I'm trying to decide between having: 2 predators with las canon sponsons (120pts each), and 1 pred and 1 whirlwind, for my 1k army.

Pros, Cons?... I'm not sure exactly what types of teams I'll be facing.

Moving this one to tactics...

Whirlwinds are meh IMO. they can't really hurt vehicles, but are really cheap. they can ignore cover and ignore horde armies armor saves.

Predators should only IMO be taken as either Destructor(autocannon + bolters) or Annhilator (all lascannons)

mixing the armament will give you versility at the expense of reliability. 3 lascannons can sit back on the board edge and snipe vehicles from a safe distance while having an autocannon instead of the Tl-lascannon means against heavy armored vehicles you lose effectivness(anything over AV12 will be difficult/impossable to damage with Autofire) and as long as you don't move you will be able to shoot everything.

Destructor preds will mow down infantry from a respectable distance with ease.

Autocnnon with las sponsons is OK. the auto cannon can still damage vehicles. Bolters with TL-lascannon is a NONO

2 Predators with turret auto cannon and las cannon sponsons is probably a better choice then a whirlwind with the current meta leaning towards mechanized armies.

The all las cannon predators are a bit expensive since the TL Las cannon turret upgrade is pretty expensive and its better to just stick with the default auto cannon.

Both options you presented are good, a single whirlwind, while not a huge investment, is still a huge threat to horde armies.

but I would go with the double pred.

I agree that Whirlwinds are only so-so, they CAN shoot indirect to get S5 hits on the side armor of vehicles that are hiding out of LOS, but its situational and not ideal.

for Preds the Autocannon/Las sponson is actually my favorite set of options, still relatively cheap and it keeps it honest. lascannons are a poor option for anti-heavy tank, but they are Excellent at popping most transport vehicles, in the 1000-1500 point level they are quite good. Autocannons fill a similar role, with a higher damage potential than a single twin linked lascannon even if it takes more to penetrate.

I agree with GT above that TL LC+Heavy Bolters is a big no-no option, and that triple las/full dakka are both good options as well.

We don't play very seriously most times, but my whirlwind distracts them a lot. Even if I don't get kills they are still concerned about bunching up infantry and trying to get around the terrain to shoot at it. So, not very effective, but fun to use and is a distraction.
