worked up a healthy appetite (losing does that to me). We walked down the street from the hotel and got some pizza at a local joint. Several beers and half a large pizza later I staggered back to my room. We had a great dinner and I learned more than I probably needed to about the guys from our group.

Sunday: Well, today was a new day. I had gotten some sleep the night before, and was wired with caffeine and sugar.

Round 4:
Opponent (Army): Bob Kline (aka Eldar Bob) (Ogres)
Location: NW Arkansas
Ok so Bob was the Ringer army and this was only his 6th game of Fantasy ever, but he really put up a good fight. The Scenario really handicapped Ogres because it required keeping a unit in a building (and getting points for each round they keep it) which I managed to get into first. I’m effectively fighting before him with a frontage of 10 to his Unit Strength of 9 Ogres. A great moment was after I had overrun his Leadbelchers with my Frenzied Knights I realized thath I had left my rear open for his block of Gnoblars to charge me. We’re talking through the math beforehand and we figure that if I only kill 5 Gnoblars he should still win combat. After rolling dice I kill 11 Gnoblars, he doesn’t roll snakeeyes and I managed to pursue into the flank of his Ironguts.

Even though Bob lost he was in great spirits (he said that was his closest game) and we spent some time after the game talking about Fantasy and 40k. I found out that he is a Tyranid Nut and has 3 FW Tyranids and a massive bug army. Hopefully I’ll be playing him in the near future.

Record: 1-3 (one game left to go)

Sunday Lunch: We went to the Hotel Restaurant for some burgers and a breakdown of the weekend’s events. As I’m telling them about my lone win I unfortunately mention that Bob was the Ringer, it was his 6th game, and his closest game. As you can imagine I never heard the end of that.

Round 5:
Opponent (Army): Brian Jacobs (Beasts of Chaos)
Location: Republic, MO

Scenario: The last Scenario was going to be a tough one. There were two slips of paper near each deployment zone. On each piece of paper was a corresponding Secret Mission in our Tournament Book. Also there would probably be no draws. The margin of Victory was one point.

I’ve seen Brian at other tournaments before, but we’ve never played each other. Since the book is not “officially” out yet he was playing with the old Beasts of Chaos book. I would be his last opponent with the BoC book. His army was a Tzeentch themed mixed army. 3 chariots, 2 units of 4 Minotaurs, 4 spawns, 20 warhounds, 2 units of Gors/ungors, and a big block of Bestigors (with all of his characters). He had 18 PD and I was freaking out a little bit with my 2 scroll caddies and 4 DD.

This was a really great game. It was blind deployment so I had no idea where he was going to be putting the Minotaurs and Bestigors. I figured the dogs and gors would be ambushing, but when revealed we were matched up pretty evenly.

The game involved me bracing myself in the Magic phase, killing everything except for his most expensive unit (and characters), but unfortunately getting a loss (38 VPs in his favor). The loss was tied to a variety of factors. I failed my Secret Mission (worth 500 VPs). I had to keep a unit out of Deployment zone at the end of the game. When he was rolling Ambush for his Warhounds one of the units got randomly placed in the far corner of my Deployment zone. He figured he should just leave them there so that he could get the table quarter. I couldn’t reach them in time so he stopped me there. He also had Miscast once (and only once) the entire game. He had managed to wound one my Sorcerers with his Spawn. If that wouldn’t have happened then I wouldn’t have given up half points. I also forgot about my MR(2) on my Chaos Lord. As much magical damage as that unit took it would have been dramatically different if I would have remembered that, but oh well that’s on me.

In the end it was my 4th and final loss, but it was probably my most enjoyable game. It really felt like our lists were perfect for each other and we had a great time just rolling dice.

Record: 1-4

I’ll post some pics probably later today, or tomorrow. Don’t know how I placed in the end. Should know in a couple of days.

Codi Johnson of Little Rock ended up winning overall with Slaaneshi DoC. This was his 3rd Overall at Sooiepalooza and seems like a good guy. Congrats to him.

Overall it was a great tournament experience. This is my second year to go 1-4, but I really enjoyed all 5 of my games. I'm looking forward to building my army up and improving on my playing skills. In the words of Arnold, " I'll be Back".

Can I just be the first to say it is very refreshing to hear a players account of a tournament where they have not:
A) Won every single game by a Massacre
and;
B) Not played a DoC army with the Blue Scribes and Kairos Fateweaver!

Yet despite all of this you've still had an awesome time! Great report man!

Looks great, thanks for taking the time to post it up. I'm loving the scenarios and style on this thing. I'm going to have to try to make it up there next year.

Loved the hilarity of the first game. Reminds me of the time, when I one-shotted a giant, saving the unit he was about to charge. Until he fell on top of them, killed them down to <25% and they panicked. Woops.

