Subject: So...what is an FLGS for anyway?

I started playing 40K while in the middle east, where wargaming stores are non-existent. Not only has this led to alot of catching up in the social aspect of the game (wait, you don't touch other people's dice? What is that about?), but it has also left me in the dark as to the potential uses of gaming stores. There is an independant retailer about 30 minutes a way that does warhammer every Saturday, and there is GW in Halifax about an hour away (for the record, the guy who runs the independant represents all the bad parts of nerd-dom, and I avoid going there if possible).
So, aside from just buying stuff and official tournaments what are the uses of these stores? I hear people talking about going to them for games and such, but what is the etiquette around this? Are there Warstore lurkers that hang around waiting for somebody to pop in for a game? Are all of those tables set up for just anyone to use any time?
Thanks a bunch

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

People go to their FLGS because they want to play 40K. Unless you want to build your own boards, where else would you play?
Maybe I'm missing the point; it seems pretty straightforward.

FLGS is usually a game store that carries different games thus a variety of people go there.
When enough people with same interests add up , they tend to hang out there. And the store owner supply them the space to play and hang out with , and in return the customers buys from the owner.

Perhaps i can shed some light on the OP question. See i run the FLGS's Gaming Side, DnD, Shadowrun, Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, Pathfinder, Flames of War, Warmachines, Hordes. yeah, thats me. Now, My FLGS runs about 95% Warhammer 40k and Fantasy, but we see people from all walks of Nerdom in and sell them anything they need. I like to think of the store as a place you can go in, Talk with others about Lists, Games, Models, painting tips, whats better, and if you need to get an item an, a place to get that too.
Now at my store, i have 6 tables set up, afew me and a few custom built (the ice planet is my fav, i run Space wolves mostly) and they are there for -anyone- to play on -anytime- the store is open, and depending on me, even when the store is closed. its a place that i have all my armies, and a few people leave some from theirs so people can look at the paint, get inspired to paint more, or if they are running a list, and are short a lone wolf or a predator or a trygon, hey, they can borrow mine til they decide to get their own.
Its a place where all geeks, nerds, and people who get made fun of for playing with "toys" can come to feel welcome, and talk with others that know and understand what they are doing, get advice on anything they have questions of, and just have a good time...
To me, thats kinda what a FLGS is for

Self-assuredness without a grasp of the fallibility of knowledge (which is made worse by a tendancy to hold unpopular opinions for no apparent reason other than that they are in the minority. He hates Half-Life for instance), an insistance that modern technology is by defenition better for everything (I once had an argument with him about whether or not journalists should carry notebooks, or as he suggests a voice recorder, still camera, video camera and laptop. Oh, also hates journalists and loves bloggers. And I did a year at Medill for feck's sake, I do at least know something about journalism), a blatant mistrust and hatred of everybody, sight unseen. Oh yes, and rampant abusive sarcasm. And constant intellectual combativeness.
Normally I am ok with most of these things, but they are typically balanced by an understanding that the world is really complicated, that opinions should be malleable, and that most people aren't trying to screw you. He doesn't have that. Sorry, this is becoming an unessesary rant.

The FLGS want to lure you in.
By offering a friday gamenight with free boards and free cover for an hour, they inevitably become the place you go to buy 40k stuff.
It's a win-win situation.
