I just finished a commission for the Forgefather of the Salamanders. He's one of the more detailed special characters I've done, and it gives him quite a bit of character- even though Vulkan insists on wearing a helmet.

I've put up some more photos of Vulkan He'stan right here.

I like the paint job, but the model is such a ridiculous sculpt it makes me shiver. Oh well, a nice job as always odin and I'm glad to see you as well find the helmet confusing.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

The helmet is strange one any special character.

One odd thing about him is that because the helmet goes on as a separate piece, you could replace his head with any marine head quite easily. I'm not completely sure how it would look, but I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to try it.

Sweet! Nice directional lighting from the lava.
As far as the helmet goes, GW probably didn't wanna open up the Salamander skin color debate again, since any color you choose will be wrong to someone.

Playing Space Marine demo while GF was scrapbooking:
Me: I can turn it down, if the screams of dying orks are annoying you.
Her: That's ok, I love hearing the screams of dying orks.

My armies (W-D-L):
2,000 (about 1,200 painted and now I'm feeling the call of Russ) 3-4-3
2,000 (about 1,000 painted, WiP) 0-1

I doubt the choice to give him a helmet has anything to do with the 'skin colour debate' since the current codex refers to the jet-black skin. So they're not worried about making people cranky with that one.

I would think it's far more likely that they simply don't think every special character needs to be running around with his helmet off.

Characters should have multiple heads to pick from, including helmets. Im not against a helmet for a hero, but it should look better then a standard helmet.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.

Let's be fair- his helmet is far more ornate than most Mark VII helmets, and suitable to the character of the Salamanders.

It just doesn't look as characterful as a face would.

Fantastic Model!, i've got this model also, and started painting him up, its been a bit of a struggle.. as there is sooo much detail, i have to admit tho, i really aint a big fan of the model, might convert my own at some point!

You could simply convert this one- swap out the head for a helmetless one of you choosing and it is suddenly a very different looking mini.

great paint job, I don't like the model which is why I continue to use the Vulkan I made before GW put out the model rather than picking this one up. But yours does look amazing.

He'Stan isn't the master of the Salamanders chapter... Tu'shan is.

Yeah, I totally misquoted it. I hang my head in shame for that.

By the way, I don't remember every seeing rules for Tu'shan, but I do remember a description of him with an enormous and ancient salamander pelt and a big hammer. Is that all we know about him?

Tu'shan was given minor fluff way back in Codex: Armageddon but no rules IIRC. I think there was something about him doing some particularly heroic things during the Second War for Armageddon and being praised by Dante in fron of the Blood Angels; partly because of this he was one of the first Space Marine commanders to respond when the Third War broke out. Don't have my Codex: Armageddon with me so can't check.

Thanks. I remember reading that a while ago. In Codex Armageddon, it had a picture to go along with it (just one more bald space marine, though).

I was a little surprised to find him so reviled too. He's loaded with detail, but I count that as a good thing. Nice pics, by the way.
