hey guys. I'm wanting to get into 40k and I've chosen my army but I don't have a lot of money. I can afford a 500pt army but I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions for someone on a budget.
figured I should add i've chosen Witch Hunters. Does anyone know if they are getting another Codex soon?

Witch Hunters are quite frankly not the army you want if you are on a budget.

Witch hunters is a great army, a bit outdated but great. However they are on of the most expensive armys $$ wise.

what would you suggest? I like the fluff behind Witch Hunters, Imperial Guard and Space Wolves the most.

yeah I noticed that when i was on the GW website. I can afford ~$250 or so including the essentials (codex, templates, rulebook, paints) I know I can get the acrylic paints from wal-mart for very cheap and that those apparently work very well if you are on a budget.
I keep forgetting to add things. my friend, who has been playing for ages, gave me his old Witch Hunters Codex and a older (don't know what edition) Space Marines Codex. I got a friend who used to play Space Wolves a few years back and I've been trying to get a hold on him so I can try and take his stuff off his hands.
also how can you tell what edition a codex is? I haven't noticed a label on the books telling me which edition they are.
and again. thanks for the help guys

Out of the three you've listed, Spacewolves seems the way to go. They'll be easiest on your wallet, since they won't require as many models as IG, and on a per model basis are cheaper than Whitch Hunters.

thanks. i can't wait to get a army going. my friend has been letting me borrow the codex and I've actually already got 2 SW armies built on paper.

Marine armies of any sort are "budget friendly". Low model count, most things in plastic and unless you are planning a GD entry you can get buy with like 4-5 different colors of paint.
IG and Orks will rape your wallet. Eldar wouldn't be bad either on a budget as your basic building block should either be Avengers, Guardians, Jetbikes or Rangers. Jetbikes are pricy though so Bike heavy army will break the bank.
But yeah, Marines for people on a budget.

Since you'll be down to about $160-$170 after rulebooks and templates I'd suggest starting Space Wolves. You can get two battleforce box's for $180. That will give you 40 marines, 10 scouts, and two drop pods. More than enough to get you started with 40k.
Besides, with you just beginning the game using one of the marine codex's is that way to go. They'll allow you to make a few mistakes while still being effective.

You could even skip the rulebook if you have a good grasp of the rules. I myself never plan to buy the BGB until future editions come out, since I didn't get into the game until I had a very firm grasp on how to play. Skipping the book can save you a good 60 bucks on something you don't absolutely need to play at a FLGS or with friends.
And yes, Wolves are your best bet if those are your top three. They're in 5th Edition (Witch Hunters are still stuck in 3rd) and being a marine army, are fairly cheap money-wise to buy a good sized force. My advice? Don't buy anything until you have a rough idea of how you want your army to evolve. Don't bother buying models you'll never use - buy the things you know you'll use the most.

Hi! The product code for the latest "Witch Hunters" is 60 03 01 08 05 and the ISBN is 1-84154-485-X. You know, I don't have the space marine codex but in the Witch Hunter book it says Witch Hunters can ally to Space Marines. I've never done that, but why not look into it? That way you can get a nice Space Marine army for cheap and gradually collect Witch Hunters at an affordable pace until you have another army
I think it's great that you are planning for smaller games first, it takes a lot of pressure off. Gosh I remember the days I used to have 2000 pt unpainted armies, and didn't want to play until they were all done. Months of painting with no gaming sure can dampen the enthusiasm! 500 pts is a very good start!
Emperor bless and keep you!

Space Marines and Orks are the cheapest because of Assault on Black Reach. All you'll need to get would be the codex and another troop squad if you want to use the Space Marines. Plus you can add in the Witch Hunters as you go along using their ally rule. Eventually you will probably have a Witch Hunters army that's playable on it's own.

Yeah, black reach is the way to go. You can sell the orks that you don't need and be able to get most of your money back, or you could go halves with someone. All you need to do is pain them space wolves colours and add a few SW bits, e.g wolf pelts. My uncle has done a good gob of SW-ifying the black reach marines. He used a few heads from the SW kit (that kit has about 50 heads so you shouldnt run out) and wolf pelts. I think he also used a few bits packs.
So basically, if you go halves on AoBR you get around 500pts of stuff for £25 quid (sorry don't know what this is in $). All you need then is a SW kit. I'd make these into blood claws and you can use the heads, pelts etc to SW-ifiy them.
This gives you: a wolf lord (probably what you'd make the captain in to) 10 blood claws, 10 grey hunters, 5 wolf guard (probably what you'd make the termies) and a dread, for only £45 (minus the books, paints etc). Then i'd get a rhino after that if you can.
