2 questions guys. I just sold my 40k and fantasy armies to pay for my vacation to vegas, and because I just didnt have room for everything. Is LotR/WotR cheaper (as far as GW stuff goes)? So far WotR looks ALOT cheaper then 40k and fantasy. And do the sets of stuff like the fellowship come as metal or plastic? because theres no way in Im paying $50 for plastic. Thank you for your time Dakka

Depends.

My unit of Durin's Guard is really expensive. Almost as expensive as a unit of blood knights for WHFB. The command formation cost me $40 for the khazad guard unit, $20 for Durin and Murin, $15 for a standard bearer and then I had to convert a model to be used as a musician. $75 for 8 dwarf models (actually 14 models but only those 8 get used in the formation tray).

That is one extreme of the pricing spectrum though. I think that for most armies with the exception of a few choice meta models that comprise a unit, that you can get a 2000 point WotR army for less than $300. In comparison, its a fair bit cheaper than 40K or WHFB in some ways, but in others it can get pricey. It really just depends on what you want in your army. If its mostly plastic, then you have a cheap army. If you want an army comprised of all metal moria goblins, you are not only rich but insane.

I don't think it is cheaper. I'll give you an example. I picked up a box of Mordor Orcs and thought this was a steal considering the fact that I got my hands on 24 for something like $25. But after assembling these, I found out that only 4 had bows and the weapons on all these guys were different (ie some had 2-handed weapons, some had sword and shield).

In other words, if I wanted to field a unit with bows, I'd need to buy yet another box minimum.

I don't think that's terrible - you would want more than a box anyway - but point is, it isn't really cheap.

WotR is FAR CHEAPER than Fantasy and 40K. I put together a 2000pt Elf list for $200 plus tax at retail value. Its completly legal and Tournament ready. My 1500 Tournament Mordor army cost me around $200 cuase i have to have the shown models as is. The mordor boxes comes with hand weapons w/ shields, 2 hand weapons and bows. you can mix and match them just put the main weapons of the unit up front and call it like that. if your opponent says anything tell them to shut up and relax and its a game.

A moment of laxity spawns a lifetime of heresy.

For the most part, I agree. Plasticinfantry average about $1 per model. Compare that to 40K of WHFB.

But as in my example above it can get pricey. It averages out about the same to buy a WotR army as it does a 40K or WHFB army (perhaps slightly cheaper dependig on what you buy) after you purchase the other stuff you need for the army. (monsters, metal units, etc)

I think the argument about having to buy multiple boxes is not the issue. Its a formation based game like WHFB so youre going to need multiple boxes. People feel gyped by having to buy multiple boxes because they are so used to the WHFB formula of infantry.

While I agree that it sucks to buy 3 boxes in order to make a decent formation, you also get three different formations from those three boxes. (typically 8 bows, 8 swords and shields, 8 two handed weapons of some variety in each box).

There are as always exceptions to this rule.

On the cheap end, we have elves the majority of which can be bought in plastic and after including a couple metal epic heroes, a 2000+ point army will cost only roughly $150. A solid army too, not some schmuck army you give to a newb just so you can beat his ass when he plays against you.

On the more expensive end is the curious infantry distribution inside the Easterlings box which only give you 4 spearmen. Arguably the most useful model in that box. Now THIS would be expensive to make a formation of 24 models from, for sure @ roughly $170. And thats for plastic models....

Point is, its as expensive as you want to make it.

And I suppose one could say it is more expensive if you want to play high-point games. So if you and your opponent are willing to play smaller games, you can have a small potent force and enjoy a game now and then with that.

I imagine LOTR is cheaper since you might not need whole armies to play it. I still maintain that the Mines of Moria boxed set is a great deal with enough fun to last a lifetime, especially if you treat it like a boardgame rather than an expandable game.

If you do expand with LOTR, well, it costs a little more as you add new models to the collection. I think the ideal here would be to collect with friends and then combine your collections in order to run the various scenarios.

WotR is GW's way of selling lots of LotR stuff, as it is cheap. You will pay A LOT less if you just want to play LotR SBG, but WotR can be as expensive as a 40k army.

as far as i have seen the lotr plastic boxes are quite a bit cheaper than the 40k/whfb boxes...

that being said, a lot of the models suck in comparison...

after going through and figuring out a 2000 pt list, I think I might have exaggerated about the cost, but only slightly. Especially if you use online discounters.

If you're looking to do Galadhrim, then it will be pretty cheap. The other wood elves are fairly cheap but they only have one box to choose from where galadhrim have two.

For a 2000 WotR army, a decent list would be:
2 boxes of Galadhrim Knights = $66
(6 companies in 2 formations, 1 captain 1 banner each formation) = 470pts.

4 Boxes of Galadhrim Warriors $132
(8 companies of glaives & shields in 4 formations, 1 captain 1 banner each formation) = 740pts
(4 companies of archers in 2 formations) = 200pts

Gil-Galad & Elrond = $20
(Gil-Galad is a beat stick and stupid good) = 300pts
(Elrond is the master healer of both might points and models in units. He is there to move around the baord unit to unit doing his job) = 215pts
Total = 1925 pts.

Gives you enough to use some hornblowers if you feel you need the extra inch of movement (not recommended but can be useful if you have the points to spare) or throw in another epic hero such as Haldir or Cirdan to make it a perfect 2k pt list.

Total cost = $218 or $175 after 20% discount if you use an online source. A few bucks more if you add in one more epic hero recommended above.

Overall though, its a steady list and in comparison to other games (and other armies for WotR) its a fairly cheep army to build. All because the army is almost entirely plastic. Learning curve is a bit steep, but gil-galad helps a lot with that as he is a point and click monster in a good CC formation.

As a counter point example, my Misty Mountain Wargs have cost me more than that so far and all I have is about 500 points to show for it.

Sorry,but...Are you stupid? You sold your stuff to pay for vegas? That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. I could understand if it was, say, your wedding, or a down payment on your house,or even drug money, but Vegas? I have no words for you.

Maybe in Canada or Australia, but not the united states. Paying retail in those countries is just dumb and everyone who lives in those regions should go through mail order.

A boxed set of 24 infantry costs $27.25 USD. That works out to about $1.13 USD per mini according to Mr. Calculator, the awesomest math machine ever.

Even the new Elven infantry which costs $33 for 24 infantry breaks down to $1.37 USD each.
