Subject: Best way to paint Hive Fleet Kraken? (request)

I've decided to paint my swarm in the kraken colour scheme, but I'm not sure what combination of colours and techniques to use. I do have the old 3e bug codex, and I painted one up following that guide but it doesn't really do it for me. (sorry no pics) I'm quite liking this new GW version though:
So to anyone who's painted a Kraken swarm, or knows someone who has etc, post how they achieved the colour scheme.
NB: I have the full citadel colour/wash range, and access to the vellejo range. (although vellejo are pretty much the same, yes?)

This GW guide for Kraken is a good start.

It won't give you the crisp look in the picture above, I'm no painting expert, but I guess you'll need to concentrate on bring out the bleached bone with skull white and creating a fuller red by mixing blood red with mechrite red.
I always try out new paint schemes on spare minis or the starter box of 5 termagants is ideal.

I definately want to avoid the feathering on the carapace - solid, bold red is what I want. Also, I've painted a few using the bubonic brown scheme and it's too yellow.

Here's mine
with a couple of tutorials on my website. I found a pretty fast way to paint them: http://kan.org/michael/mkp/tyranids.php

Great tabletop quality! But I'm looking for something a bit more like the DA terminator or the goblins in my gallery. (upon re-reading that it sounds a bit egotistical. Whhat I mean is that I don't mind doing manual highlights at all, even several layers if needs be) And yes, I am doing a large (read: huge) army, and yes, I know how long it will take.
But more than I am a gamer I'm a painter, so lavishing hours and hours of attention upon the swarm will hopefully not just entertain me for a long time, but have a really stunning army that will get a reputation in my locale.

I think the technique is fully scalable to those who want to highlight every joint plate and blend up the carapaces. That's what I did with my bigger bugs.

It's hard to tell. We need bigger pictures. Your heirodule is kickass too.
Also, I'd like to entirely avoid drybrushing and go for a "clean" style. You make some good points though, especially about painting scab red into the carapace recesses.
I think I'm going to go for GW ogryn flesh or gryphonne sepia for the wash on the flesh areas, and baal red on the carapace. Automatically Appended Next Post: Okay, I think I've figured it out. New thread with pics in a week.
