Just spotted this on the BBC website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/north_east/8533791.stm
I might have to get one next time i go visit my brother, if only to assuage the massive inferiority complex a certain Celtic nation seems to be clinging to.

Yet it always seems to be the Scots who bring up that reference
We seem to be more interested in digging up as much dirt as possible on our star players (thick gakkers to a man-jack they may be) so we'll have yet another flimsy excuse for being soundly beaten in the quarter-finals again.
And by 'We', i mean the Media...

Yeah, I really don't get this - why do Scots have such a problem with the English? We haven't done anything to them for years and years.
Well, apart from put their kids through school and subsidise their healthcare...

Acquiring American Citizenship
In 1985 Murdoch became a United States citizen to satisfy legislation that only United States citizens could own American television stations. This also resulted in Murdoch losing his Australian citizenship.[19][20]
Asked about the Australian federal election, 2007 at News Corporation's annual general meeting in New York on 19 October 2007, its chairman Rupert Murdoch said, "I am not commenting on anything to do with Australian politics. I'm sorry. I always get into trouble when I do that." Pressed as to whether he believed Prime Minister John Howard should be re-elected, he said: "I have nothing further to say. I'm sorry. Read our editorials in the papers. It'll be the journalists who decide that – the editors."[21]

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

But he's still an Aussie. Citizenship is irrelevant. You can take the man out of crazytown, but you can't take crazytown out of the man.

Oh, it doesn't cause offense. Not relevant.
We might not be offended, but there is an underlying hatred out there that needs challenging. The T-shirt is homourous, but the sentiment is more serious.
It is a known fact that many England anti-fans are out there. They even get interviewed by foreign press once in a while. They turn up at the England matches, regardless of who is playing to cheer on the other side.
Sure its only sport, sure its just a game. But does this happen anywhere else to anyone else?
I have some English friends north of the border, and one sister there too. We dont harass Scots down here, yet English in Scotland face a growing tide of racism.
Now admittedly this is only from a minority of Scots, but its in some ways 'acceptible'. I have read of calls to encourage voters to vote councillors at office on no other grounds than they are English, and its not challenged in any way. If someone was to say, vote to keep Blacks out of office it would be roundly stomped on.
Which is quite odd allowing for the fact that our PM is a Scot. Mark my words, I have nothing good to say about Gordon Brown, but being Scottish is not on the agenda at all.

Meh.
I'm English (very) and have lived in Glasgow for 14 years. Never had any hassle or anything but friendly banter. Having said that, I think it stems from the all-encompasssing "England" to mean the "UK"; certainly, that annoys the hell out of the wife (who is from these here parts). Obviously, there's the historical tension which tends to overlook the fact that it was a Scottish monastic dynasty from 1603-1688.
I've also noticed that Scots don't tend to rally round the national team (as they're a bit rubbish) - it's much more about your big local team; the national game/tartan army tends to be older and less local team orientated (that is a sweeping and city-centric generalisation I appreciate, but still).
Also, it's really funny because the England team are basically rubbish (well, on past performance, anyhoo).

As always another ridiculous blanket statement about the world cup. Find me a man over the age of 20 from England who thinks they will win the world cup, or who thinks 1966 has any significance at all. My grandad was a scot living in the boro with an english wife and even he didnt seem like us very much as he would occasionally make some ridiculous bigoted stereotype. And 1966 was only 45 years ago. They way you lot go on about us, you would think that Bannokburn was last fething week. Cant get over whats drummed into you as a boy it seems. How is it just 'banter' when a small boy was beaten for wearing an england shirt? When a disabled fella was kicked round a park in Glasgow for the same crime? The scots actively encourage the hatred and breed it into their kids with their mothers milk. If i made a shirt pointing out that Glasgow is the alcoholic obese illiterate chav capital of Europe, im sure our bitter and twisted whinging cousins wouldnt be happy about it. For myself, im tired of the racism. I have decided to meet them head on and i now dislike the Scots more than the French. I think i would even support another war. We would have the royal marines, the paras and 90% of the special forces, you guys have the royal highland dog walking regiment. I know who my moneys on. Please encourage all of your countrymen to vocally support the SNP as well, i really want shot of the fething lot of you.

I have a friend who is also very English, lives in Paisley and sees a lot of racism. He defuses it well though, the hateful looks starts when they hear the accent, but stops when they ask him what he is doing here and he replies " its my home, I like it here." To give the neds come credit, call yourself a local and they normally accept you as a local, so long as you stick to the right area. You dont go into the wrong pub and expect to walk out again.

We also basically have a team that has several world-class players in it. Terry, Cole, Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney would pretty much walk into any club team in the world.
We also topped our qualifying group, scoring 34 goals in 10 games, which is more than Spain, Germany, Italy and France. It's also 1 more than Brazil scored in 18 games, and 11 more than Argentina.
England are in form, have good players and a good manager - it's not unreasonable to assume we can do well this summer.

As you might expect, i agree with Orlanth. I think the issue goes way beyond this. Thor, my phone is Irish. I was born and raised in Middlesbrough. Automatically Appended Next Post: By well mate i presume you mean 'semi finals at the absolute best' right? England have about as much chance of winning the cup as i have of getting a nosh off the Pope! Not that it matters either way, i have never really understood the pointless nationalism that you get at sporting events. I care little if they win or lose to be quite frank, and why random man in the pub thinks that 11 blokes he has never met winning a game of footy gives him the right to brag to a foreigner is utterly beyond me. Same goes for the olympic 'the most drugs means the most wins' games or any other ultimately pointless sporting event. They just seem to promote idiocy it seems to me.. Or am i just a miserable fether? :-)
