I have collected Warhammer over about 6 years. I have built up 4 armies taking into consideration points and class types, making sure I had suitable fast attack, heavy support etc.

Then I realized I have never played a full game in my life and that I don't even like playing the tabletop game. This has always bugged me as I've thought of my hobby as pointless. Leading me to quit several times.

Yet I really enjoy modelling and painting, so I need a reason to keep collecting.

After playing Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning, I thought it would be a good idea to just create 'hero' characters. Basically the bad asses of the universe, completely overpowered for the game but they look kick ass.

So my first idea is to create The Angels of Death where all the great chapter masters have come together to form an elite killing squad. Also to order some awesome battlesuits from forgeworld and paint them up really well. Maybe a squad of just chaplans because I think they're awesome.

So yea I ask for ideas and also where to get parts? Over the years I have collected quite a lot of cool bits n pieces yet is there anywhere you can actually order just sections of a kit?

If I were to stop playing, I would still paint but would also only do special characters or single models. Perhaps get into doing dioramas or displays.

If you are going this route, I say just paint whatever you want in whatever colors you want.

Hoard O Bits on ebay has a HUGE selection of bits at insanely cheap prices, and if all else fails thewarstore usually has them, although certain pieces are way overpriced($13 for a multimelta which is retail for the metal model).

I am sort of like you. I started in the hobby because of the game and now I like the modeling aspect so much more.

My God, I am only 33 and I am starting to sound like a 60 year old with his model train set. Quick Martha, take me behind the shed and do what needs to be done. :BANG:

Hey, watch it there, sonnie!! Some of us old folks (I'm 51) would much rather play the game than putter around painting and modelling.

But ya know what, if that's what you enjoy, then enjoy it! Pre-tabletop gaming, I used to do WW2 modelling. I enjoyed it. Probably still would if I had time, but I've got hundreds of IG begging to be painted.............

i was alot like that. 40k games take so long that i rarely got in a full game and after the lgs closed it became even harder despite having a table i built at home.
in the end i decided to switch to a quicker game with more well defined and supported rules and that took over.
im still tempted by forgeworld goodies time to time but the price tag keeps me from committing. i lost interest in standard gw offerings since forgeworld dose it so much better.
as for your modeling project, there are several online parts stores but i think all are located in the usa or uk.

I collect and paint way more than I have ever (or probably ever will) played the game. I have also bought models purely just to put them together and paint them, often these have led on to me starting an army though!

There is nothing wrong with not liking the game itself, as many on here will agree Warhammer and 40K both have there faults, so maybe have a go with adapting a different rules set?

The way I see it is that everyone needs a hobby or a way of de-stressing. It doesn't have to make sense or appeal to others, it just needs to make you happy

I have only played ten proper games, normally because I'm pre-occupied with painting and collecting. But, if I completely give up on the gaming side of this hobby, Commisioning will probaly take over.

I've been collecting(that's what I'll call it) a Tau army for about four years now. I'm so off and on(more off than on) with my painting and modeling though, I have never got a full game in. With the amount of time you need to invest to get a full army, I think you would defintely have to enjoy the hobby side of it more than playing it.

in the end i decided to switch to a quicker game with more well defined and supported rules and that took over.

I am really curious, what game are you refering to?

While I do have 4 1000-2000 point armies lately I buy what I like the look of

i dont see a problem with collecting and painting. ive got a lot of unpainted stuff at the moment and i cant remember the last time i played a game of 40k. I also have a VC army which hasnt even played a game yet. I find that i dont have many people to play with nearby or the time. I do have the time to get out my painting stuff and do some quick painting when i have a spare hour.

Guilty as charged.

I have about 3000pts each of nids and marines in various stages. Plus some BFG (chaos, imperial, and marine fleets) and terrain. And I build other models as well (sci-fi and armor), and other minis. I've been collecting since 3rd addition came out.

Not only have I never played a game, I've never even taken them out of my display case, other than to show them kids. I rarely step into my FLGS, other than to buy a few things. I've always wanted to play a game, but RL always gets in the way, and then new rules come out oh yes, I buy a lot of the codexes, and the rules, and the magazine, as well - gotta have inspiration!

I also paint and very rarely (not at all in the past 2-3 years) play Warhammer. In my case I think it is because I do regularly paint (and play fairly often) historical minis (especially WWII) and I feel that every few months I need to paint something that is brightly coloured and so painting a few Empire figures helps with that.

My buddy collected for over 10 years before actually convincing me to get started collecting so we could play games. At first he never had friends capable of doing the modeling/painting other than myself and I didn't have the resources to buy expensive toy soldiers. He just kept accumulating and picking away at them (We'd sometimes use them for tabletop RPGs like Rifts).

Only problem is that once we started actually playing (yay for a career and disposable income...too bad you don't get it until you're damn near 30 >.< he's had to rip apart several squads in order to make them legal.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Yea I remember grinding away at my 20th Ork Choppa without much reason to do so. Yet if I don't make a model perfectly I'll always want to come back and finish it. 60+ models that I want to base, recoat, paint, highlight. Overwhelming enough to just give up. So after my 16 month break I think I'll start fresh.

I'm kinda like this. I don't dislike playing, but where I live the opportunity just doesn't come up much. If I ever get enough free time to finish my beastmen, I may try a few games though. It would be a good way to learn some non-standard Japanese!

I have collected about 2500 points of necrons, probably 1500 points of SM and Orks each, have the black reach starter set, have the core rulebook and a few codexes... and have never played a single game of 40k proper.

I've played a fair bit of Space hulk, though.

I am mostly collecting them just to build, paint, and display. I only really like getting stuff that I enjoyed in the Dawn of War games.

Since I moved back to Japan, I hardly ever play. Although I went undefeated last year at 2-0-0. lol. But I find that I am now more into the painting and modelling aspect than anything else. The rules very a la measurement are all totally fethed up into cms and what not. Magically 16 inches becomes like 13. Lame.

But painting and modelling is an internal exercise for me. The price of the GW narcotic is very expensive, so it actually works out cheaper to buy a unit of guys and model it into two or three characters than to buy the character blisters themselves. The real nad buster here is that I am unable to find Vallejo paint. Even telephoning the distributors on more than one occasion has turned up nothing, yet you see the pervs who paint the bikin clad anime girl models using it in almost ever issue of Hobby Japan. And yes, they are pervs. You have no idea.

I rarely ever play and have little interest in doing so, and I own 50% of one of the largest wargaming forums in the world

Still, if I did start to play more instead of painting/modeling, it would upset the perfect yin-yang harmony between yakface and myself.

I think I've played about 2 games in the last year. Maybe even just 1. For me it's all about building & painting & collecting a cool looking army even if no one ever gets to see it but me. I use the rules and codexes as a guide for what units to add to the army so that it's ready to go if i ever do want to play with it, but I really just don't have the time to play. I can't make it to any game stores to play during the week since I work and by the time I get home and eat something and walk the dog, I'd have about an hour before any place would close and no stores are nearby really. Saturdays are reserved for my GF. Sundays are the only day I really get to myself and those are usually spent on chores and stuff. If I had more time I might play more often, but I'm perfectly fine with just painting

I collect but dont play that often I dont know I just love painting and modelling... When I do play its fresh again I enjoy a game more when Im not constantly playing it...

Im getting more into my film viewing now and planning screenplays and scripts in my head.

Also action figure collecting has exploded again in my household with I and the missus both collecting.

@Legoburner - Thanks for the tip! The Yellow Submarine in Chiba has nothing in the way of Vallejo. Akihabara is part of the Perv axis of Tokyo, so I'm not too surprised.
