so I have been talking with the army reserve and they really only had 2 jobs open that would be a remote fit... so I went and talked to the Guard today, and holy crap almost every job had an opening with a unit around my town.
They said with my ASVAB score I should look into going Military Intelligence. And since I want to eventually become a police officer for my hometown they threw out these jobs.
Intelligence Analyst (35F)
Human Intelligence Collector (35M)... fancy name for interrogator.
Signals Intelligence Analyst (35N)
And of course MP (31B)
That 35M sounds really good... but I don’t know how I would do with learning Persian Farsi or Arabic
But right now im leaning towards the 35F...
I know there are a lot of dakka members serving or have served before... what would be your advice to someone who knows very little about this.

You don't have color blindness, do you? That will kill the MP part.
I flirted with the WI Air Guard recruiters after college, and anything remotely interesting to me (aircraft weapons, etc) wasn't available for me. All they could come up for me at the time which didn't require good color vision was plumber.
I sorta saw this coming after 3 years in AFROTC when my nav slot got shot away. Our test was the AFOQT, and I blew away all the scores there. I got washed out after my third year, due to my academic struggles at the time, though I eventually did graduate. Before then, I was really struggling to find a non-color friendly carreer field.
Fortunately my children don't suffer this. My older son is off to be a USAF SP this summer to kick off his law enforcement career. It makes me jealous and wishing I could start over again.

I once heard that police departments don't like taking on former military MPs, because they have to undo so much of their training to transition them to a civilian law enforcement mindset. YMMV.
In terms of long-term career options, I'd recommend either 35F or 35M. Both sound like they'd provide a foundation for Detective-related skillsets. I know you expect to struggle with the language requirements, but you really should leap at any opportunity to go to the Defense Language Institute. It's supposedly one of the best places in the military to get stationed: learn your language by day, and hang out in sunny California by night....for up to a year (depending on the language)!
Oh, and of course I have to throw in that you should pick 11B, because everyone knows if you ain't Infantry you ain't shi-!

The comment about 31B is spot on. I considered the same route, talked to a state police captain that's a family friend and got told the same thing.
Military law and Civil law are very different. as you probably know, civil law revolves around innocent until proven guilty, whereas the military is the opposite.
Mike and Novermber are both very valuable skillsets in the civilian world. Both could net you jobs with any federal law enforcement agency, and signals int. can bring be worth a super-fat check in the private sector.
Intelligence analyst is a highly varied job. I've got a few battles that went into that MOS, and they say its kinda of the Dane Cook of the intelligence community. You'll work with material from all of the other sources.
Anyway, I've got battles that went to Huachuca (Intelligence AIT) and Lost in the Woods, (MP AIT) so I can get you some info on those, if you'd like.
If you're seriously wanting to do any kind of intelligence work, you're going to have to pass a top secret security test, and background check. I had to pass one for my MOS (EOD, 89D) so again, I can give you the scoop there.
Feel free to PM my any questions. I was in the Guard for about two years before I was granted an ETS and an Honorable Discharge, and I went to Ft. Jackson for basic training, which is where they send the vast majority of 35 series soldiers-to-be.

I shouldn’t have too much of a problem with a background check. Ive got a speeding ticket... that’s it.
And while it dose sound nice to go to California and go to school during the day and hit the town at night... the problem is that I would actually have to LEARN the language. Im not so hot with the structure of a language (nouns, pronouns, adjectives... ECT ECT) so I really don’t know if I could do it.

Signal is a great way to go to transfer into a normal job in the civilian market which trust me is what you want. Many of the MP's I know had trouble switching into civilian law enforcement as a lot of agencys don't like the military style police training as they have to get their canidates to forget it. As for the interogater that is a great job 1 year of training with language training(most likely farcey) being thrown in the mix. What you have to look into is a lot of this stuff can earn you a quick ASSOC. degree from a nearbye college and you have to think what you want to do for a living. I was 11C on active duty for 4 1/2 years and had a blast. Now I am a 25Q as when I got out work was slim for a former Infantry mortarmen. Doing signal opened up MANY doors for me and once this contract with the gaurd is up I am moving into the IT field at a much higher pay, were as my buddys had tospend years in college to learn half of what I earned I got it for free(actually got paid). Now you also have to look at a lot of those jobs need either a secret or Top secret clearance and depending on the security cord. this can cause a lot of problems for you. Also if you can't trace back ALL you data for the past 10 years your in trouble. They will need tons of character witnesses and they will talk to your school, your local law enforcement, and parents, family. If you ahve a speeding ticket we willl know and if you don't own up to it initially then you fail. Take all of this in mind and if you ahve questions feel free to pm me and good luck.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Well.
I guess ill go with the 35N or 35F. Would be good for several different jobs not limited to law enforcement.
Ill have to study up on my math though... didn’t make it past geometry in high school

I'd recommend the Air Force if you're going for a chair-sitting field Couldn't hurt to see what they have to offer since their standard of living is substantially better than the other branches.
Might be worth searching and posting at the military.com forum:

I'm actually enlisting in the California National Guard next week, and sort of in the same position as you. With an ASVAB score in the 95th percentile and all lines scores 127+ I can pretty much pick anything, but I'm really between two things. I want to go into the intel field as my career, but at the same time I've always wanted to become a pilot and something in the aviation field would help me with that. I think I'm going with something in the 35 series anyways.
Though I'll always wonder what would happen if I went 15T and went on that track towards Blackhawk pilot.

Its always a good idea to learn a critical language if you have the opportunity. There's a lot of money, and job security, in continuing service if you go that route.

Have you been to college or do you have the means to do so? I don;t remember the specifics, but that college education (especially if it's aircraft related) can net you a Warrant Officer's position, which means flying right off the bat.

I am currently going to college, and plan on going SMP when I transfer to the school I've been looking at. My current school does not have ROTC. I've looked at most of the paths of becoming a pilot, even the High School to Flight School program, but you have to convince them why YOU, without a degree, deserves that coveted flight school spot more than the prior service/college degree holder/etc. And I don't believe I could do that at this moment. But I still haven't made my decision with it all, and have until next week. Aviation or Intel. Back to thinkin'!

How deployable are MI jobs (think im going with 35N)? Despite playing with my plastic soldiers, I have something of a life... it would suck to join up and get the 1 year gone 3 months back another year gone treatment.
