since im a newbie(therefore im still palnning on what to buy and what lists to use) im having thought about making my entire army a walker list but ive heard that deff dread lists arent competitive(and i want to be a competitive player :( ).

What you're looking for is something called a 'kan wall' list, where you take 9 killa kans as your heavy support, a big mek with kustom force field for your HQ, some max size boyz mobs for troops (2-4), and then a deff dread or two taken as troops choices depending on how many points you have how many big meks. You don't want just deff dreads for troops because they can't take objectives, being vehicles.

Well, that and BWs are also heavy support slots so unless you're buying them as dedicated transports for Nobs you can't really fit them in a single FOC. Mostly though, the trouble comes from battlewagons being too fast for the walkers to keep up with and so you end up feeding your army to your opponent in nice bite-sized chunks.

Screw objectives!

I would love to field 2 DD's, 9 KK's, and a Stompa full of Big Meks & burnas.

Effective? Maybe. Fun? Oh, Hells yes!

What about 9 kans, 3 dreads, 2 minimum sized Nobs squads with 2 KFF Big Meks attached... I dunno how points effective it would be, but it would get there....

@Dronze: why the Nobz? They aren't scoring (troops) unless there is a matching Warboss for each squad, and the KFF Meks compete with those.

I guess technically you could get away with 1 KFF mek, 1 warboss, your dreads, and 1 squad of Nobz, but I think you'd be better off by just giving in and taking Boyz and/or Gretchin.

I face a Dreadbash all the time; I hate it. I believe I have had only a single game where I took my Sisters against it where I was not massacred, though I still lost even then.

Shep ran one some time back (late fourth edition?); you could check the battle reports forum to see his list and how he played it. From recollection, he took Big Meks, a Kan Wall, Boyz, Dreads and Lootas. Very, very nasty.

There's no way to fit in both 9 kans and 3 dreads. The max is 9 kans a 2 deff dreads (non-apocalypse.) Also, the above idea has no troops choices that aren't walkers and so can't take objectives.

My casual kan wall variant (2000 pts) is 9 grotzooka kans, 1 dread, 2 squads of lootas, a medium sized squad of kommandos + snikrot, 3 30-man boyz mobs, and 2 KFF meks, IIRC. Plenty of bodies and special Orks to get the job done.

Up in your base, killin' all your doods.

Kan walls are one of the best Orks lists, no doubt.

I'm contemplating on using Grots as troops. It's a Rebel Grots army!

I played Kanwall for almost a year. Then fell in love with Tau And I'm highly glad/upset the platics are coming out. Of course you won't spend as much as I did getting the 9 Kans @$20/ea vs the better plastics coming out next month.

It's a fun list to run.

This is a very powerful list (for Orks) that I've used to great effect. As an added bonus it's about the most effective one you can run against Land Raider armies because your vehicles can actually hem them in and prevent them from moving more than 6". It has its problems and weaknesses, of course, but it's very shooty and can maul most anything in close combat.

@Sourclams: I'm curious, what do you think is its biggest weakness - shooty (maybe that's a bit of a redundancy) IG (lots of cover ignoring templates/blasts etc)?

It still has some problems against Land Raider/Assault Terminator Marines. It performs better than most Ork lists but 6+ SS Termies can take down 9 Kanz in one big multicharge if you're not careful.

Seer Council Eldar are a huge problem for you. Witchblades on bikes tear through Kanz and Dreads with almost no fear of taking return wounds due to low numbers of attacks and fortuned invuln saves.

IG aren't a big problem. Chaos isn't a bit problem. Daemons get bogged down versus that many Walkers. Non-Seer Eldar can be shot to death. SW gunlines do actually have enough S8+ to take you on but non-gunlines get bogged down versus the Walkers.

It's by no means an EZMode win, but you certainly can compete in a take-all-comers environment.

Is the list viable without lootas?

I had come up with this earlier today:

HQ:
2xBig Mek with KFF - 170pts

Troops:
2xDeff Dreads with 2xDCCWs - 210pts

3x30 Slugga boys w/Nob, Bosspole, PK - 660pts

Heavy Support:
2x3 Killa Kanz with Rokkits
3xKilla Kanz with Grotzooka's

total came to 1475, I was going to throw the last 25 points to the big meks for the poop and giggles of it.

Sorry forgot to add that I play @ 1500pt level. If I go up to 1750 or 1850, then I would squeeze in some lootas or maybe Snikrot and Kommandos

I think we're going to see quite a few kan wall armies, now that it's become easy to model (and potentially all in plastic - yay!)

Chaplain, personally I'd change one mob to shoota boyz with rokkits or big shootas, but otherwise it seems a sensible list. I worry that it's not a particularly fast army, which will hurt you sometimes - possibly a trukk boyz mob could be useful?

Having a look at the sprues, i think the new Kans are quite a bit chunkier than their metal counterparts. This could mean that you can get away with using fewer cans and have more points to spend and other stuff to hide behind them.

I can see the 'Kan list becoming quite popular once these things hit the shelves; guess I'd better order another Exorcist for my WH

This looks tempting to make.

KFF Mek

SAG Mek

45 Lootas

90 Shoota Boys

2 Dreads

9 Kans, rokkits

possibly even some gretchin.

That second Big Mek needs to have a KFF too.

That style at 1500 is roughly:

KFF Mek

KFF Mek

15 Lootas

30 Shoota Boys
-3 Big Shootas
-Nob w/PK and BP

30 Shoota Boys
-3 Big Shootas
-Nob w/PK and BP

30 Shoota Boys
-3 Big Shootas
-Nob w/PK and BP

3 Killa Kans w/Grotzooka

3 Killa Kans w/Grotzooka

3 Killa Kans w/Grotzooka

And is what I've got planned for my army list.

That fits into 1500 points, Pika? It looks pretty solid, but as with Chaplain's list above, a bit slow for my taste.

The army also needs some anti-tank fire too. How about equipping the kans with some rokkits and throwing some rokkits into the ork mob as well.

I have run similar lists in the past, except I used a battlewagon to anchor my line and to spread one KFF farther. With a killcannon, you only want it moving 6 inches anyway, so the kans can keep up. Once you get in charge range, the kans run up and the Battlewagon can race off to hit more distant targets.
