I not sure if I am posting this in the correct area but here is my question. Has anyone made a witch elf army(using Crone) and how well did it play.

No.

Never seen it.

Probably badly as the Which elves are pretty much the worst value special selection available.

Do you have any particular reasoning for that statement?
They're paper thin, but with enough target saturation and used in small units they seem like they can be a sledgehammer with their volume of attacks

Oh, no, the Witches are not even close for worst special choice. That disticntion goes to Executioners, who (despite a fantastic mini) suck hardcore. Sure, they strike with S6. They use great weapons, which always strike last. On T3, Armor save 5+ models, that means you only get one round of combat with them - the round you charge. The rest of the time the battle line will be swept by... whatever it was you needed S6 to deal with in the first place.

Sure, you can use the Banner of Hag Graef to give them ASF, but you can't do it the easy way - by giving the banner to the unit standard bearer - because it costs too much. You have to give it to your BSB to carry, preventing her from taking one of the other options.

Her? Well, you see, the Executioners are Khainites - devout worshipers of the Dark Elf god of murder. No Master will trust them enough to join their unit. So... you have to use a more expensive, unarmored Death Hag. By the way... she has Frenzy too, so she can be baited out of the unit.

I'll grant you that one large unit of Witches is going to have a hard time. Several small units - especially when backed up by Hydras and characters on monsters - will draw little fire. Then they hit the battleline and go through rank & file like a chainsaw.

The problem with Hellebrone is that she is a massively expensive character on an expensive monster... with no armor saves at all. Anything with high-strength ranged attacks (or worse, ranged poison!) will cut her down in a volley, two at most.

Executioners are better than witches...No frenzy, and some armor, plus killing blow (Which you don't have to use great weapons for), higher strength, and higher WS.

In the Webway.

Vulcan, Hellebron doesn't have a mount.

And she's awesome in CC, just don't get her shot. I was thinking of including her as my Lord choice but decided against it, mainly because i was going to buy 20 witch elves to be her retinue, but that would be quite expensive (in real life money).

I might include her later on in the army though.

Whoop!. I forgot they changed her in the new book. Now the manticore is an option, not a require. My bad!

Hmmm. Using Executioners with just their hand weapons, rather than great weapons? Interresant. Killing blow still makes them somewhat dangerous, and not having to wait 'til last to go might make a big difference. I'll have to play around with that and see what happens.

I know that when a unit of Witches hits a typical Core R&F unit things get... messy. And they really only need a unit just big enough to present a frontage of 5-7 when they hit - SCR is pretty much irrelevant for Witches, they win by generating kills.

Vulcan, way to point out all the downsides to ASF executioners. I was going to say that another downside is, because that unit is so obviously not something you want to fight, that nobody does. Same goes for putting Hellebron into a unit with an ASF-ing BSB - you simply don't let it contact you. Says the guy who accidentally let it mince his ogre gutstar in the one tournament he fought it ...

I really like witches myself, and I think fielded in 7-10 chick units as mass MSU core, backed up by cauldron(s) to make them stubborn and beef them up, has some possibility. Frankly, I'm just waiting for plastic witches to come out (and to be hot) before I throw into a full khaine army led by Ms. S10 herself. Thankfully I may have a bit of a wait until DE Wave 2/3 hits

That's a thought....

Hellebron and some witches as a distraction unit... "HERE is the real threat. Just ignore these hydras going around the sides, HERE is the threat you need to worry about..."
