Okay, here's the challenge: make a (good) wood elf list for 1999 points. Can you do it?

One Condition!!!! You have to only include models that I (or you, if you play wood elves) have available! No cheating

I'll have available:
2 Treeman
8 Treekin
12 Wild Riders
10 War Dancers
40 Dryads
2 Spellsingers
And for the sake of argument, 2 Nobles (equip how you like... yes, I know I'm breaking my one condition already!)

I'm having trouble because with only 3 special slots, 1 rare, and no lords... it's hard to make the points get up to almost 2000. I'd have to have at least 2 more core units available to do it... so unless one of you sees otherwise, there'll be no 1999 games for me! Has anyone else run into this problem?

Hmm, that is a tough one.

5 units of 8 Dryads,

2 units of 6 wild riders with command

2 spell caddies

1 treeman

10 wardancers with command

Alter kindred noble

1 Wardancer noble maybe, or make the spellsinger a spellweaver and take another alter kindred.

I do play WE so I'll use my own stuff, which kinda matches up with your own gear.

Scroll Caddy
Standard Alter Noble (HoDa, HotH, GW, la, sh)
Branchwraith w/ Cluster

I am a huge fan of magic defense, because MM kill all our stuff so well, not to mention the better spells out there. If I don't do a TMA I take a BW w/ Cluster every time.

You have to take your Dryads, but I can't stress how important a mix of WE core is, IMO we have some of the best core choices (scouts aside) and you can't go wrong with just taking 2 of each unit, (GG, GR and Dry) or maybe 3 Dry, 2 GG and 1 GR.

I love Treekin, but I don't use them as a standard hammer unit, they have trouble breaking ranked blocks. I use them as dominate flankers. They outclass most everything that most people use to hold their battleline's flanks, and if ignored, can run rampant in the middle of the field if they get flank charges.

6 WR with warbanner is a top notch selection.

I would stick with the treeman, he's lost so much ground, but still can't go wrong with him.

Good ideas... I was just running this through the numbers again and I still can't get up to 1999...

Dainty Twerp- I'm trying to go for a Forest Spirit theme, so right now I'm staying away from the glade guard. I'm not saying that can't change if I find I can't win any games, though

Also, why do people take a Branchwraith just to get the cluster? It seems pretty expensive... you could almost have a "real" wizard for that price. I guess you're getting two dispel dice if you upgrade, but still...

Edit: What about this?

Noble, Wild Rider Kindred, Great Stag, Moonstone of the Hidden Ways- 195
Spellsinger, Level 2, Divination Orb, Scroll- 175
Spellsinger, Level 2, Calaingor's Stave, Scroll- 175

10 Dryads- 120
10 Dryads- 120
10 Dryads- 120
10 Dryads- 120

8 Wardancers, Musician- 151
8 Wild Riders, Full Command, War Banner- 269
4 Treekin- 260

Treeman- 285

Total- 1990

I want to stay away from the Alter kindred since it's pretty common... also, this wouldn't be a super-competitive list (obviously ). I believe the Noble on Great Stag would displace 2 wild riders in the unit, so they would get a rank bonus? He would warp them somewhere else... and try to hit the flank of the other army.

A Character joining a unit counts as a single model for determining Rank Bonus. Base size has nothing to do with it. Only Characters that have a specific Special Rule (like the Slann Mage Priest) can take up more then a single spot.

Also, Wild Riders will never get a Rank Bonus as they are Fast Cavalry.

How about this?

1 Alter Noble, GW, LA, Shield, Helm of Hunt, Hail of Doom Arrow @ 158
1 Spellsinger, L2, Stave, Scroll @ 175
1 Spellsinger, L2, Scroll, Scroll @ 175

5 x 8 Dryads @ 480

2 x 4 Treekin @ 520
6 Wild Riders, Standard, Warbanner @ 199

1 Treeman @ 285

/1992 points, 58 models

Ah, good catch... thanks Airmaniac. I guess they could always re-form into a line after they "teleport"... Hmm...

That looks like a really good one, Daba! I've tried the one Reecius posted and I can't get it up to 1999... so you win the prize Which is, um, my thanks...

My only critique is that you don't need to make the spellsingers lv2, you could use the points elsewhere, but that is just me. I find that WE offensive magic is pretty much wasted points, but that is because of the meta here.

I will have to try the treekin, Dainty Twerp's idea of using them as flankers is a good idea.

I will have to double check my models, but I am sure I have this list.

Noble
wild rider, stag, oaken armor = 210

Noble
alter, helm of the hunt, hail of doom arrow, GW, LA = 156

Spellsinger
2x dispel scroll, elven steed = 152

2x5 glade riders w/ musicians = 258
3x10 glade guard = 360
3x8 dryads = 288 plus on dryad = 300

2x5 wild riders w/ musicians = 260 plus one wild hunter = 278
3x warhawk riders = 120
8x wardancers w/ command = 165

total = 1999

Not really sure how well it would do, but it is fast and shooty. The glade riders are more for redirecting charges so my wild riders can flank charge. At least that is my theory. The warhawk riders are for march blocking, redirecting, and hunting. The glade guard provide the shade. The dryads provide the screen and the wardancers flank charge everything else.

Is that a '300' reference?

You've got 4 special slots taken! That's been my problem...! You can only have 3 at 1999

yes it was.

Good catch on the 4 specials. I was just modifying my 2k list.

I guess I would drop a unit of wild riders, one dryad, and the bladesinger for a treeman. I think that would be 1998.

Alright, is it alright for me to substitute one of my warhawks as a war eagle? Or do I actually need the war eagle model? If not, this is what I can do. (my treeman is the old version, so I avoid it)

I thought it was legal to sub a special unit in a rare slot. That would make the 4 special list legal b/c there isn't a rare there.

btw: Am I the only one who loves the glade guard. If used properly you can shoot the crap out of most opponents before they get to you. This takes march blocking and planning ahead of time.

I've heard that glade guard are really effective! However, they don't fit my army theme (mostly forest spirit) so that's the reason I didn't include them in my list.

I've never heard of swapping a special into a rare slot. It's certainly possible, though!

Is that special for a rare an actual rule or a house rule? I think I have heard it before, but don't have any way to reference it.

And yes, I love glade guard too. I take them in every list, granted they stand out in my dwarf army.
