Any character I name has a Y in it following a somewhat similar theme to my SN. For example:

Axyl
Malfryd
Ivyn

Not sure how I picked up that habit, but I've been doing it for awhile.

My name since it's Slavic would be pronounced something like E van,but you aren't Slavic so you might not pronounce it.

My paladin is named after a paladin. I try to find literary characters whose name I find appealing and who I think reflects the character well.

I had a HE paladin on Everquest named Rolannd Deschaine (Sic), after Stephen King's Dark Tower novels--this name had to be changed after a server transfer to Cuthbert Allgood (another King character).

I also had a Dwarf Pally on wow named Agravaine, after the knights of the round table

I operate on whim alone. Some of my better ones have been: a dwarf named Keg and a retribution paladin named Hoar (got a lot of PMs about that one. Apparently no one remembers the Forgotten Realms god of revenge).

A mixture of literary allusions and bad puns merged with the style of the game. I have a Lord of the Rings Minstrel named Celloborn, a champion named VonKaiserstein and so on and so forth. Whim, as much as anything, determines their names.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

Depends on the game, some are semi-serious, some are jokey.

I used to make up random stuff, and although that means one or two of my alts are unique when you search on the Armoury, I also often look at obscure naming websites to find regional names that fit.

Plus in WoW it tends to become harder to name alts the older the server is. Most of the first names you would think off are long gone.

Probably why I like my alt Annmarie as its obviously a name you had to take in the first few weeks of the place being active.

Some of my WoW names inc..

Shaedrah - My Main Draenei Hunter (wanted something that sounded slightly russian, so just made it up.)

Katrana - her sister and Shammie (Just grabbed a russian name, plus its another name that shows how old the alt is, even if she spent two years below lvl 30.)

Annmarie - my Holy Priest (first alt I made on Ghostlands, two weeks after the server had launched. Can't fully remember why I picked the name, got a feeling it was because I was going with a french style character, as my wife had taken Belle. She later dumped the Pali, but never retained the name, I'm sure a year in, someone was quite stunned to get Belle.)

Foxblossom - my Gnome Warrior, as she has red hair.

Nymphia - was a Druid, (not an attempt at trying to be Kinky, but was trying to find something based around female and nature not already taken a year and a half in. When I deleated her to make room for a Deathknight, I thought it would be cool to say she was the one falling to the Scourge, so my new DeathKnight took the same name.

Brokenreason, my Orc Rogue and first ever character, I took the name as I'd pretty much stayed clear from WoW for the first year and a bit of its life, and it was a play on 'I must be crazy for trying it,' that fateful Christmas week because my mate brought me a TCG box which had a 10day free trial in it. I've moved her seven times (only free the once) across diff realms, as I refuse to delete her. The stupid thing is she's not even high lvl, I just like the name and the first alt status, 62 I think she is atm.

In WaR I went for Blood Bowl names for some reason, fortuntely my main Destruction where on one the two remaining servers, but I lost all the Order ones when I transfered them to the other server and lost some Destruction ones.

My main Destruction guy is a Druchii Disciple called Meriann Lightning. Although I haven't played him in months.

Ones I lost included Griff, Valen, Dirty, Garbage, Jurgen, had I got them to twenty, obviously they would have been Griff Oberwald, Valen Swift, Dirty Dan, Garbage Throttlesnot and Jurgen Demonfeeder.

In CoX and Champions I just went looking for vague/not so vague references to their power sets as you would expect.

Characters examples inc, Tempestra (lightning/weather,) Dragongirl (Wings, Strength, with scale pattern) and Krakatau (Fire powers, strength.)

So yeah, bit of a mixed bag really. Try not to spend to long over the process mind you, and naming sites are a great way to find interesting names, especially if you go after the not so common countries such as the Balkans, Arabic names, ancient style names etc.

Sometimes other names backwards, sometimes other names backwards then slightly modified, sometimes the name comes first, then I make the character, sometimes I spend ages agonising over finding exactly the right name for a character concept, and can't play the character until I do.

My most developed character was Kered Rose. Kered being Derek backwards, and the surname taking a week or more to think of. I tried Kered Black, Kered White, Kered Tower, Kered on its own... I thought of Rose in the shower one day and I made the character online 20 minutes later. He was an elf-hating politcian character inspired by the speeches of Hitler, Enoch Powell, and the guy with the funny lip from American History X.

Other names of characters I have played a lot -

Laen Toille - trader
Shaktar Shasseugh - lizardman murderous brute fighter
Selwonk Sirch - gnome scholar
Father Sigh - priest of a god of fear
Reese Kord - bounty hunter
Ezra Uyche - Orc soothsayer with no tongue who communicated via her familiar, a crow.

Oh, and one of my favouries - Slits. He was inspired by Sgt. Hakeswill from Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe books, Gasherman from Stephen King's Dark Tower, Black Blood, from Pat Mills' ABC Warriors, from the comic 2000AD and various other unpleasant characters.

I made a name I liked a looooong time ago when I played Ultima Online and just kept it. Oglack. All of my other characters tend to be variations or nicknames that came because of that.

The greater good needs some moo.
