Chaos are more fun to paint and build.

So i was wondering , how corrupted does a marine have to have before i can legally use them for Chaos Codex?

And how much can a Marine be renegades and still be consider loyal enough to be used in Space Marine Codex?

Because when they decide to turn to the Chaos side , im sure they dont poof in an blink of an eye and turn into what Chaos Marine looks like?
Unless they are leaders i guess?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

To become a Chaos Space Marine you must pledge yourself to one of the many dark Chaos gods.

Then you receive mutations and whatnot.

To become renegade, well, Grot 6 pretty much has it down.

Reading through the current "Chaos" codex won't give you any tips really, so you need to look back into past codices.

A good start would be throwing away the Codex (as in the Codex Astarties) as being stupid or something like that. Slowly in time they'll lose faith in the Imperium and go renegade. All this time with the whipers of Chaos in their ear.

Although I'm sure that it will start with a higher up and the rest of the chapter will probably be unaware of their fall untill it is too late. I'm not sure if all the marines need to accept the Chaos gods or if their leader can simply pledge their allegiance and drag them down with him.

But, I'm in agreement with everyone else, it will be a fairly slow process. If they're unlucky they may become suspicious to the Inquisition, at the least the first obsticle would be the Chaplains. Of course you could just use the normal Codex until you want to include mutations into the legion. Or continue to if they're very subtle mutations

Renegades are still loyal to the Emprah, but are deemed heretics by the corrupt Imperium.

Chaos Marines are called Chaos Marines for a reason, they worship the Chaos gods.

There is a fine line between "renegade" and "Chaos".

Wasn't there a book about a Night Lord Assault Space marine who was in stasis for 10k years that went renegade and even though Chaos called to him, he decided against giving in to it though his chapter did?

I generally go with a rule of thumb of more than 5 smooth skulls on the armor, OR more than 2 spikey skulls means a marine is corrupted.

LunaHound are you just asking about a physical representation on models so that you can use standard SM for Chaos? If so...defiling the imperial crest and their chapter badge would be a good start.

You need to decide how far you want to go. A renegade can either love the imperium or hate it. They are considered renegades by the imperium's HQ (inquisition/etc) and not usually because they chose to be called that. Some have turned away from the imperium and become pirates, others just don't like the rigid racist structure, and some want to join chaos. As others have said it is only when they pledge themselves wholly to chaos that they become true chaos space marines. I would also say (as others in the past have) that the current "chaos" codex is really a renegade and beyond codex. It doesn't force you to have daemons(and in fact has very few options or rules), the units have very few mutations , and they just aren't the "chaos-y" space marines that they have been in the past (focusing heavily on the chaos cult troops and other chaos chapters: iron warriors, black legion, etc).

If you want to know how to model a newly fallen marine chapter(that has turned to chaos):

1)Deface or remove any imperial icons/symbols
2)Show small mutations, especially on higher ranking champions/hq/sorcs. Small growths of pustules/boils(nurgle), leatheriness of skin/noise amplifying equip(slaanesh), bird feathers/claws(tzeentch), or changing CCWs to power axes covered in blood/enemy skulls(khorne)
3)Have few if any daemons/daemon princes/obliterators/etc. They have not been loyal to chaos long enough to earn these kinds of gifts yet and should be fairly unmutated (but as above should have some small adornments).

In the embrace of the great Nurgle, I am no longer afraid, for with His pestilential favour I have become that which I once most feared: Death.

The Soul Drinkers are a perfect example of a mutated renegade chapter that still follow the Emperor.

Exactly what i would say, accept that you can still use as much Obliterators as you want. Your army could simply hire Obliterators to fight for them like Iron Warriors do. Also, as far as i know, being an Obliterator is not really a gift. It is a contagion the marine gets for living too long in the eye of terror and said contagion joins the marine, armor, and daemon into one entity.

Of all the mistakes you have made, the best are yet to come.

If you reread what I said I wasn't calling all of those gifts. I also called some of them mutations. It is a mutation (usually of former tech priests) caused by the obliterator virus which can be caught from the eye of terror, but is also being forcibly given to certain csms to increase the oblit numbers(especially in the Iron warriors chapter).

If she is fine with "hiring" units then she could have almost anything. There are plenty of CSM warbands out there working for money/power/fame that could bring daemons , defilers, or what not.
