Hi all.

does the gretchin cover save of 4+ apply to ALL units they are in front of, or only those that are covered half way up, like boyz for example?

I mean, will Nobz, Stormboyz (rockit pack adds height but they are still boys.....), Deff Dread, etc etc be covered?

cheers for any clarification lads.

Cheers, Roy.

Orks: 2200 points and counting.

Cover saves are generally 4+, with any portion of the model being obscured from LOS to grant it. However some larger models (vehicles and MC's) require the model to be at least 50% covered before the cover save can be applied.

Assuming you mean the cover save ANY unit receives for being obscured, then yes, it applies to all units they are in front of as long as the Firing Units Line of Sight passes through the Gretchin unit.

Vehicles and Monstrous creatures must be at least 50% covered in order to receive a save, which is an exception to the general rule.

Read pages 21-23 and 62 in the main rulebook, they should clear up most confusion. Note that walkers like Dreads are still vehicles.
If you've still got any specific questions, then I'm sure we can help you figure it out.

Remember that cover saves work both ways. If you shoot through your own gretchin by a different unit, it gives your enemies the cover save.

Yes, but if your orks are close enough and tall enough to shoot *over* the gretchin unit then the opponent will not receive a cover save.

for orks it gives them more pro than con. they general have less SV then other race. for example. if there are grethcins stay between boyz and SM. boyz can take 4+Csv against bolter instead of non saving at all. but SM are still taking 3+sv against ork weapon.

please forgive my spelling, i am still learning English.

Remember that whether or not your target is obscured is based entirely on LoS.

It is very possible (likely even) for the grots to be close enough to the orks that the orks can fire without giving their opponent cover saves, but the orks still receive cover saves from the grots.

There is no rule stating that cover saves "work both ways" 100% of the time.

Which makes sense. A man in the open firing at a man in a fixed fortification isn't afforded the same protection!

also remember that in a few situations, since the gretchen are so small, that a weapon firing from the top of a land raider, or a dread (or similar large vehicle) MAY be able to see completely over the gretchen as well. *edited for wrongness*

Obscured bases do not grant a cover save. Part of the model's body (as defined on page 16) has to be obscured.

Thank you, insaniak. I am appalled at how LoS rules are still so thoroughly misunderstood so often...
