I looked it up online and never really got a clear answer... CC do more but die faster, and shooties are just a nuisance and bother the enemy infantry!

What sort of Dreadnoughts are you talking about? Ork, Chaos Space Marine, Codex Space Marine, or Space Wolf? in what proportion? According to what strategy? Against which opponents? Under what sort of conditions?

Does a dread with a shooting weapon and a DCCW count as shooty or CC?

Deff Dreads; You want to go all-out choppy with these guys, because a Deff Dread can't hit the broad side of a barn. From the inside. 4 DCCW, grot riggers, extra armour; 120 points for 6 S10 attacks on the charge. Pure gold.

CSM Dreadnoughts; The CC arm/plasma cannon configuration seems to be popular, because you can put it next to a Land Raider or something that the plasma cannon can't hurt if it goes nuts. This essentially halves the chance of the Dread going berserk and hurting your own army.

For standard Dreads, I prefer the RifleDread or the Plasma/Missile Dread. Both make fairly cheap shooting platforms.
For Ven Dreads, I like to keep the DCCW due to WS5 and take Plasma Cannon, Assault Cannon, Multi-Melta since they get the best bonus from BS5 in my opinion.
For Ironclads, keep it simple with Pod + Heavy Flamer.

As for which ones are most useful in a generic SM army I'd rank them as Standard then Ironclad then Venerable.

Shooty dread all the way, I find CC dreads way to fragile.

The basic dread is great, maybe add a HF if you're going to be podding it in.

Really depends on the kind of list you're trying to put together though. The Dual AC one is the first one I'd go to for a shooty/stand-offish list and the MM/HF one if you plan on closing the distance ASAP. Ironclads are good too, I'd probably keep 'em barebones though.

From what i've seen shooty dreads are better than close combat dreads. Fritz (a eldar/ space marine player who runs the "way of saim hann" blog) has a video on youtube discussing dreads. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDj7Jzh4eh8&feature=PlayList&p=6B26A02ECE9CADF2&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=8

as an ork player i can defenatly say that a shooty dread is alot more of a nusence. just put some high S wepons on it and it will be good. be carefull using flamethrowers, always have someone covering the dread and take down as many as you can befor they get to u.

I agree with the Ironclad bit wholeheartedly, but wanted to expand on this a little bit...

Are you tailoring a list for a specific opponent? Because I run an Ironclad with a Melta and a HF in a Drop Pod because in a Tournament setting I like to have the Versatility. It's nice to flame a bunch of boyz, but knocking out a Battlewagon on the the first turn can be a game changer.

Im not experienced in using them , but i imagine , even though CC Dreds hit hard , they are still slow and close ranged. You might possibly spend the whole game chasing 1 target ( if they dont feel like sending CC units to attack your dred ) while the ranged ones can threaten enemy anytime they want.

As a BT player I must vote for shooty dreads. Ok, fluffwise a BT dread should be a CC beast, but BT have less heavy weapons options than other marines. I need some antitank weaponry. By the way, If I field a Predator, I always choose lasscannons.

If I have points to field 2 dreads, one will be a CC VenDread, and the other one a normal one with lasscannon and rocket launcher. In smaller games... I need moar dakka!

P.S.: Is it missile launcher or rocket launcher in english?