And I have to say there are very few units that can go into the front *or* rear of a unit of frenzied chaos knights and actually help the situation. Gnoblars are not one of those units. Gorgers, however, apparently are.

Thanks again!

I was talking to one of the newer players after the tournament (whom ended up winning Rookie of the Year) and he told me about his best Giant Drama before the tournament. He was playing his Orcs and Goblins and his Giant (which was within a 1/4" of a huge unit of Big Uns) was killed by a Cannon or Bolt thrower (probably Turn 2 he said). The Giant falls over on top of his Black Orc General and Big Uns, BO Gen fails his Look Out Sir roll and is squished (along with at least 25% of his unit). They panic and flee which causes several other units to Panic. They just called the game there and started over.

As much as I like playing my Chaos Giant I found that his only redeeming act was tying up a unit of Ironguts for around 4 rounds of combat. Other than that he did not earn his points back. He'll probably be relegated to keeping the bench warm or acting as a Slave Giant in my Ogre army.

Ok just got Final Results in. I finished 37th out of 50. I got dinged on Composition (17/25), but I figured that would happen since I didn't go mono-Slaanesh and I had a Giant. I had max Sportsmanship and max painting. I was kind of bummed that I didn't get any bonus points for painting, but I didn't have a fancy display board prepared and my bases are pretty plain-jane so that will be a goal for me to work on.

Other Results (regarding people whom actually won games)
Top 3 Overall: 1st Cody Johnson (DoC), 2nd Rick Thompson (O&G ), and 3rd Greg Harris

Other Awards: Jordan Braun - Best Sportsmen, Greg Harris - Warlord, Josh Smith - Best Composition, Matt LeClair - Best Presentation, Daniel Lindley (aka Dan the Man) won Rookie of the Year. I've played against Dan in 40k and he is a great kid and an example of what we want from our up and coming players. He works really hard at converting, painting, and still is a social person.

A more infamous Award that was given is the Best/Worst General Award. This prize for somebody with great Sportsmanship, but just terrible Battle Totals. This year Hayne Begley won the award and the prize that I had won two years ago... a box of Birdmen of Catrazza. A just awful set of DoW minis that has changed hands multiple times between us Bottom Tier guys.

Interesting results: Aaron Chapman had worst Sportsmenship and near worst composition (dual Stank and War Alter list). If he would have averaged higher in both categories he would have won the whole enchilada (and decidingly at that). The final game between him and Brent Simon (as far as I know) is going to be featured in Tales of Battle. Robia Pettigrew had one of two zeros for Composition. I believe he was playing dual-Hellpit Abomination and dual-Plague Furnace (a lesson to you kiddies out there). The other guy didn't turn his list in on time so I think that is why got the zero.

Overall I think the results speak for themselves. Daemons, Skaven, and VC got hit pretty bad in composition. The highest grades in painting went to armies with lots of conversions and nice presentation. I think Dennis said that nearly half of the participants had perfect Sportsmanship.

Great report, it was my first sooie and I loved it, can't wait till next year. Wasn't planning to play this year but with the nasty weather there was an open spot and the other CAWS guys encouraged me to join in, and get the experience. Just got my lizardmen around christmas and barely had them assembled. Hope to get them completely done for bayou battles at least, if not there then for the Alamo in November.

I did take home the Birdmen of Catrazza, and instead of leaving them unassembled I think I'll paint them up and make some sort of actual "trophy" to bring back and pass on next year.

May the Dice gods bless you

Hurray for Pictures Update:

Ok finally got some pictures uploaded.

My Warriors of Chaos. Kind of cramped, but at least it's a picture.

My buddy Vince and his Ogres (with close up)

Saturday morning prior to first game

Jason Smith's Hillybilly themed Ogres. I remember seeing this army when it was still in its infancy. All of the Butchers are Females and have suitable hillbilly names (Granny, the Redhead, etc...) I think one of them is holding an Opossum.

Pics from Game 1 with Jason

Unfortunately I forgot to get a mid-game shot of Alan Kellar's Wood Elves so here is a pic of his army at least. I drank some beer at lunch so I'll blame it on that.

Again forgot to get a picture of mid-game, but this is Nathan Thrapp's Lizardmen

Game 4 versus Eldar Bob and the Ogres.

Pics from Game 5 versus Brian Jacob's and his Beasts of Chaos

Brian apparently is another person who doesn't care for the new Pumbagore models. He made his own out of Mage Knight Manbearpigs. These were Spawns in our game, but he's going to have a big unit of them once he starts playing the game.

Well that's all of the pics I got. Hope you enjoyed them.
