eey all

I just finished painting my big mek (i'll post pictures when he is based) but i cant really think of a cool way to base him, i want it to be something that is "mekky" like gears and stuff, but im very bad at making whole things from gs, so does anybody know a cool way to base him? he is glued to the middle of a standard gw base (the one that comes with big mek, i believe it is a 60mm one)

60mm is a dreadnaught base, isn't it?

Big mek base is 40 mm i believe. Look into the GW 40k basing kit, lots of useful resin and brass etch pieces in there to make your bases more characterful!

Get some of these:

Cheap cigarette lighters have small cog lie pieces in the safety mechanism, and a spring that pushes the flint up to the sparking mechanism, which resembles a gear.

i've used mini nuts and other small stuff that i could find in my garage. You can also find some pretty neeto stuff inside an old dvd player, and cheap old watches. Lots of gears there

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

Dollar stores have lots of little toy cars, lighters, etc. that have workable gears. Any hardware store will have little washers, screws, etc that you can use. Also, there are eyeglass repair kits for a buck or two that have tiny screws and screwdrivers, excellent for mek workshop stuff.

LOL, I am a smoker, so mine are usually empty when I take them apart... But aquiring the parts from the lighter should not cause it it explode. Simple remove the metal casing, and pry the desired bits out. The spring will pop up with the flint, so be prepared.

Don't try this at home! I am a professional (pyro)
Now the only question is what to do with the full lighter. If a lighter fails on my, I remove the desired bits for modeling, then I take it outside in the back yard and set it on the ground. Then I set the plastic prongs on fire and step back. Way back. The result is either a moderate fire ball, or an awesome flame thrower effect.

Look around ebay for watch cogs and gears. Also check stores like Good Will for old cheap watches. Ripping apart $1 toys is also a good idea. If it's a Big Mek an oiler Grot is almost a necessity

I second the crappy lighters. I live in a house full of smokers (myself included), so I claim all the broken/empty lighters I can get my hands on. I must have 2 dozen springs, gears, and strikers of slightly varying design.

Also grab any scrap electronics you can and get disassembling. Wires, chips, resistors, gears, and random little elctronic/mechanical doohickies abound.

Honestly, if you've got the space, scrounge EVERYTHING remotely mechanical and relatively small that you can. Tiny screws, wires, gears, little plastic housings... You'll find a use for it, eventually. I have 2 parts organizer trays - one for model bits and one for random crap that might work well with models.

I just went to my local hardware store and got a ton of little gears a 7 cents each. They're actually called toothed washers, but they look like gears. Add some dead marines or whatever to the base to make it look like the Big Mek is pwning everyone

P.S. I'll try to add a picture if my mom's camera isn't having one of those days. (What, I'm 13, of course I still live with my parent's. I'm proud to admit it! *I love you Mom* *I love you Dad*)

Busted old analogue clocks and watches could be a good source of tiny cogs, if you can find any.
