Hi, i just sold my Wood Hippies for 300$, and in three days i`m going to GW to get some brand new army. I`m considering all the armies, but especially TK and Skaven.
I like tactical armies (not just run up and charge), and magic, but also fighty-ness. Pros and cons about the different armies?
Cheers!
BTW, no spamming (Daemons are best, because they have monsters!), i want constructive tips please

Skaven just got a new book. I haven't seen any games with them in person but have heard good things. They are pretty solid is CC and have decent magic. TK are pretty sweet. I considered them as my first army. The book is a bit dated and really only seem to have a few viable builds these days.
As a Lizardmen player, I advocate for them. They are super flexible and have a nice spread of units allowing for a lot of diversity. Solid magic is a big strength. Now, they can't get as many pool dice as other armies (namely Daemons or VC) but have access to some sick abilities which helps make up for that by shutting down enemy magic. They have "fighty-ness", too. Saurus are one of the better core in the game. On the downside, they are prone to falling into pretty cookie-cutter lists to have maximum efficiency but by no means does that have to be the case all the time.

I have heard that the TK are dated, and a bit weak. On the other hand, I have also heard they have some really scary capabilites too...
Skaven is a horde army. I seriously don't know if that $300 is going to get you enough of them to work.
You'd want 6 clanrat boxes easily, possibly more. You split them in half and paint the less-well-equipped ones as slaves.
You'd want at least two Stormvermin boxes, maybe three, assuming you're going to use any. This also gives you easy conversions for warlords and cheiftains.
If you can get magnets, you can get by with just one Screaming Bell/Plague Furnace model. Otherwise you'd need two.
And if you go for a Plague Furnace you'll want two boxes of Plague Monks. You can convert some of them to be Plague Censer Bearers or Plague Priests fairly easily.
If you want to use Gutter Runners or Night Runners, you'll want some of the Night Runner boxes. Also good for Assassin conversions.
Then there is the Doomwheel (another box) and the A-bom (You'll have to convert your own).
Rat Ogres if you want to convert a Bonebreaker or Great Pox Rat (or use for A-bom parts).
Skaven take a certain.... dedication to paint and play. I've been working on mine for three editions now (not years, editions) and I still haven't got all of them ready to go yet!
Of course, my painting is painfully slow...

See, this is exactly what i said i didn`t want. If you have nothing to say, then say nothing
Anyways, i`ve pretty much decided to get TK. If i buy the battalion and a prince, how many points will that be (roughly). And i`m not sure whether i`m going to get a prince in chariot or on foot. In a chariot he would do more damage, but i feel the infantry need him more, just to win fights. I`m also getting a tomb scorpion me thinks
Cheers!

I would advise against tombkings since their models are SOOOO outdated... there must be an update around the corner for them soon, and then they'll be a very attractive choice imho.
I'm starting skaven, so I'm biased... but with the new models and book they are sex-ay

Tomb Kings are much less represented, I think the fluff is golden, plus even though the army book is old (and therefore, so are the models), the models still look good, particularly the chariots and Ushabti.
Plus, with a new book allegedly coming soon, you might get a leg up on the next must have army.
One big Pro is that Tomb Kings have awesome Special choices, and pretty good rare ones.
Cons are, you need lots of characters that are expensive points wise, the magic system is unlike anything else (that may be a pro as well!) and the core troops basically suck.
TK is an army that has to max out on characters. I favor a Tomb King as a general, then Liche Priests for every other slot. You need those priests.
An all chariot army is fun too, but TK light chariots don't hold up well for their points.

Yes, Tomb Kings are beginning to gather dust (heh ), so either wait what should be a year or so for the new book or go for the rats which are infinitely more fun (lots of painting though!)

I'd say skaven, but I agree with Vulcan that your $300 may not cover it. However, if you are really willing, here's what I would suggest (In USD, sadly) 2 Battalions (Gives you about 80 clanrats total) Book (Obviously) Character Bilsters And you'll have maybe enough to buy the rest. If you would want more, see if anyone will buy the Rat Ogres, Plague Monks or Giant Rats (Unless you want these, of course) But if you want to finish purchasing the army right then and there, I'd suggest Tomb Kings.

skaven are kool, but they rely on huge numbes, which means if you have a tight budget, you might not want to use them.

Well, back in Norway one battalion costs 150$, so yeah... I think i`m gonna go with Tomb Kings. Yesterday i found an old Screaming Skully and 3 Tomb Guards which i can`t remember buying or painting, So with my bucks what i will get is: Battalion, Screaming Skully, Tomb Scorpion and a Tomb King on foot, and of course the book. This will be the setup: 2X16 Bowmen with champ, one with Prince (which has 2h), 3 Chariots with full command, 6 Horse-archers, 1 Scorpion and a Catapult. I`m pretty sure that`s 1000pts.

Sweet! I often experiment with lists, etc. when considering an army and find out that it's not my style. I did this with beastmen and have decided to go for skaven instead
Dark elves are a great choice, they have a good variety of units, they can be competitive, and they look like a lot of fun to me
Congrats on taking the plunge!!

Thanks RiTides, i`m pretty happy with them myself
Here`s my list, built solely from the Battalion and with the Sorceress (except the Reaper):
Chiruh Ravensinger
LvL 2 Sorceress
Tome of Furion and Sacrifical Dagger
185pts
Chiruh`s Guard
12 Warriors
Shields and Full Command
99pts
Chiruh`s Death-Rain
16 Crossbowmen
160pts
The Blood Pirates
20 Corsairs
Full Command, Sea Serpent Standard
250pts
The Thorns
5 Cold One Knights
FC, Warbanner
200pts
Elfslayer
Reaper Crossbow
100pts
994pts, 57 guys and gals, and very cheap (250$, and that`s in Norway ).
I`m going to use this army tomorrow (without the Reaper but with an Assasin) against Lizardmen. There`s a possibility that there`s gonna be a Battle Report.
Cheers!

Nice . If you want feedback on the list there seem to be a lot of DE players posting over in the Army Lists section. And I'd love to see a battle report after your game!

Hehehe I was just gonna say...Dark Elves or High Elves! Both are extremely capable fighters, shooters, and magic users. Not to mention you can do a whole lot with each battalion! So far I've really enjoyed my Dark Elves and always have fun playing them.
