This came up in a game against a 'cron player yesterday. Basically, I had 3 units within 12" of a Monolith when it fired its Gauss flux arc, and we couldn't decide how many shots were fired.
He said that he rolled once, and all units within range were shot at that many times (e.g he rolls a five on the d6 for his number of shots, so all three of my units within range were hit 5 times.). On the other hand, I said you rolled indivually for each unit to determine the amount of shots thrown at them (e.g unit 1 could take 3 hits, unit 2 could take 6 hits, and unit 3 could take 1 hit)

So who is right?

I've always rolled for each unit....but after reading my codex again, I think it is just one roll.

Just replace the D6 in the codex with the number rolled on the table. Say he rolls a 3, then "The Flux Arc Projectors will fire 3 shots at every enemy unit..."

I've been playing that rule wrong for years.

I've always rolled a separate d6 for each unit, as has everyone I know who plays Necrons.

@Aduro

That's what I and every Necron player I know has done it as well, but am I reading the Codex wrong? The D6 is a variable that gets replaced when you roll the die. Shouldn't that then mean all units are treated equally?

You roll one time for each unit. Otherwise you might as well only roll one time and use that for the whole battle, or for all battles that particular 'lith participate in.

To OP, keep in mind that it's shots, not hits.

In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"...

I have always rolled one D6 and it fires that many shots at every unit in range. I thought that was how the rule read.

It can be qwuite a nasty weapon so i though the trade off was that you might only fire at each unit once.

never had anyone complain about playing it this way, including at the one tourney i have been to.

In the Necron Codex, under the Necron Weapons Table it states:

Gauss flux arc, Range 12", Str 5, AP 4, Heavy D6 (per target unit)

I don't understand why some people would not roll a D6 for each target unit. Hope this helps to clear up any confusion.

Cheers.

It Shouldn't have to roll to hit... But that's different matter.

You know as well as I do that if it auto hit them so many people would be up in arms saying it's BS and Necrons are cheesy. Granted I would love it to auto hit but for now, rolling to hit is what I work with.

While we're on the topic of the monolith:

What's the LOS range of the particle whip? Do I just need to draw LoS from anywhere on the crystal, or does it have to specifically be the 'open' portion. The codex isn't exactly clear.

You draw LOS and range for the Particle Whip from any one of the four guns on the corners as per the FAQ.

Meh. OT, ive always read it and played it as rolling per unit, not once and using it for all units.

Off topic, you can draw LoS from anywhere on the monolith I believe. Says in the rules i think. But I might be wrong.
