I just got into Warhammer like a month ago, and I'm looking for some advice on where to go with my army. I would like it to be more shoot than assault, and I'd like to have as balanced a force as possible. Here's what I have so far.
10 man tactical squad
Dreadnought
Captain
5 Terminators
All of that stuff is from AOBR if that makes any difference. I've also recently added:
5 man assault squad
5 man scout squad w/ sniper rifles.
and I have 2 more 10 man tactical squads, a dreadnought, and a predator on their way in the mail.
My question is, where to go from here? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

well it seems like you're going with a vanilla force with an emphasis in armor. . . so i'd start loading up on razorbacks and Land Raiders to get your guys up on wheels.
Vindicators are always great. They're even better because they're very self explanatory "point, shoot, hug cover, repeat" and they're SCARY so they soak up lots of firepower.
Razorbacks are also great. Depending on how you kit them out they can become anti med tank, anti infantry, er a short range anti-infantry/anti light tank monster. They're fragile though, so unless you spam them, don't expect them to be your work horse as far as firepower goes. They are howeer great for depositing marines on objectives and then sitting back and providing support/mobile cover.

I would say where you go from there is put it together and paint it and play lots of games so you know how good it does in games. I'd proxy the dreadnought as a twin auto cannon dreadnought. I'd Leave off one of the arms on the terminators to proxy it as an assault cannon. I'd take the tacticals on the way and probably do missile launcher and melta. Split them into combat squads and move them that way. After that I'd do transports for your units to make them more mobile. Drop pod for the dreadnought with the multi melta. Rhinos for at least one of the tacticals. Razorback for one or two. Vindicator, like was suggested. Focus on the heavy support, troops and hq at the moment. Assault units are more complex to figure out. Fun to use, but not as easy for beginners.

It looks like you've put together a well-balanced collection of units. Much smarter choices than when I began playing SM. anyway, it sounds like you eventually are going to want to get another predator, so you can field two along with your pair of dreads. I would also buy 5 more assault marines and 5 more sniper rifle scouts having those 10 man squads will really give your army some real power. Also, it would be a good idea to buy 3 rhinos or drop pods for your tactical marines, you won't always have to field them, but they are good to have in case you need them.
good luck with your marines in the future.

I highly recommend you magnetize your Predators so you can configure them anyway you want and use them as Rhinos if needed. I believe there's an article on this site on how to do it somewhere
if not here's a link to the page I used to do mine http://apnu.runswithscissors.com/convertible-predator-howto.html

This is very good start indeed.
I think dreadnoughts, if not shooty, need a droppod nowdays or they will be popped before doing anything big. I would suggest making your second dreadnought shooty with LC and ML and give AOBR one heavy flamer instead of stormbolter and droppod him.
I wouldnt use those terminators because they dont really do anything that special for their cost. If termies assault ones or 10 squad with two heavy weapons deepstriking is the way to go.
Bring up assault squad to 10 with powerfist and two flamers. They will be your countercharge unit.
Your marines need transport as suggested. If you want to go more shooty go for 3 razorbacks and magnetize them. I would also recommend a box of devastators here to have some heavy weapon diversity to swap them around tac squads. I like meltagun/flamer + lascannnon/multimelta tacticals with powerfist for flamer sarge and combiweapon of same type as squads special weapon (combiflamer for flamer squad etc..) Combat squad rule is your best frined here
Maginetising the predator would be very good. As it goes along you seem to be quite light on antitank so you would maybe have the predator used with lascannons but thats very expensive so you have to hide it well.. or get second one. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and.. i would go libby or jumppack chaplain instead of captain for various reasons of captain not doing anything..

I have found an excellent use for the AoBR dread: MM/DCCW +heavy flamer. When used in a mechanized list, it adds to target saturation. Running 2 of them along side speeders means you have great redundancy in the MM/HF vehicles. This dread setup is for supporting an assault, so best compliments a main assault unit. The drop pod is not needed as you are trying to take focus off of your landspeeders as you pop smoke and run forward on turn 1 to keep up with your mobile assault unit.
A dread with TL LC and ML runs 145 points. For 120 points, you can get a predator with autocannon and 2 lascannons. The weaponry is comparable, while the predator is 25 points cheaper. That's not the whole story, but its reason enough for me to take the 120 point predator every time over my very old las/ml model.
Landspeeders are amongst the best weapon platforms available to marines. Both Heavy flamer/multimelta and typhoon missile/heavy bolter variants are popular due to their great effectiveness. The former being a good suicide unit that will often make back its points easily. The latter is your mobile long range unit which marginalizes the low Armor by trying to out-range weapons which pose it a threat.
So landspeeders, rhinos, razorbacks for a mechanized list. If you want to go footslogging, drop pods will be what you are looking for next.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I will be adding 5 more Assault and 5 more Snipers, a Dev squad, and I'm in the process of purchasing two rhinos from a friend of mine. The predator I have coming is assembled and magnetized, and I should also have some termie bitz coming my way as well, hopefully I can make good use of them. Got my first game coming up on thursday, so I'll fill everyone in on how it goes. Thanks again guys!
