Subject: Rebasing 3rd Edition models
|
 |
Stalwart Space Marine
|
Howdy all,
Brand new to the site, and reenetering the WH40K scene. My army is all 3rd Edition, and I have questions about making it legal.
I understand that the Terminators are now all on 40 mm bases so I will have to rebase them
How about Dreads and attack bikes? From what I gathered these have to be on 60mm bases or can they stll go without a base?
Also, are there any other base changes.
I did not see this info in the article regarding this.
Thanks,
Ted

Dreads are on 60mm, bikes have a special cavalry base; basically a rectangle.

The attack bikes, with the sidecars?

It is legal in its current state so no worries, comrade. The rulebook specifies that the models be used on the base that they were supplied with. I wouldn't sweat trying too hard to appease other naysayers who may complain about the small bases.
I guess it would sort of suck with the current bases for taking high AP templates when you have a tighter coherency though.. hm.

Okay, I guess I am confused.
I have a squad of three attack bikes that are 3rd edition. They did not come with bases. Do I need to put a base on these to make them legal, and if so what size? (60 mm round?)
Same with the dreadnought. I have a 3rd Edition metal dred that did not come with a base. Do I need to place a base on it as well and if so what size? (60 mm round?)
Lastly, I have 28 models in terminator armor. They have the 25 mm bases. I am assuming that I must rebase these to 40 mm. If my assumption is correct, I assume that I have to replace these bases, and I can not just place the old bases glued to the new ones.
If I ever play in a GW tournament again, I do want to be legal to play.
Thanks again!
Ted

the terminators should unfortunately be rebased as you'll just end up getting grief for not doing it (especially in a tourney). the rules say you're supposed to use the ones supplied with them so you *technically* ok if you have the older model sculpts on small bases. the dreads are indeed now on 60mm bases. regular bikes are on the curved ends equivalent of the fantasy cavalry bases you used to get with them so there isn't much of a change in size with that (no need to change). attack bikes according to the gw website don't come with any bases but i've seen plenty of people mount them on 60mm ones and they're a good fit. one other important change since 3rd in case you play IG is that all IG heavy weapons teams are now supposed to be on a single 60mm base (no more two guys on regular bases and a weapon in between).

Thank you Warboss for that explanation. That was precisely what I am looking for.
One more question though: When rebasing the termies, do I have to replace the base or can I legally just use glue to adhere the old basses on top of the new ones? The reason I ask is because while many of these are the etal termies and should not be a problem, some of the plastics may be very difficult to separate from the bases.

The only requirement under the current rules is that models be based on the base with which they are supplied.

Nope. They function better within the rules if they have a base, but there is no legal requirement for them to have one. In fact, technically it would be against the rules to put them on one, but nobody is going to hold you to that.
If you do base them, the 60mm is the way to go.
Same with the dreadnought. I have a 3rd Edition metal dred that did not come with a base. Do I need to place a base on it as well and if so what size? (60 mm round?)
As above. There is no real need to base them, although they work better with a base and people will give you funny looks without one.
Lastly, I have 28 models in terminator armor. They have the 25 mm bases. I am assuming that I must rebase these to 40 mm. If my assumption is correct, I assume that I have to replace these bases, and I can not just place the old bases glued to the new ones.
As the 25mm are the bases the models were supplied with, they are the legal bases for those models.
Most players won't have a problem with you rebasing them onto 40mm bases (most players from my experience prefer it, for consistency and because it looks better). And if you don't want to rip the old bases off, sticking them on top of 40mm's won't cause too many hassles... although the odd player may grumble about height advantage with LOS.

I don't think attack bikes comfortably fit on 60mm rounds, you could get some of the specialist bases companies have come out with to fill the gap, such as these. Old metal dreadnoughts I'd base even from a practicality standpoint, their center of gravity is high enough to make stopping them from tipping over a worthwhile endeavor.

Thanks all for the responses.
Just as a confirmation for anyone who may later reference this thread, I confirmed it with GW directly: no model needs to be rebased although they did recomend that I place 40 mm bases on the Terminators and a 60 mm base on the dreadnought.

Thanks for the link, been looking for a good base for my attack bikes. Kinda pricey but I'll only need a few.

I had my Red Corsair attack bikes on 60mm round bases for a while. They fit just fine. Although I can't post a pic as proof, since the sidecars have since been removed, as Corsairs made it back into the Chaos codex and so had no place for attack bikes.
