Hey all question here. I always see wood elf models creep up with tree trunk bases and what not. Does anyone know where I can get these or how to make them?

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I don't know where to get them, but you can make them relatively easily just using a bit of GS. Just scuplt it either as a solid lump, or over the end of a pen lid (the square ended kind) or something. Make the roots rooty, and then carve in some rings to the top.

Another way you could do it would be to roll up a strip of paper into a cylinder to give you the rings of the tree on top. Then wrap or stick on some jagged edged pieces around the edge to simulate a the bark left when a tree has fallen over , then GS in the roots and/or external bark patterns.

If you want premade bases, Back 2 Base-ix and Microarts both have good forest bases that would match quite well to the wood elf range.

Also, if you buy a bag of Woodlend Scenics tree armatures, you can make tons of logs, branches, etc. for bases.

You could also just step outside, go to the base of almost any tree and look around for fallen branches etc. Dried, older twigs work best as the bark will not decide to fall off later. Trim to fit the bases and your good to go. I would personally suggest Oak for Wood Elves, as the bark will curl around defects and swell to look like stumps.

I've used bits of pine cone for scenic terrain, and was very disappointed by the results. I just couldn't get it to stay put... it didn't help that I did not prime/paint it, but left it natural- so it looked "too" real compared with everything else!

I also have a model with a large real rock on its base. It was OK at first... but now that the rock is painted to look like a rock (funny about that...) it actually blends in and looks a LOT better!

Just figured I'd share in case you decide to go the "natural" route... it's not as easy as it looks! I think it's actually easier to use the "fake" stuff... at least if you want it to blend in with everything else . Especially if you're using twigs, I would think you would need to prime/paint it to get it to fit in well. I'm not sure if something like that will take the paint well, though...
