I was putting together an Isengard list and saw an Uruk Hai Warband was xx amount of points but the moment I added a captain/leader it jumped to double the cost. So my question is: is it worth it? Would it be better to swamp the enemy with two companies for the points or get one company with a leader to boost stats?

It is best to have a minimum of three companies, with a captain and a banner.

The last remaining company (8 models) in a formation is removed from the table when it loses half its models.

So, if your choice is limited to 1 co. + captain, or 2 co., I would take 2 companies.

For instance, I wanted to have 4 companies of uruks in 1 formation. So would it be better if:

4 companies, 4 captains, 4 banner bearers? or
4 companies, 1 captain, 1 banner bearer?

You can't do that.

A formation is made up of companies. But a formation may only have 1 command company, wherein all the upgrades (captains, banners, musicians, taskmasters, goblin drums, Hasharin, etc.) are placed, and where the epic heroes must go if they join the formation. The command company is the first company purchased and the last company removed.

Note that cavalry works differently, since a cav company consists of only 2 models, but you still only get one command company. You have to designate which one it is, and so it can happen that epic heroes that join a cav formation may be removed before the command company is destroyed.

I thought one company formations were an option in some unit types. If so, couldn't each one be its own command company?

Thank you. That makes more sense. One command company within a formation. So as I get into battle, I can pull casualties from the other companies in the formation leaving the command company until the end.
