Can a model with a heavy weapon shoot if it turns (as in, just rotates in place) in the movement phase?
Is turning in place considered movement? I can't find anything clear about this in the rulebook.

I am asking because a heavy weapon Space Marine was facing away from the target I wanted him to shoot at, and my honorable opponent said that if the Marine rotated in the movement phase, he would not be able to shoot. He explained this as 'rotating is moving.' He said that 5th edition is played as determining LOS through the model's eyes so the model could not see the target if he was facing away from it. If this is correct, then where is the field of vision (say 90 degrees?) defined in the rules?

Linked to this is the question- if one model in the unit rotates (classed as movement) then all the heavy weapons in the unit cannot shoot.

If anyone has any input, official or otherwise, I would appreciate your help. I am just trying to get some clarification.

(BTW- this is my first post, so feel free to rip into me, just to make me feel welcome!)

Because we’re here,lad...

Firstly,Welcome to dakka.

Secondly, try to keep the threads in their relevent headings. You're in introductions but the title of your thread suggests it should be in 'You make da call',you'll face the wrath of the MODs if not (even though they are very nice)

Thirdly, if I'm not mistaken, in 5th ed it does not matter which way the model faces, same with vehicles rotating on the spot , but I always have a habit of facing my minis towards the enemy!

Short Answer: no

For just an infantry unit it doesnt matter, its assumed he faces properly to fire at his target, provided he can draw line of sight to the target.

This also does not count as moving for a infantry model.
But It does for a vehicle, regardless of the amount of distance moved/not moved.

Also: Welcome to Dakka, you are going to love it here!

For further repeatative confirmation I belive this particular instance IS covered specifically in the 5th edition rule book. You CAN rotate a model and shoot heavy weapons with infantry what you can NOT do is move them within a squad or swap positions of models in a squad even if the rest of the unit remains stationary.

It doesn't matter if you rotate a model, tank or not, they don't count as moving, as long as the outside of their base is in the same spot, it's not like Fantasy. Look in the 40k rule book. Turning on the spot never counts as movement for shooting purposes, even for vehicles. Why would you need to swap places with another model in the squad? if half the squad can see a target the whole squad can. Just like if half of your squad is in area terrain, the whole squad is. If you have a squad that hasn't moved, and has a heavy weapon in it, if half the squad can see what you are aiming the heavy weapon at, but the physical model of the heavy weapon can't see, it doesn't matter. He can still fire. They added the Majority Rules for squads in the 5th edition 40k rule book. it really speeds the game up, and keeps down arguements. Thank you!
