Ok so i made the model with a slight conversion, and gave one of my sternguard a combi plasma.

Painted it so it looks awesome, and then... read the codex properly.

Hellfire bolts wound on 2 regardless of toughness, combi flamer is good for crowds, combi melta is good for vehicles.

What possible use is there for a combi plasma?! I really want to use my model, but it seems entirely pointless giving them anything other than flamers or meltas as the special ammo is great for MC and infantry anyway, and melta is way better for armor pen! plus, you cant kill yourself with a combi melta!

Am i missing something? Is there any feasible use of it? I really want to use that model now! :S

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Better for killing MEQs and TEQs and tyranid MCs than other weapon options, but with the risk of killing yourself it's not really worth it IMO. Sternguard are for combi-flamers and combi-meltas.

I don't think there's any reason for the combi-plasma, considering the special ammo. Rip that baby off and put it on a Tactical Seargent, maybe.

The combi-plasma is good against Terminators and MC and can damage vehicles.

I agree with the above. And lets be realistic, you only have to worry about the plasma melt down, on a roll of 1. And even then, you get an armor save. And last I checked SM get a 3+. So why does everyone cower from them again?
I literally lost 1/ONE/UNO/some other language that means the #1, in the 7 years I played chaos, mini to a plasma melt down. And I used plasma weapons on pretty much everything that could take them. So I think failing once in probably 1000 shots is pretty damn good

What others have said. Armour Piercing of 2 vs Save 2-3. S7 to inflict Instant Death on some T3 model ( pesky Eldar Psykers ). Anti-vehicle. By all means use him! It also gives your Veterans some character to help them stand out.

You'll be wanting a lot of plasma if you run into these new Tyranid beasties. T6 with 6 wounds is just begging to get some hot and heavy plasma lovin'.

Chance of a single marine killing himself with his rapid-firing plasma gun = .11

So if you have an entire squad of 10 rapid firing you'll probably lose 1. It's not a big deal, but it's there.

Its S7 ap3 Ok that is good it can deal with a Light Tank So i don't know why your complaining. That and it can rapid fire. And it's range is 24. not 18!

Is it bad? No.

Do Sternguard really need it? Also no.

Between your weapons, you have answers to all the things that you should Plasma at MEQ, TEQ or MCs.
Of all the Combis, Melta is the best because you have nothing for anti-tank (atleast up close) and a Flamer here or there isn't bad for pure horde.

Unless the Beast in question has been given FNP by a Tervigon. Then you want the AP2.

I know that some people like to go half flamer, half melta. Why not half melta, half plasma?

Combi meltas make them more versatile against walkers, AV14 tanks, etc. You really don't want to take chances with a combi-plas if you don't have to when you have a defiler 6 inches away from you.

There you go using your ?common sense? again.

Oh yeah, but I think there's going to be a bit of a paradigm shift where you can't just take meltas and flamers as a catch-all to be ready for anything.

A few monsters on the table will make you need to up your number of high-strength, high rate of fire weapons.

I'm not saying not to take meltas. I'm saying shave some points from somewhere and take both. Maybe put Combi-Plasmas on your Veteran Sergeants in your tactical squads and keep your Sternguard equipped for Alpha-Strike tank hunting.
