Hello Dakka!

I just remembered that there is the old Codex:Catachans still available on the GW website. Just a quick question, has this codex ever been...well...officially overruled by the new IG codex or is it still valid to use it - just like old SM Chapter Codices that refer to the main SM Codex?

I don't think they've had the Catachan codex available for quite some time.

If it's on general release, it's still legal IMO.

Just like the DA codex hasn't been superseded by the new SM codex.

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I will then use my Guard in some friendly games with the old Catachan codex.

Yup, still legal, though most people might have an issue with it.

Where is it still available (I'm genuinely interested, I looked for it but couldn't find it)?

I haven't looked back at in a while but I'm sure there are quite a few references to 3rd edition rules that no longer make sense anymore, and if the codex does refer back to the Imperial Guard codex at all then many of those references are likely invalid too.

In other words, it would be pretty hard to use as-is in 5th edition games without a bunch of house rules to cover it.

The truth is, GW doesn't tell us when codices are no longer valid, they simply remove them from print and just expect people to eventually 'get it' when the rules in the codex stop making much sense with the newer versions of the game.

Yep. Only time I can remember them actually relasing a "no longer valid" statement on a codex was the old Assassins codex. The first DH FAQ stated it was no longer valid and that you had to use assassins from the DH book. Other than that, they've just had a general rule of thumb that a codex became invalid when a newer version came out. GW pretty much dropped the Catachan codex from their GTs when the previous IG codex came out.

As a minor nitpick, that was actually the revised first DH FAQ. Initially it said that the Assassins codex remained valid... but then they changed their minds two weeks later.

OK, it was the oldest one I have saved. Probably deleted the previous one, just as I deleted the one old Nid one that got changed within a couple of days and the SW one that just got changed.

For kicks and fun. Nostalgia. You can generate some epic jungle fights with the book ( ambushes, booby traps, oh my! ).

Just be prepared to make some house rules if you want to use this Codex. There are a few major problems if fighting under 5th Edition. One of the bigger ones is the way how LOS has changed. The major advantage of the Death World Veterans-rule in the Codex was that they could see through 12" of forest area terrain ( which gave them a big advantage ). Well, things have changed and area terrain no longer blocks LOS.
