Ok so me and a friend have been working on some terrain for the table. I don't know how it came up but we decided we wanted some cliffs. So after going to Home Depot and spending 7$ on some of the foam board. And after about 3 minutes of planing (which is a lot more than we normally do.) we cut stacked and glued down the basic shapes of the cliffs we wanted figured I'd show y'all our progress so far and see if we can get any tips.

Ok I just found some old pics so I figure I'll show y'all everything. These first ones are right after we had taken the butter, bread, steak, and hobby knifes to them and tried to make em look cliff like I guess.
The first 4 pics here are from the plateau were doing. The plan is to build it in a sort of U shape and then make a road from the top down and around the bend to the table surface. Were building a small bunker/scout building to go at the top. Here are the pics of after we had it glued together but I still hadn't finished cutting it all/making the slope to it.

These next ones are from today when we've finished cutting up the sides and putting the cracks. the small building on top is what we have for the bunker/scout building so far.

Next this one was just meant to be a small cliff face but we added corner bits so you could use it on either side and to make it stick out a bit more. the ends are solid foam while the middle is hallow. on a side not the hallow bit is just big enough for us to fit a soda can in.
In the first pics we've puttied up one side and are int he process of waiting for it to dry before putting up the other side. so you can see one side all puttied and the before hand.

The next 2 are after we've puttied and we've applied the I guess you'd call it the base coat it's black paint mixed with some fine sand I got from the sand blaster at work.

So these are our cliffs so far. tho we can't decide what color we want them to be in the end. a mix of grass and rock like you'd see in a forest. or like those you'd see in the desert. or a mix of the two. maybe something completely different who knows.
But any tips on painting something this big/ideas/tips for next time would be greatly appreciated.

It looks great.

I normally have a few spare infantry models around when I am creating scenery. If the terrain is going to be playable it means I can make sure there is some level ground around to balance them on.

Also I have been partial to some tea leaves scattered around, just adds a different texture to normal flocks when you are painting foiliage and grasses etc.

Looks nice, better than I could do. I would go with mostly gravel and small rocks with a little static grass poking out in places.

That tea leaves idea is genius - i've been thinking I want to do an autumnal forest base, and don't want to get brass etched leaves.

OT - nice piece, I look forward to seeing it painted up

The tea leaves is a nice ida and we might try something similar. Tho being in south Texas we don't have a lot of tea.

But ya an update we added some paint to the smaller cliff so figured I'd show y'all. Were gonna water down some brown paint to a poor mans wash and run over the sand and then add in some grass here and there. Gonna test out some leaves see what we like.

And just cause we were playing with it. A buddy picked up/made(we're not sure which) this little building. We primed it black and then hit it with the textured spray paint. added in some cut up Pepsi box for the shingles. added on some search lights cause they look cool, a box from the tank bits inside for a safe and a small one on the side for a power box, and a broken hanger for the pipe on the side. A couple Popsicle sticks for support and for the models to stand on.

Looks great! I love the different texugtres you have on it. Looks quite playable as well.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

That worked out pretty well. Thought it was going to be a mess from the first few pics, but the finish is excellent. Good work

I second Flashman.. the final product came out great! Suggestions though, I use a elmars glue mixture, 75% sand, 25% glue and water to consitency for the sealant.. Id imagine it would make it more rigid than just paint. Also, if you plan on making more, Id invest in a styrofoam cutting wand.. Its pretty much a soldering iron with a long wire sticking out that cuts through it like butter.. Saves a whole lotta mess, and I picked mine up for $15 at a craft shop.

Looks great.

Some larger piles of rocky rubble around the base of it in places (piled up against the cliff) would be nice...

Meanwhile, moving this one over to the Blogs section.

I was gonna wait til we finished but I guess I can show it anyway this is the other plateau were working on. Were trying to decide on how to make the road, if we want asphalt or a dirt road and what shape to make the bunker at the end. but it doesn't sop us from playing with it half done.
But before that the house I posted a couple days ago we tweaked it, and painted it. Figure I'd let y'all see it.

The building looks cool, but you should add a brown wash to the light itself to add contrast.
