My friend asked me... and I wasn't too sure since I just started.

He wanted to start playing and noticed some of the cool looking HQs...

Is there a rule that states that he can only have one type of SM, in order words.... can he use Ultramarines and Salamanders together?
He wanted to use the famous HQs from each but then split up the forces down the middle...

There is nothing stopping you from using whichever characters you like, so long as they come from the same book.

You can use the special characters as is, as a combined force made up from different chapters, or you can paint them in your own chapter colours and use them as 'counts as' characters.

but if you use calgar and vulkan at the same time, calgar will be pretty useless. because all the marines lost combat tactic because of vulkan, so the calgar's god of war has not use.

please forgive my spelling, i am still learning English.

I hope Im not being too much of a jerk, but if you use more than one SC (from different Chapters especialy) is seen as pretty cheap. Just kind of a 'heads-up'.

Er why? They cost loads and you can only trade out combat tactics once. Yes you could trade out for what you want that mission but most of the time you'll be do better sticking to one strong build.

I've got to agree with Tri, its usually to your disadvantage to have two really expensive and relatively clashing HQ's. The only 2 special HQ's i've seen together consistently are Kantor and Lysander.

I'll say that it's usually a disadvantage, but I wouldn't worry about being considered "cheap." If it's a legal build, no one should give you a problem about it. There's so many Dual Lash/Nob Biker/Seer Council of Doom lists around no one could say with a straight face that you taking Vulkan and Marneus Calgar is somehow akin to cheating.

I usually see Chaplain Cassius thrown into a great many lists, because he's a great buy and doesn't clash with any other character's Chapter Tactics. Any of the other SCs are just way too expensive to take more than one IMHO.

Chaplain Cassius actually works out cheaper than a normal chaplain, which is why he is really popular, especial when added to, oh, a screaming bunch of Assault Termies

So....does all of this mean that, if I play a "fluff" army, not a Salamanders army, but using the SMCodex, I'm allowed to use Vulkan as a character in my army?

In other words (because that confused even me) can I use any SMCodex Character as an HQ choice in an un-named chapter army?

Thanks!

(Not quite sure where this belonged, sorry)

In the case of a tie, the victor will be determined by a fight to the death, using weasels.

All the HQ choices are available, yes.
You can field them with any standard SM chapter you like, made up or not, though you might get odd looks from fluffy players for some combinations.

please see page 127 "ultramarines and other chapters" boils down to this ... you can use any combination of characters, paint them how you like and even make you own models for special characters.

You could also claim to be fielding a 'crusade' army, where a bunch of different chapters will be fighting together, usually commanded by one of the Chapter Masters...

You can field any special characters together in a homemade chapter, giving them different names, that's why SM are so fun. They even say so specifically in the codex, I believe.

However, mixing up SM with those chapters that have a stand-alone codex is kind of a no-no. Even though nothing says you can't, they already have their own special rules and the special characters wouldn't give the other marines anything, apart from their glorious(?) presence.

EDIT: Forget the 2nd part. My bad. My brain melted.

...there is no rule (outside of Apocalypse games) that would allow you to select parts of your army from more than one codex.

Yeah, except for them. I was speaking more in the general sense, of just taking whatever you want from separate codexes.

but if i choose both Calgar and Vulkan or special character from other chapters. can i keep the combat tactic for my marines?

because in chapter traits rule. it say if you have XXX, then you need to exchange combat tactic with XXXX. that does not look optional to me. and Calgar does not have ability to keep the combat tactic. so literally Calgar's god of war is useless when he is with other special character from other chapters. is that right?

Unfortunately, you cannot keep Combat Tactics in this case. I recommend house ruling it that if you have at least 3 Ultramarines characters you can ignore Chapter Tactics in Apoc Games; otherwise it penalizes your whole army to use all your models.

Yep ... he's more useless then normal.
