This is my company command squad.
A company commader with a Power Weapon
4 Veterans, all with meltaguns
They all have Carapace armor and camo cloaks. And krak grenades.

I would say thats ok infantry.

You're joking, right? While the Guard do have good infantry, that squad is ridiculous. Those five men are costing 145 points. There are many other better uses of so many points in the IG and other armies.

. . . until I charge them with 20 Ork Boyz, costing only 120 points, at which point your Company Command squad consists of five mangled corpses.

What's the point of this thread.....? I play IG as well, and know all too well that IG infantry DOES suck. Your command squad proves nothing. They're an HQ choice, of course they're better than the run-of-the-line troops. But yes, Imperial Guard infantry sucks. They are easily ripped apart in close assault, mediocre in the shooting phase, have toughness 3 and a 5+ save...yes, they are bad. Tau are about the only basic troops in the game worse in close combat.

Once, watching a 40k battle, I watched 1 mob of 9 Chaos Space Marines break through a line. There were 5 squads of Imperial Guard. They were ripped apart.

And not just in close assault. The strength of the Imperial Guard is in numbers. They are absolutely god-awful infantry, but they outnumber every other army--except maybe Orks--in 5 out of 6 games.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
It is possible to change this some, by upgrading your troops to Vets with Carapace Armor, but they're still not GOOD infantry. The best a guardsman can be is average.

I have to agree, that is a seriously bloated squad. 4 meltas - fine - but of the other 4 upgrades, just pick one. And probably not the PW. Or the Carapace.

the only worthwhile and reasonable CC character (at 185 yarrick is not practical) is stracken. he gives basic troops counter attack to basic troops which is nice and hes got some pretty good stats

...this CC squad is worse

I play IG, so seriously what are you trying to prove?

Why not post some tactical advice on getting the best out of out infantry squads or maybe you haven't seen a successful IG build?

Don't feed the troll?

Also, I reckon your just fairly new to IG, sinking that many points into units that really wont give you those points back in game isn't what you'd like to do.

The eye of terror.

The way I approach IG is different from the OP. He is obviously trying to have a squad of "heroes" where they kick butts and take names.

In my mind, IG is at its best thematically when it is a mass of nameless men, each a hero in his own way, but not for great deeds but for refusing to back down in the face of great adversity.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

You can give them whatever you please. No changing the fact that they have BS/WS/I/T 3. There's alot that still going to roll over them.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

You want a close combat IQ squad.

Go through this handy little routine:

1. Is your squad called 'Rough Riders'?
If Yes go to 2, if No go to 3.

2. Add lances to all squad mambers. Congratulations you have your close combat squad!

3. Don't bother.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

If you want a fairly good close combat squad, make a blob of 30 guardsmen (50 is just too big), power weapons on all the sergeants, at least 1, maybe 2 commissars (with power weapons) and throw in some heavy and special weapons to thin the enemy down on the way in.

Expensive, but they do the trick. And they won't beat some of the real dedicated combat units, or MC's or walkers.

I have also had surprising luck with Stormtroopers with flamers (as they all have pistols and a close combat weapon, they can put out a pile of attacks on the charge), but they are not for anyone, and more of a backup combat unit.

For a firebase infantry list though, it is hard to beat the IG, even just for sheer number of shots and heavy weapons.

gosh, I havn't even played a game of warhammer yet. My friends piled on me and said I suck for choosing imperial guard because of there infantry. I don't think I will post on these forums much more, ill just read because everything i said gets flammed and piled and I end up getting called names.

sorry you feel that way. but it's Dakka. not for the faint of heart! i'd suggest being a little less thin skinned. and don't give up. you can gather helpful insight in the flames(sometimes it's just flaming too!).

OT
IG aren't Space Marines. they're cheap for a reason. and they're meant to die in droves. i've accepted it and love playing IG!

I know, I've realized that too. It's just that I was facing an eldar with proxies (which i didn't even finish) and I had 3 squads of guardsmen and they died on the first turn. It was like 500 point battles.

IG are bad infantry in the sense that very little in the WH40k universe won't beat the crap out of them in either a gun duel or hand-to-hand.

However, they become great infantry when you realize that you get 10 guys for 50 points, and they unlock Chimeras, special and heavy weapons.

For 115 points, an AV12 tank and 10 men with a flamer and an autocannon are viciously tough versus most other 'common' troop units.

Put your men in transports and they'll do a lot better, especially against Eldar who don't have great answers for a wall of AV12.

Clearly you posted to test your friends theory that guard infantry suck, and got a loud confirmation but wait till they start cursing your armoured power! Let them choke on some leman russ shells, they'll get the idea

Ah this is dead wrong....hybrid lists do very well, even with 2, 1, or even no veteran units....and while numbers alone do not win numbers, numbers+lots of tanks and skimmers = very competitive.....all veterans in NOT the only way to go with the IG, as many true IG players have attested...

Right. The thing with vets is that their primary function is melta delivery, but you can get that cheaper with a PCS or even Inquisitorial Stormtroopers. If you want plasma take it in a CCS or Inquisitor Lord's retinue and you're good to go.

Bog-standard Guardsmen can outshoot just about anything and just need some support against vehicles and whatnot.

IG close combat is this...

Shell the OpFor with LRBTs and Hellhounds and pop their tanks with Vendettas and Melta Vets.......

Then, walk through their smoldering ashes with your infantry....about as effective in CC as IG can get
