So, I've been thinking about this alot lately,
When marneus calgar is removed as a casualty, has he just died, or has he simply been incapacitated.
It's not important, but with such a history, he's never gonna die in a measily 5k point game, is he?

They count as being wounded with no ability to fight back....so not dead, just incapacitated.
unless the kroot win in CC. they eat the dead. so after kroot beat him in the assault you can never play that model again!!

Depends on how he dies. I don't think he's going to be simply incapacitated if a Titan steps on him or something

I'd say its up to you mate. For my plastic models (mainly the smurfs) I used to model an injury when they were taken out (less time these days sadly so less time to keep up), one huy got hit with a sniper shot so I gave him a metal plate over one side of his helmet, an assault squad got killed by 'stealers so I made them look like they'd been cut up a bit. But for unique characters I'd say its just Incapacitated, can't see GW wantng to kill off Abaddon cause some kid thought he could take a nid army by himself

Colonel Straken had an Ork Stompa Titan step on him. He survived to make the Orks regret that decision.

I think the assumption when Marines get wounded in game is that they're unable to fight for whatever reason. Since you'll regularly see 50 marines get slaughtered and all. I figure marines would have a policy to withdraw if they're not at peak, so as to not be a burden on there squad mates, not to risk loosing there precious gene-seed and to make sure there war gear doesn't get destroyed. This would go doubly for characters.
Of course, that's assuming they're not in a last, desperate stand or something.

The rulebook itself states that just because something is a casualty in-game doesn't mean they're dead, they're just out of action for at the duration of a game. So knocked out, trapped under a collapsed wall, dead, the unit scattered, etc.

Bear in mind that the game you're playing doesn't necessarily represent the entirety of the battle being fought. 40K games are intended to represent a 'snapshot' of the larger battle. Sort of like a movie focussing on just one part of the action, where the particularly exciting stuff is happening.
There was actually a nice explanation of that back when Epic 40000 was released. While the game covered huge, sweeping battles with entire companies of troops, tanks and titans, it had little micro-battles that occurred when two opposing detachments (fighting groups of up to half a dozen or so units) got within a certain distance of each other. These little micro-battles were essentially the equivalent of a 40K game happening in (even more) miniature...

When your Calgar dies, you may never use him again because he was unique and now he's dead. Sorry.
