After several weeks of playtesting it seems that us tyranid players are having a hard time figuring out our new codex. I think the first problem is our collection everyone is using what they have so there are limitations to what we can do or try out. Also there is a fixation on anti-tank, everyone is trying to come up with a way to beat IG chimera spam list. We all know that the check box approach to making list is bad but alot of list I have seen are taking this approach.

I think we need to stop looking for answers and start creating problems, and I mean literally. Instead of pondering how we are going to stop xyz, we need to create a new equation for everyone else to answer!

So my question is to non-nid players what in our codex do you think is scary?

Your imagination

None of it is scary, A lot of people seem concerned about the Doom of Malan'tai or what ever it's called. (Personally I think it looks pretty pathetic, but it's a good scare tactic)
IIRC, You now have the ability to field a list with nothing smaller than warriors, which i would find... interesting.

'zerkers slice through SM tac's like a Chainaxe through jelly!

The Swarmlord is pretty nice, as is the Tyranid Prime. The Zoanthrope frightens any Mech list, even LR or Monolith spam.

Taken by itself nothing in the army is really that scary. Combinations of units looks to be the main strength of bugs. A Trygon within range of the Venomthrope is almost unapproachable from a melee standpoint and difficult to engage with shooting as well, Tervigons can throw up gaunt screens in front of other MCs to keep them from getting charged while giving them FnP and Zoanthropes can put infantry on the table instead of in their vehicle making them vulnerable to the list. In general, it looks like a list where you have a few heavy hitters and the rest of the army tooled to get them where they can do the most damage.

Marbo-like Lictor. Monolith/marbo syndrome. You worry about it. You make decisions based around it. You can ignore it to your doom. You can easily waste firepower on it. Crazy-mad deployment rules.

Fast non-tyrant MC's.. Namely trygon, mawloc, harpy.

Outflanking fast-moving hormagants. Toxin sacs and they become a threat to alot of egde-hugging vehicles.

Outflanking tervigons; Add them to the mobile MC's (see above).

Crazy synergistic MC formations. 2+/4++ Hive tyrants. 3+/5++ Tervigons possibly with FNP. Soopah gants (see below) Oh, I say 5++ invunerables are there is v.little weaponary that will ignore both 2+ or 3+ armour saves as well as ignoring cover-saves.

Super-Gants; Fielded with the above formation, 5+ cover and 4+ FNP (on all non ap2, non str6 weaponary) makes them pretty resistant to small-arms for 5pt/model. Not to mention re-rolls to hit & wound (vs t4)!

Im scared but not worried, just yet. I dont think nob bikers came out within a few months of the codex release but they rocked hard when they did. Same goes for the new Nids.. variations and strategies will come out and be developed that will rock. Or I would like to hope

A lot of the "competitive" Tyranid lists that have been posted recently don't seem very strong to me. Tervigons get a big "meh." I might take one or two, but only in the Troops slot, and I'd generally try and conserve their spawning until late game. I don't know about you, but I really don't like relying on units that malfunction almost half the time. FNP also seems like a red herring-- it really won't have as much of an effect as people seem to anticipate. I have lascannons and meltas for MCs (AP 1/2) and Thunderfire Cannons for Gaunts/Gants (ID). FNP won't help against any of that stuff. It might help against missile and autocannon spammers, but even then they can just alter their target priority. You also can't rely on psychic powers with the psychic defense that people seem to be busting out these days.

I think a lot of Tyranid armies that I've seen just aren't mobile enough. In my opinion people need to take another look at Fast Attack options and alternative deployment styles. Even if these elements won't win the game on their own, they can provide threats that the enemy has to deal with while the main swarm approaches. Gargoyles are quite frightening for their points. Harpies, Shrikes, and even Spore Mines can accomplish similar disruption.

There is this fixation on destroying transports, we need to break down what is the threat. There are problems that we can create with various techniques that can make our opponent shooting less effective. We are able to support all of our units in some form of fashion with other cc units rather its a new gaunt squad being created to charge or one of our fleet creatures. Lets face it Tyranids are not going to be able to table opponents, we are going to be able to control the board and win objective base games or win kp games by denying kill points.

Mawlocs. I run platoon IG atm, and my friend has 3 mawlocs. Well, technically 1 atm, he has yet to assemble the other two. Plus he's got about 64 gargoyles.

The marbo-lictor scares me as well.
