Probably work

Theoretically speaking, could you join an IC up with the techmarine gunner on a Thunderfire? I know he becomes an IC if it blows up, but he's listed as infantry up until that point. Subquestion: Assuming he can have an IC join, what happens if the techmarine goes IC. Do they automatically unjoin?

An IC can join an Artillery unit (page 55).
The IC cannot operate the Artillery.

If the Techmarine dies, then I'm going to assume that the Thunderfire Cannon is considered destroyed as well and the IC becomes unjoined.

If the Cannon is destroyed, then the IC is still joined to the Techmarine's unit.

Yes you can join an IC to the unit (since it starts 2 models strong) If you loose the thunder fie cannon then tech priest would remain joined to the IC.

In practice i call this a high value target to shoot to death.

(if there are no more crew the artilery is also lost)

Yeah, I can't necessary condone the practice myself, thanks for the response though. I was asking on behalf of a friend of mine who is thinking about slapping a generic captain on his cannon so as to wound allocate off of the gunner.

He's actually listed as Artillery, not Infantry.

But yes, IC's can join Artillery units.

There is no particular reason for them to separate. IC's can join other IC's.

That would be the case, yes... The cannon is destroyed if there are no more crew. Joined IC's do not count as crew. The IC wouldn't be 'unjoined' so much as simply left by his lonesome...
