Subject: Question about base sizes

Yellin' Yoof on a Scooter
|
I have been building a nob squad for a while now. I didn't like how small the bases that came with the models were, so I used the terminator sized bases. If I remember correctly in the 4th edition there was no rule stipulating base size, but I recently read something that made me wonder if the squad I was building would be considered illegal. Is there a rule saying that you have to use the bases supplied? The 25mm bases are way too small for the nobs in my opinion, and I wanted the larger bases to make the nobs look better.
Thanks for the help

From my experience, you are supposed to use the supplied base because if you don't people will put almost everything on larger bases. If you put them on bases larger than what they were intended, then what's stopping me from putting a killa kan on a trygon base (extra large oval)? I have built over 15 nobs and think they are suited for the small bases, I had no problems at all except for the metal collector's waaagh banner one, it's a little front heavy so it tips over easily.

BRB, p3. Your models should be on the bases they come with.
If they aren't, check your opponent is okay with it - it affects assaults, unit coherency, template and blast weapons, that sort of stuff.

In 4th edition, you could swap the base for something larger. You just couldn't use a smaller base.
In 5th edition, the rule (as posted by forkbanger) is a little more strict, and requires the model to be on the base with which it is supplied. Anything else requires opponent's permission.
That being said, you'll find that very few people will even notice that they're on different bases, let alone care.

I'd have no problem with it, though people in tournaments might get a bit bugged by it.

Nobody is 'in the wrong'
You're perfectly within your rights to modify your bases. The rules even say that you can. You simply need your opponent's permission to use them in a game against them.

Exactly. If the opponent refuses, as he is permitted to, the opponent is the one who is technically correct. I was just trying to point out that if he DOES come across someone who does care about the size, the opponent is well able to refuse to allow you the use of those models.

About what?
If you asked for your opponent's permission, and they said no, you're both 'correct'... in that you both followed the rules.
You seem intent on making people think that altering their bases is in some way wrong, which is simply not the case.

Well, of course they are. That's kind of inherent in the idea of requiring your opponent's permission.

The pics of my nobs are now up in painting and modeling. One of the reasons I have been using the larger bases is that I have a limited edition gamesday model that I waned to put in the squad as well. He came with a grot and as he has his arms crossed there is no possibility of putting a weapon in his hand. I am using the larger base to put both the grot and a big choppa that will be stuck in the ground.
I know there is always some guy looking for an advantage and that is why they changed the comment in the 5th edition. I just think it is rediculously petty that some people would change base size for some kind of advantage. I just did it from a pure modeling standpoint. The problem is that I do want to play in tournaments... this is just really frustrating.

The problem is that I do want to play in tournaments... this is just really frustrating. I like the pictures you posted, especially the games-day model. I agree that nobs look better on bigger bases as they are much bigger than the puny boyz and this is displayed with lootas as well because the entire model over hangs the 1in base, it just doesn't look right. Regardless to avoid the headache of not being able to play someone because they won't let you use larger bases or not being able to play in tournaments, I would put them on their supplied bases. Also if you had a 10 man nob squad in a trukk all equipped with large bases...it would be incredibly hard to keep unit coherency.

I guess it will be ok as the games day model comes with the larger base. To me it is strange having a few different base sizes in a squad, but if those are the rules... I just wanted everything on the same size base. Oh wells. They are still being worked on, it shouldn't be too much trouble to get the bases off.

I've only ever done one tournament: 120 players, accompanied with 5 friends. None of us met an opponent during the 5 rounds of the tournament who would object to minor stuff like this, especially if you make sure they look cool.
That being said, it might be different if you are competing for top spots (I wouldn't know, sadly ^^) as a 40mm base for a CC unit can be a (small) adavantage.
