So, I finally forced myself to trudge through this horrid little paperback. I got it for 2 cents + $3.99 shipping used at Amazon, and I think I overpaid.

First off, from the title, you'd think it was about Necrons, right? I mean, it's titled "Nightbringer". Sure, it's got an Ultra Smurf on the cover, but I hardly think they'll ever release a book written from a Necron POV. Which would be awesome, but brief. I mean, have you ever seen the Necron OS source code? It's only 6 lines:

10 wake up
20 perform.check(anything alive?) If YES goto 50
30 sleep 365
40 goto 20
50 perform.kill(*) + call(monolith);
60 goto 10

But I digress. As it turns out, the book is entirely about the Ultramarines, who do not, in fact, fight the Necrons. They actually mostly fight the Dark Eldar, who are my absolute least favorite faction. The Nightbringer is actually some sort of flagship for the Nightbringer, and has a power source that does... something. The Dark Eldar want it, the Ultramarines don't want them to get it. At no point does anyone ask why the Nightbringer's flagship is also called the Nightbringer, which is a might gauche if you ask me. There are some scarabs at one brief point, who apparently eat some workers. That's it for the actual Necron appearance.

Get this book if: You thought the film "Executive Decision" was accurate in depicting Steven Seagal prominently on the poster, you like Dark Eldar
Don't get this book if: You think it's about Necrons, or enjoy a book that has a climax and a good story
My bottom line: Non-Stop poo factory

That really cracks me up! *Snort* On topic: I just read through all the volumes (400-or-so pages) of "Horus Heresy: The Collected Visions" and two things struck me:

1. A lot of text is simply double-posted. A lot of little cards and boxes and whatnot litter the pages and contain the same text you'll read in the following page. Lazy!

2. The artists are mostly non-GW regulars, and 90 percent of their work is really mediocre. As a comic book lover, I hate the fact that it's suddenly OK for illustrators to simply dish out a pencil rough and just drown it in photoshop sauce. I mean, I can actually tell what filters they've used. And the proportions are off. And, and... /sob/

GIVE ME MORE KOPINSKI, DAINTON & BOYD, NOT THIS DEVIANT ART TRASH!!!

I've never minded McNeills writing. He's a good solid author, even if he is a tad uninspiring. He sticks to the same old plot devices, and you can tell his books are just hacked out one after the other in a long chain with no particular inspiration or genius, but they're good fun reads when you've got nothing better to do, and they help expand the fluff.

And he isn't C.S. Goto.

you are wrong about necrons in the book. . . .plus you could be reading c.s. goto, well I enjoyed it
Spoiler:
they fight several necron lords along with the nightbringer, and the ship is called bringer of darkness, and the ship lets the nightbringer feed on stars much more efficiently and the dark eldar are simply helping a human try to release the nightbringer from his tomb so they get a reward+power

I actually liked the book, though I will admit I read it a long time ago. And you're wrong about the Necrons... if you bothered to read it properly you might have noticed that:

Spoiler:
They find dormant warriors in a house and in the Nightbringer's chamber

The ship is not called the Nightbringer either... Bringer of Darkness is another way of saying it I guess

Spoiler:
You must also remember that at this point the Imperium had not encountered the Nightbringer, the book is about how it got released from its tomb...

Finally:
Spoiler:
We get a nice vivid description of a naked Dark Eldar on top of a poor innocent man

Really I think you just don't like Dark Eldar?

Thought I'd give the whole 'Blogger' lark a go...
-Cadian 812th (rotting in a cupboard)
-Dark Angels 3rd Company (in disfavour, eBay?)
-Irun'Mahn (pretty and deserve love; why aren't I giving them it?)
-Draigo 'n' his Merry Band (to be continued) - How to magnetise Grey Knight strike squads' two-handed and special weapons
-The Maggot Host
Klan WurldWaagh -Are now in my first P&M blog! If you like the idea of WW2 and Orks, please take a look...

I guess I was disappointed that, from the title, I expected they would be fighting Necrons. Instead, they

Spoiler:
Found some dormant warriors, which they did not fight
and there were some
Spoiler:
scarabs, which ate a dude
and that was it.

Also, I don't remember any
Spoiler:
necron lords being in it? Just a lot of protecting that whiny governor.
I have to admit, I usually write these things right after I read them, but I actually finish the book about a week ago. Usually I devour this sort of thing in a night or two, but this took me many sessions.

Knowing this was the first encounter with the Nightbringer does indeed explain some things, but I had thought they'd, you know, fight him.

About the only thing I really did about this book was that it eventually led to this post, and I enjoyed
Spoiler:
using the spoiler tag so much in this post.
I'm probably going to
Spoiler:
abuse it, a lot, going forward.

Spoiler:
They do fight him it takes Pasanius' arm off and kills several marines!

The only thing I found ridiculous about that scene was that
Spoiler:
Uriel let it go... for no apparent reason, he just said he could destroy it (which he could) and then... didn't... do anything... Stupid Uriel

I guess that's how I feel about R.A. Salvatore. I read all the Drizzt books up until the Lone Drow, the whole time knowing that the author was a total hack but generally enjoying them anyway. The only ones I've ever re-read are the original DE trilogy, though.
